HC: Alastor’s relationship/contract with Rosie
More of a Rosie HC but stick with me…Rosie is, to me, at least partially based on Barbra Streisand as Dolly in Hello Dolly! (See episode title where Rosie is introduced, “Hello Rosie”). Dolly is a strong-willed widowed matchmaker, whereas Rosie is a deal-maker.
Rosie feels totally Gilded Age coded. But it’s interesting that she doesn’t fulfill her end of the bargain with Alastor-he complains that he is far too weak for his liking.
Alastor is powerful, but far from the most powerful sinner in Hell, despite Rosie’s promises. Still, Alastor is driven by an innate ego and a desire to be the best, which I think is why Rosie sent him away in the first place. He got too big for his britches and probably tried something that failed spectacularly. Or maybe he tested the limits of her power. Tried too hard to get out of his chains and broke something in Rosie. Perhaps that’s why she sends him to hotel; Rosie views it as a simple job that doesn’t require him to be powerful enough that it would mess with her position. She doesn’t fix his staff after his battle with Adam because she herself is afraid of him.
I think Alastor, being Rosie’s pet, learns to move in her Gilded Age world. Surviving in this world carefully depends on words and looks and alliances. To me, New Orleans human Alastor always seems so brash, so sure of his own position, and Rosie teaches him to learn and observe her (and by extension, his) opponents.
What we see in S2 is a lot of careful and plotted “wound licking” from Alastor. He comments in the Finale that “altruistic Alastor died for his friends”. He’s much more political in his manoeuvres and pits people against each other with a better success rate, something he picked up from Rosie, perhaps.
He’s also careful with his wordplay-he gets out of his capture by Vox based on a technicality, and similarly with Rosie through his deal with Charlie. See also: “quid pro quo, it’s only fair”. He’s an Overlord but he’s watched how the other overlords work. I think Alastor is a powerful observer and by the end of S2 bided his time enough to learn how to break out his deals.
An Alastor-themed poem
Since I can’t draw I thought I’d write about Alastor instead. Perspective is if the narrator of the poem meets him sometime in the woods somewhere (and maybe they’ve met Alastor before?).
Alastor/Rosie musings.
She makes him do his little dance every time he steps out of line, which is why it is so well-rehearsed. “You know the lines!”
I think the deer thing isn’t a coincidence. My bet is Rosie set the whole thing up. Deer are docile at times, but still very wild (obviously) which makes Alastor’s embodiment as that animal interesting from a “control” perspective.
There are some urban legends surrounding different blues artists in the 1930s selling their soul to the Devil at the crossroads to play better guitar. So I also feel since Alastor is quite musically inclined this isn’t the first time he tried to summon Rosie or another demon to make a deal.
Alastor was the gateway drug
New to Hazbin (just through season one), knew about Alastor before and watched a couple of Hazbin complaining/criticism (?) videos before I started the show.
The show is very entertaining and the characters are all great. But heck is it fun to fangirl over a dapper animated weirdo again after I don’t know how many years (I’m mid-30s and I don’t think I’ve fangirled hard since I was teen). Fun to be here and see all the fun fanart especially! :)
