Hi all,
I'm an early career OT (nearly a year in) with a long history prior working in community health (psychosocial space). Post graduating, I worked in an NDIS psychosocial role - I enjoyed the therapeutic work, but not the work conditions. I've since shifted into a community public health role which I've been in for a few months; which for various reasons seems to largely be home mods, very basic AT & a LOT of admin. I'm pretty bored, despite it being a new role - the conditions are really great, my team is great, and my managers are great (but they are not OTs).
I don't feel that I'm really learning - and I'm plotting my next move. I liked mental health, and I'm potentially considering going back into this area; because of my previous work history, it is likely that I'd be able to quite easily find work. I like the idea of this bc I have more responsibility quicker, it's clinically challenging & I'm both personally and professionally interested in mental health / more creative interventions to support ppl. If I want to eventually work for myself, I'd also like to become mental health endorsed & just jumping into this now would quicken this process. On the flip side, I've not yet worked in a hospital, and my experience in physical health is limited to my current role where I'd say my clinical learning is pretty narrow. I don't know what I don't know, and there may be something in there that I love.
I'm wondering a couple of things - first, whether I ought to stay in this role for a longer period of time (6 months? 12 months?) for job hopping reasons? And second, rather than moving back into a psychosocial role, whether it would be more prudent at this stage to get some acute, hospital experience?
