Drama 1 - Thinking of Her
FL: Cao Sai Ya
ML: Li Zhuo Yang
Release date: 23 May 2026

Drama 2 - He Misses Her
FL: Ma Le Jie
ML: Cheng Yu Feng
Release date: 24 May 2026

Similarities:

  • FL was previously engaged to a relative of ML.
  • ML proposed to FL a contract marriage.
  • There were people trying to smear FL’s reputation at her workplace.

Comparison:

  • Romance: While ML aggressively pursued FL in both adaptations, the romance in Version 2 felt notably one-sided. The FL showed little interest in building either a romantic connection or a strategic alliance. In contrast, Version 1’s FL and ML had a far more dynamic relationship. A standout moment occured when she catched both ML and myself off guard by accepting his marriage proposal. I loved the scene where she sat on his lap and embraced him while he was in total disbelief.
  • Acting: I have always believed that on-screen chemistry is a byproduct of great acting, and the chemistry between Cao Sai Ya and Li Zhuo Yang in Version 1 was palpable. Every interaction radiated warmth, even during simple conversations, thanks to their easy camaraderie and intense eye contact. Unfortunately, Ma Le Jie and Cheng Yu Feng in Version 2 lacked a connection. Their scenes felt flat and uninspired, more like them simply reciting lines.
  • Storytelling: I appreciated how Version 1 balanced professional life and romance. FL was far from a doormat, standing her ground against abusive patients, while ML was ruthless toward anyone who crossed him. Conversely, Version 2 dedicated significantly more screen time to the FL’s career, offering a deeper look at her vulnerability when dealing with a challenging case. While I valued this extra layer of character development, that workplace conflict was left unresolved and I was disappointed with the abrupt ending.

My final thoughts:

  • Both dramas are good one-time watches and out of the two, Thinking of Her wins hands down. The chemistry between the leads is noticeably stronger, and it strikes a much better balance between their careers and romance.
  • I really love Cheng Yu Feng’s visuals in modern romance short dramas, but I have yet to see him paired with a strong female co-star. If you have any recommendations where his co-star matches his presence, please share in the comments below.

The Bathtub Chronicles: Connected at Heart

I started a list of Male Leads (MLs) in bathtubs on mydramalist after being captivated by Ren Jia Lun's bathtub scene in Forever and Ever.

It's been awhile since I last shared my collection in this sub. I am inspired to share today because it's Li Zhuo Yang's birthday. This is my favourite Li Zhuo Yang's bathtub scene.

Today’s entry: Connected at Heart

FL: He Tian Tian

ML: Li Zhuo Yang

My thoughts:
I used to be neutral on He Tian Tian, but this drama completely won me over. >!Her comedic performance is great, and her chemistry with Li Zhuo Yang is electric. To me, he seemed like he was trying not to break character and laugh in half their scenes. Without spoiling anything, that bathtub scene transitions seamlessly from laugh-out-loud funny to genuinely steamy.!<

Do I want to rewatch this scene? ✅

Happy 28th Birthday to Li Zhuo Yang! 🎉

Today, 15 August 2026, marks Li Zhuo Yang’s birthday! Happy birthday to one of the most striking visuals in the Chinese short drama world.

I am always absolutely mesmerised by his abundant beauty marks as they add so much unique charm to his face. Someone on Discord says that he reminds them of the American actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but to me, Li Zhuo Yang's visuals strongly resemble the Korean idol Baekho. Who do you guys see?

The first drama of his that I watched was All of Her, a mini drama. I was absolutely delighted when he crossed over to vertical dramas from mini dramas because I think he will definitely get more recognition and fans this way.

I have only watched a handful of his verticals so far, but I noticed an amusing pattern: he has appeared in bathtubs in at least 3 vertical dramas! I should honestly feature him in "The Bathtub Chronicles" column.

My absolute favourite drama of his is Perfectly Matched co-starring He Tian Tian. Great chemistry and he looked like he was trying his best not to laugh (He Tian Tian was wonderfully hilarious in this drama)!

