Bike Fits for casual/occasional commute riders

Heya,

I would like to do a bike fit so I can get an understanding of what the correct geometry is for my anatomy so that I don't hurt myself on longer rides. I am short at 157cm, but I have come to realise that I have a shorter torso and longer legs which makes the proportions hard to fit, and I'm trying to figure out what is right for me and riding my XS bike and I think I have reached the limitations of what I can DIY. I have noticed some knee soreness on rides over 20km, and I've bought a couple of different seats second hand to try out that I can swap in.

The issue here is that I own a hybrid and don't wish to upgrade or change to a dropbar or do anything competitive, I'm just a regular flat bar hybrid rider. Most of the bike fitters that people recommend just from their general vibe (the site or instagram) seem like they are geared towards people who are drop bar owners and/or intending to race for speed/competitiveness etc. Is there anyone that you guys might be able to recommend that is good for someone like me? I am inner north Melb but happy to travel (as long as you can get there by train +- bike lol). Thanks!

What bikes do thieves tend to target these days?

Just curious. Going by the absolute explosion in reports I wonder if there's more of an effort towards targeting e-bikes these days due to their higher resale value. (Yes, I'm sure in an opportunistic situation a thief would make off with anything not properly secured, but I also wonder about what else I can do to make my bike less attractive to thieves. I do have a kryptonite D-Lock but I know that if someone REALLY wants to nick a bike they can.)

FWIW I have a women's hybrid that I love that is extremely basic looking, and I've plastered it in lots of girly stuff and dumb stickers. I like to pretend that a thief wouldn't want to be seen pushing around an XS bike with stickers that say shit like "move, I'm gay".

De-influence me - new gravel bike vs speccing up existing hybrid

Hi there!

I have just returned to bike riding at 40 and have been really enjoying gaining confidence and fitness by being on a bike again. It’s made me really happy and only wish I’d started sooner. I have a hybrid commuter, the Merida Crossways L20 (ladies geometry version of the 20) in an XS.

https://99bikes.com.au/products/merida-crossway-l-20-silk-dove-blueblue (for the specs)

I had initially gotten a bike with the intent to commute but the truth is parts of the commute into the city still aren’t super safe for bike riders and I’m not really ready to have to deal with the end of trip hassle yet. What I HAVE been enjoying instead is the many protected bike paths in my area that are away from roads, some of which have a few gravel and dirt parts. I think I really want to just have fun on my bike for now rather than use it for active transport to-from work every day.

This is all a long lead up to say: I’ve been looking at gravel bikes with the intent to go bush a bit more but I don’t like drop bars. I’ve seen multiple posts saying that flat bar gravel bikes are essentially just hybrids with gravel tyres or 90s MTBs with gravel tyres, assertions that I have no hope of validating. Anyway, looking at the specs for my Merida, could I conceivably whack a pair of Panaracers on them and use it as a gravel esque bike just for a little fun, or does it need extra suspension measures that might make it unsuitable or not worth small upgrades? I’d love to avoid falling into the MUST HAVE NEW BIKE ASAP trap.

Thanks for your advice!!!

Part time RNs - grad offers?

Seeking some discussion here from recent graduates (ideally last three years at least as the landscape has changed quite a bit) who were also studying their RNs part time:

With the cost of living crisis getting worse and my stress levels at an all time high I dropped down to part time study and full time work for my final year of study (I still need to pay the mortgage after all) and am now due to graduate end of 2027. I’m getting scared by last years grad intake issues and the general sense of dread that’s overtaken all grad year conversations for 2026.

I want to know, has anyone here dropped down to part time and was able to secure a grad year? Should I quit my higher paying non healthcare job next year and find something health related to make myself look more grad ready? I wasn’t going to initially because it’s no guarantee of securing a grad role but now I’m worried.