To celebrate his birthday, I am planning to watch My Blind Date Is a Belated Romance today. Let me know your recommendations or drop your favourite Li Zhuo Yang dramas below to celebrate!

Happy 23rd Birthday to Jia Yi Xuan aka Jadie Jia! What's your favourite drama of hers? 🎂

I just found out today is Jia Yi Xuan's (Jadie Jia / 贾翼瑄) birthday! Shoutout to u/Yoori_Lee for giving me the heads up!

She turns 23 today! Happy Birthday to one of the most adorably petite vertical drama actresses!

The last drama of hers I finished watching was A Kiss to the Winged Bone alongside Lan Bo. She played a serious character, which is fresh of breathe air.

To celebrate today, I’m planning a mini-marathon tonight, but I can't decide which one to start first:

  1. Fatal Attraction (with Zhen Zi Qi)
  2. Pure White as Snow on the Mountain (with Wang Chen Peng)

Have you guys watched either of these? Which one should I dive into first?

Let me know your recommendations or drop your favorite Jadie Jia dramas below to celebrate!

Drama Duo: The Steamy, Secret-Crush Romance of A Confident Heiress and A "Bankrupt" Playboy

Quick note: When I discovered there were two versions of “Wild enough to make him lose” control 够野,诱他失控 story, I was thrilled. I watched the first version early last year, so I went ahead, watched Version 2 last Friday, and drafted this review. Then on Sunday, a MyDramaList user mentioned yet another version exists! I briefly hesitated to post this, but ultimately, good stories deserve all the love they can get. So, here we go…

Synopsis:
Jiang Wan Ning had a one-night stand with the bankrupt Chu Jun because of drunkenness, and was forced to marry by her grandmother. After marriage, the two gradually got closer in the entanglement of family, career and emotion. The two tested each other and bickered, but protected each other in the crisis.

Drama 1 - Love Quietly Arrives
FL: Ma Qian Qian
ML: Sun Yue
Release date: 8 October 2024

Drama 2 - Read between the Breaths
FL: Shi Tong
ML: Zhong Zheng
Release date: 16 May 2025

Similarities:

  • The morning after, FL's grandmother catches the main couple in a compromising position and immediately suggests marriage—a proposal the ML jumps at without hesitation.
  • He effectively becomes her "kept man," with the Female Lead providing his daily allowance and even securing him a job.
  • Unbeknownst to her, his compliance isn't just about convenience. He has actually harboured a secret, long-standing crush on her all along.

Comparison:

  • Characterisation: Overall, Version 1 outshines Version 2 across both lead roles. Ma Qian Qian was magnetic as the FL in Version 1, perfectly capturing a confident businesswoman with a killer sense of style. While Shi Tong’s performance in Version 2 was fine, her character was unfortunately let down by poor wardrobe and makeup choices. As for the ML, I vastly preferred Sun Yue’s surprisingly coquettish interpretation in Version 1 over Zhong Zheng’s cool, aloof portrayal in Version 2
  • Acting: While I enjoyed the pairing of Shi Tong and Zhong Zheng in Version 2, Ma Qian Qian and Sun Yue delivered truly stellar performances, both individually and as a dynamic rich couple in Version 1. Their chemistry was palpable in every scene, whether they were showing off their fantastic comedic timing during playful bickering or sharing high-intensity romantic moments. Ma Qian Qian brought an irresistible "Queen Bee" energy to her role, channeling a chic, confident vibe reminiscent of Cher from Clueless. Meanwhile, Sun Yue was completely magnetic as a recently "bankrupt" playboy, bringing far more depth, charm, and personality to his character.
  • Romance: Both versions are impressively steamy, as both couples clearly express their love through physical touch with an abundance of kissing, hugging, and hand-holding. However, their dynamics differ noticeably in how that affection plays out. The couple in Version 1 shares a fun, lively bickering dynamic that gives their physical intimacy a playful edge. In contrast, the romance in Version 2 feels a bit more one-sided, with ML frequently constantly initiating intimacy and ambushing FL with sudden kisses.

My final thoughts:

  • While both adaptations are enjoyable, Love Quietly Arrives is my absolute favourite. I had Love Quietly Arrives on constant repeat back when it was available on YouTube, thanks to its exceptional character dynamics, stellar acting, and undeniably steamy romance.
  • Having watched a few of Ma Qian Qian’s dramas, this remains my favourite performance of hers. She completely stepped away from the typical mousy heroine archetype to deliver a refreshingly bold and confident portrayal, and I genuinely hope she takes on more roles like this in the future.

Drama Duo: She Thought It Was a Job, He Thought It Was True Love

Synopsis:

This drama tells the story of a contract marriage between Shi Qi and Lu Huai Nian. Shi Qi married Lu Huai Nian as a substitute. Two years later, she was ready to divorce, but found that Lu Huai Nian had fallen in love with her. The two experienced misunderstandings, twists and turns, and finally Lu Huai Nian chased Shi Qi back, and the two finally became a family.

Drama 1 - Love Is Only Real When It Ends

FL: Li Ruo Qi

ML: Fang Zheng Nan

Release date: 1 February 2025

Drama 2 - Persuading to Get Married

FL: Chen Ci

ML: Song Yu Bo

Release date: 4 February 2026

Similarities:

- She treats the contract marriage strictly as a job, viewing the ML as her boss rather than her husband.

- He misinterprets her professional courtesy as romantic devotion, blissfully convinced that she is head-over-heels in love with him.

- His pragmatic best friend serves as a constant reality check, stepping in to debunk the ML’s wild romantic misreadings.

Comparison:

- Acting: Version 1 boasts spectacular, nuanced, and mature performances by Li Ruo Qi, Fang Zheng Nan, and Da Yao. Li Ruo Qi displays an incredible expressive range and her portrayal of empathy in particular stood out to me. This was my first time watching Fang Zheng Nan, and he blew me away; his performance in one specific scene was so heartfelt it brought me to tears. Having seen Da Yao in secondary roles before, I can easily say this is his most outstanding work yet. On the other hand, Version 2 fell short emotionally. Chen Ci and Song Yu Bo lacked chemistry, leaving the dynamic between the main leads feeling distant and hard to connect with.

- The truth-reveal scene: ML refuses to believe FL doesn't reciprocate his feelings, prompting his best friend to invite her to a meal to uncover the truth. The two versions execute this reveal quite differently: in Version 1, the ML sits hidden at a nearby table, whereas in Version 2, the best friend simply calls the ML so he can eavesdrop remotely. Version 1 carries a far greater emotional punch—seeing the ML fight back tears as he realises she was merely doing her job without a trace of romantic intent is heartbreaking. This is the scene that made me cry. Having experienced Version 1, Version 2 felt like a letdown simply because the ML wasn't physically present to react in the moment.

- Characterisation: The characters in Version 1 feel like mature adults in their 30s, whereas the leads in Version 2 come across as twenty-somethings still trying to figure out their lives. This difference in maturity completely changes how each ML handles the impending divorce. In Version 1, the couple sits down for a proper, heart-to-heart conversation about their feelings and the split, with the ML thoughtfully giving the FL room to consider his romantic advances. Conversely, Version 2's couple never actually discusses their emotions, breeding misunderstandings that leave the ML's efforts feeling unappreciated by the FL. Ultimately, I disliked Version 2's FL. Her actions, particularly in that final scene with the doctor, felt distinctly childish. She comes across as the ultimate tai tai, living purely as a lady of leisure. In contrast, Version 1’s FL is sharp and capable. I was pleasantly surprised when she stepped up to help the ML solve a business crisis.

My final thoughts:

- Love Is Only Real When It Ends is undoubtedly the superior version. The cast delivers mature, highly nuanced performances, and that truth-reveal scene lands with a serious emotional punch. Plus, Fang Zheng Nan showing off his great abs was definitely a welcome bonus!

- In previous dramas I’ve watched starring Li Ruo Qi, she rarely seemed to click with her MLs. Ironically, this role is the exception, most likely because her character wasn't supposed to have any romantic feelings for him in the first place. Hands down, this is my favourite performance from her to date.

Drama Duo: A Chance at Love as the School Beauty Pursues the Hero Who Died Saving Her

Synopsis:
Lin Ran died in a car accident while trying to save his deskmate, the high school beauty. He is reborn back in his 18-year-old classroom, only to find that the school beauty has also been reborn. With teary eyes, she hugs him and is determined to make up for regrets and win him back. The aloof school beauty is now actively pursuing him, and everything becomes unexpected.

Drama 1 - I Died to Save the School Beauty, She Is Reborn and Chased Me
FL: Li Xin Yi
ML: Wei Jia Yu
Release date: 16 July 2025

Drama 2 - I Died to Save the School Beauty. After Her Rebirth, She Chased After Me
FL: Shangguan Mei Mei
ML: Chen Bai Qiao
Release date: 20 July 2025

Similarities:

  • FL was drawn to ML once she truly understood his character.
  • In both versions, ML’s best friend brought both sharp perception and comic relief to the story.
  • Having been taken advantage of by his crush in his past life, ML refused to do any more favours for her after being reborn

Comparisons:

  • FL characterisation: While both FLs were confident and self-assured, the FL in Version 1 was remarkably bold, assertive, and mature, which I absolutely loved! Her main focus was actively getting the ML to notice her. Meanwhile, the FL in Version 2 was driven more by the competition with her love rivals, and it was so much fun watching her stake her claim as his girlfriend.
  • Romance: The romantic dynamics between the two versions were noticeably different. Version 1 delivered a strong jiejie (older sister) / alpha-woman–beta-male energy driven by the FL’s assertiveness. That scene in the ML's room was packed with heat and humour. Her attraction to him was pure love and lust, not just gratitude. In contrast, Version 2 felt like a sweet first love, anchored by two shy characters.
  • Acting: Li Xin Yi perfectly channeled a smart CEO energy trapped in her reborn, younger self. Shangguan Mei Mei brought the ideal visuals for a classic school beauty. After seeing Chen Bai Qiao in so many cold CEO roles, it was refreshing to watch him play a low-profile student pursued by three girls. Wei Jia Yu was as endearing and kind as ever, though he is starting to feel a bit typecast in these roles. Above all, the chemistry between Li Xin Yi and Wei Jia Yu in Version 1 was palpable. Chen Bai Qiao and Shangguan Mei Mei in Version 2 had decent chemistry, though I wished the director had pushed them harder to capture that naive first-love spark.

My final thoughts:

  • I enjoyed both versions for completely different reasons. It was a joy to watch Chen Bai Qiao portray an earnest boy oblivious to the FL’s crush in I Died to Save the School Flower, After Her Rebirth, She Chased after Me. On the other hand, I Died to Save the School Beauty, She Is Reborn and Chased Me offered a stronger romance arc, elevated by ML’s gradual reciprocation and the sizzling, palpable chemistry between Li Xin Yi and Wei Jia Yu.
  • Both adaptations ground themselves in strong themes of family, and the heartwarming interactions between ML and his parents were a real highlight.
  • My only real critique is that I Died to Save the School Flower. After Her Rebirth, She Chased after Me introduced an intriguing minor mystery arc that was never fully resolved. I really wish they had wrapped it up neatly. I'm still dying to know who actually wanted to kill the female lead, and why!

From Short-Form to Mainstream: Familiar Faces in Key to the Phoenix Heart

I got home from a business trip last week and found my mum watching Key to the Phoenix Heart. I'd already noticed that this currently airing drama had been generating quite a bit of buzz on social media, but what really caught my attention was when a friend mentioned that short drama actress Ma Qiu Yuan had a role in it.

That immediately piqued my curiosity.

I looked up the cast list and was pleasantly surprised to discover quite a few familiar faces from the short-form drama world—both mini dramas and vertical dramas—appearing in this production.

I haven't watched Key to the Phoenix Heart yet, but here are some of the actors and actresses I recognised from the short-form drama scene.

Ma Qiu Yuan (photos 1, 2, 12 & 13)

Role: Li Le Jun

Notable works in short-form dramas:

My thoughts:
I was delighted to see Ma Qiu Yuan billed fourth in the cast list. She is a consistently strong actress, and I am always happy to see her land roles in long-form productions.

Her performance in Trapped in a Deadly Love completely won me over. She conveyed her character's frustration, despair and emotional vulnerability so convincingly that I genuinely felt every setback alongside her. Given the right script, I have no doubt that she can deliver an outstanding performance.

Merxat Yalkun (photos 3, 4, 12 & 14)

Role: Mu Lian Yu / Prince Ying

Notable works in short-form dramas:

My thoughts:
It's wonderful to see Merxat Yalkun in long-form productions again. Although I haven't watched his performances in long-form dramas such as Falling into Your Smile  and The Moon Brightens for You, I really enjoyed him in the short-form dramas Dear Beloved and Rent a Boyfriend for the New Year. He has a natural on-screen charisma that makes him easy to watch, and I would love to see him take on more leading roles in the future.

Su Jun He (photos 5, 6, 13 & 14)

Role: Xiao Yao

Notable works in short-form dramas:

My thoughts:
When it comes to male leads, I am usually drawn to actors with a more rugged, masculine look, and Su Jun He definitely fits the bill. I recently watched Entering the Screen as a Slave, where he was incredibly magnetic as the morally grey crown prince. If he brings that same intensity to Xiao Yao, I am looking forward to seeing his performance.

Jin Chao (photos 7 & 8)

Role: Hong Qi

Notable works in short-form dramas:

My thoughts:
I am a huge fan of Dong Lan Xue. The chemistry between Jin Chao and Qi Xia Xia was fantastic, and the storytelling was among the best I hae seen in a short-form drama. Seeing him land roles in long-form productions is great to see, and I hope it leads to even bigger opportunities.

Cheng Yu Feng (photos 9 & 10)

Role: Cui Shao An

Notable works in short-form dramas:

My thoughts:
Out of everyone on this list, Cheng Yu Feng is the actor whose work I've watched the most. He immediately commanded my attention in A Lucid Dream with his incredible screen presence.

My favourite performance of his is undoubtedly Enslaved by Love, where he played the deeply unhinged and toxic Yin Ji. What impressed me most was the range he brought to the role—from the almost caveman-like Yin Ji at the beginning, to the younger and more innocent version of the character, and finally the determined "I'm going to reclaim my City Lordship" Yin Ji. It was a surprisingly layered performance.

Akezhuli Zhuguli (photo 11)

Role: A Sun

Notable works in short-form dramas:

My thoughts:
I'll admit his name was what first caught my attention! Looking through his filmography, I realised he has actually appeared in quite a few short-form dramas. I haven't watched any of them yet, but The Everlasting Love looks like a good place to start.

These are the short-form drama actors and actresses I recognised in Key to the Phoenix Heart, although I may have missed a few especially among the supporting cast and guest appearances.

Have you watched Key to the Phoenix Heart? What did you think of their performances? And did you spot any other mini or vertical drama actors or actresses that I missed?

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Drama 1 - He Came from the Other Side
FL: Shi Tong
ML: Huang Hao Wen
Release date: 24 January 2025

Drama 2 - Secret Love Turns into Marriage, Only You Can Cure It
FL: Lou Xin Yue
ML: Xu Jiang Shuai
Release date: 23 July 2025

Similarities:

  • FL was a practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician.
  • ML’s mother strategically planned her first interaction with FL.
  • Both FL and ML went on an expedition to search for a rare medicinal herb to cure a critical illness.

Comparison:

  • Romance: Both versions lean into a sweet, low-spice romance, but Version 2 executes it far better. The dynamic is delightfully engaging, filled with playful teasing from the ML, intense eye contact, intimate hand-holding, and a satisfying number of kiss scenes that made me giddy. In contrast, Version 1 relied on a few chaste kisses and felt emotionally distant, lacking any real warmth between the leads.
  • Acting: Lou Xin Yue and Xu Jiang Shuai outshine Shi Tong and Huang Hao Wen both individually and as a pair. It was a treat to see Xu Jiang Shuai step away from his usual uptight, intense roles to play a fun, loving male lead. Together with Lou Xin Yue, their natural chemistry in Version 2 brings every romantic moment to life effortlessly.. On the other hand, Huang Hao Wen’s performance feels stiff, creating an undeniable barrier between him and Shi Tong that leaves their onscreen relationship completely devoid of chemistry. Zhang Yu Lin’s portrayal of Bo Yan in Version 2 was another highlight for me. Instead of turning the jealous, possessive ex into a cliché caricature, his understated expressions and handsome visuals gave the character surprising depth and made him genuinely sympathetic.
  • Theme: Family is the core theme of both drama versions, and I thoroughly enjoyed the warmth and uplifting dynamics between the FL and her adopted family, as well as her endearing bond with the ML’s parents and grandfather. In stark contrast, we also get a glimpse of toxicity through the FL’s ex and his mother, who heartlessly exploited her kindness while she was dating her son.

My final thoughts:

  • Secret Love Turns into Marriage, Only You Can Cure It is far superior to He Came from the Other Side. Thanks to the stellar performances, electric lead chemistry, and captivating romantic scenes, it kept me completely hooked, whereas He Came from the Other Side bored me to tears.
  • Zhang Yu Lin’s standout performance in Secret Love Turns into Marriage, Only You Can Cure It definitely put him on my radar. I am looking forward to diving into more of his vertical dramas where he plays the ML.

Happy 35th Birthday to Merxat Yalkun (Mi Re)!

While researching for some upcoming content, I noticed that today (20 July) is Merxat Yalkun's 35th birthday! 🥳

Whether you know him as Mi Re from mainstream CDramas like Legend of Yun Xi, Falling Into Your Smile, or My Sassy Princess or have caught him exploring vertical dramas like Dear Beloved or Rent a Boyfriend for the New Year, there’s no denying his striking visuals and strong screen presence.

It's always cool seeing established television actors bring their talent into the short drama space!

Release date: 30 October 2024

Drama 2 - Mr. Huo, He's Begging for A Title Everyday
FL: Zhu Xiao Xue
ML: Shao Wei
Release date: 17 November 2025

Similarities:

  • FL is an aspiring writer who was cheated on by her boyfriend of many years.
  • FL mistook her cheating boyfriend for her saviour.
  • ML is a nice guy who truly wants FL to be happy in her life.

Comparison:

  • Romance: I absolutely loved the romance arc - it was mature and deeply compassionate. Even though their marriage didn’t start as a love match, they had each other’s backs from day one. Although ML had harbored a crush on her since their school days, I appreciated that FL fully embraced her role as his wife without playing hard-to-get or acting like a cliché, overly shy bride. I also liked that their relationship wasn’t entirely smooth sailing. The story introduced realistic conflict alongside genuine efforts to resolve it.
  • Acting: Deng Ling Shu and Xiao Wen Yu definitely gave stronger performances than Zhu Xiao Xue and Shao Wei, both on their own and as a couple. Their acting was so nuanced, making their characters feel mature beyond their years—you could really see the growth from high school to ten years later. However, I’ve got to give credit to Shao Wei for those kissing scenes. Those moments were incredibly passionate and full of heat.
  • Supporting characters: Both versions share the exact same supporting cast—the cheating ex Huo Ming Xi, the parents, the ML’s assistant/college friend, the FL's bestie, and the ML's female college friend—but they are definitely better written in Moonlight Remains Gentle. I especially loved the scenes where the ML's family makes amends, and that great moment where the FL talks to his assistant/college friend to really get to know the ML better.

My final thoughts:

  • While I enjoyed both adaptations equally, Moonlight Remains Gentle earns an extra point thanks to the compelling performances of Deng Ling Shu and Xiao Wen Yu alongside its far better-written supporting characters.
  • At 3 hours 7 minutes, Mr. Huo, He's Begging for A Title Everyday runs 28 minutes longer than Moonlight Remains Gentle. I usually struggle to stay engaged with dramas that exceed 2.5 hours, but both of these were incredibly easy to watch.

Mid-Year Report: 2026's Best Stories with Multiple Adaptations So Far

One trend that continues to fascinate me is how often the same web novel or IP gets adapted multiple times.

Sometimes we get both a long-form drama and a vertical drama based on the same source material (such as Prisoner of Beauty and Yield to You). Other times, we end up with multiple vertical adaptations of exactly the same story, each with its own cast, style and interpretation.

As viewers, this gives us a unique opportunity to compare:

* Different casts and on-screen chemistry
* Different interpretations of the story
* Different characterisations
* Which adaptation best captures the spirit of the original

I first discovered this phenomenon when I started watching vertical dramas in late 2024.

One of the earliest stories I came across was the "poor girl selling eggs meets wealthy doctor" romance, A Night Deeply Drunk on the Spring Breeze, starring Yang Shu Yu and Du Ya Fei. I was completely taken aback by just how steamy it was. The male lead was an incredibly flirtatious doctor, and Yang Shu Yu and Du Ya Fei had explosive chemistry.

That led me down the rabbit hole.

I soon found several other adaptations of the same story, including Blazing Night starring Fan Di Yu and Huang Bo, where the leads had a much more dominant-submissive dynamic, and Addicted Only to You starring Li Ke Yi and Xie Yu Wang, whose kinder male lead made the relationship feel more balanced than in the other versions.

I couldn't make it past the opening minutes of Seductive Love because the female lead—who was supposed to be struggling financially—had immaculate salon-perfect nails that completely broke my immersion.

Earlier this year, yet another adaptation arrived: Midnight Temptation starring Yu Yi Lei and Cheng Yu Feng. Out of every version I've watched, Cheng Yu Feng was effortlessly stylish and, in my opinion, the most handsome doctor of all the versions.

What I find particularly interesting is how much these repeat adaptations have improved. Compared with earlier productions, many of the 2026 versions feature noticeably stronger storytelling, better production values and more polished performances.

Here are some remarkable stories that received multiple vertical drama adaptations between January and June 2026.

Mid-Year Report: 2026's Best Short Drama Actors and Actresses So Far

Six months have already flown by, which means we have reached the halfway point of 2026. To celebrate, the CShortHaven mod team has decided to look back at dramas released between January and June 2026 and pick our favourites across a variety of categories.

First up: Best Actors & Actresses (January–June 2026).

There are simply too many performers who impressed me this year with their emotional range, comedic timing, screen presence, and chemistry with their co-stars. They had that rare quality where every scene became more compelling the moment they appeared on screen.

These are my standouts from the first half of 2026.

Hei Ze (photos 1 & 2)

Notable works

Why did I pick him?
Hei Ze only has five vertical dramas to his name, but what an impression he made. While Follow My Dear General and More than a Childhood Friend were enjoyable, both were primarily centred on the female lead. When Fish Swim to Land, however, gave him the opportunity to truly shine.

He played a pet shop owner weighed down by emotional baggage, gradually confronting his past with the FL acting as the catalyst for his healing. It was a nuanced and heartfelt performance.

I'll also admit something a little less objective: Hei Ze sporting a mullet, a tan, tank tops, and occasionally no shirt at all, certainly did not hurt. 😍

He's also branching out into long-form dramas. I'm only around Episode 35 of The First Jasmine, but despite having a relatively small role, he has already made a strong impression.

Chen Fang Tong (photos 3 & 4)

Notable works

Why did I pick her?
Although Maid's Revenge was not one of my personal favourites, I thought Chen Fang Tong was absolutely outstanding in Decreed by Fate.

She's one of the few actresses who has transitioned seamlessly into vertical dramas. In an industry that often favours actresses in their early 20s, Chen Fang Tong continues to prove that talent matters more than age. Now in her early 30s, she remains one of the strongest performers in the short drama genre.

She has been incredibly prolific as well, with 10 vertical dramas released in just the first half of 2026. I am especially looking forward to her two upcoming collaborations with Gan Wang Xing: A Moment's Late Marriage and My Heartbeat Colorist and a collaboration with Wang Chen Peng titled Please Get Married Here.

Li Zhuo Yang (photos 5 & 6)

Notable works:

Why did I pick him?
I first discovered Li Zhuo Yang through his horizontal mini and micro dramas, where his gentle expressions and distinctive beauty marks immediately caught my attention.

He never quite reached the same level of popularity as actors like Dai Gao Zheng or Yan Zi Xian, so his earlier body of work wasn't as extensive. Moving into vertical dramas has turned out to be a smart career decision.

In 2026 alone, he has close to 20 vertical drama credits, including three yet to be released:

I'm excited to see where his career goes from here.

Deng Kai (photos 7 & 8)

Notable works:

Why did I pick him?
I'm generally not a fan of red-flag male leads, but there's no denying that Deng Kai excels at portraying morally complex characters.

His popularity skyrocketed thanks to his unforgettable performance as the tragic villain Qi Min in Pursuit of Jade. That silver wig really did something to all of us. Reddit and Weibo were full of viewers who somehow found themselves rooting for—or at least hopelessly attracted to—an unhinged, power-hungry, possessive character.

I was secretly hoping he would start taking on more vertical dramas because I would love to see him in modern settings, but that doesn't seem to be happening for now.

Thankfully, he has several exciting long-form projects coming up this year, including Tales of the Floating World alongside Wang Chu Ran and Chen Zhe Yuan. I would not be surprised if he follows a career path similar to Cheng Lei, successfully crossing over into mainstream Chinese dramas while continuing to build a loyal fanbase.

This post is not necessarily a list of the biggest stars or the most popular performers. It is simply a list of the actors and actresses whose performances left the strongest impression on me during the first six months of 2026.

Did any short drama actor and/or actress surprise you with consistently strong performances the first six months of the year?

Share your picks in the comments below.

Drama Duo: Transmigrated a thousand years later to avenge a murdered princess, she teams up with a fox only to unlock memories of a forgotten, tragic love.

Synopsis:
After being tragically murdered by her stepsister, Princess Chu Qun's body becomes the vessel for the soul of an ancient, powerful princess, Chu Yi Hou. Driven by vengeance, she aligns with the Imperial Advisor, Di Chen, to battle dark forces and political enemies. Forgotten memories of a tragic past love resurface. Together, they must fight in an epic war against evil to save each other and bring peace back to the realm.

Tags: Transmigration, Amnesia, Revenge, Tragic love

Drama 1 - I'm Just Reborn to Seek Revenge, Why Are the Gods Trembling
FL: Tian Tian Yi
ML: Li You Lin
Release date: 14 January 2026

Drama 2 - Why Provoke Her, Her Husband Possesses Boundless Demonic Power
FL: Shi Tong
ML: Lan Bo
Release date: 7 April 2026

Similarities:

  • Both MLs rocked long white/silver wigs and long tails in certain scenes. I have to admit, I really dug Li You Lin whenever his character let his foxy side show.
  • Supporting characters provided the comedic relief in both versions.
  • FL successfully got revenge on the stepsister who murdered Princess Chu Qun.

Comparison:

  • Tone - Version 1 was more humorous as it showcased Tian Tian Yi’s charming comedic timing and the warm, good-natured interactions between FL and the supporting characters. In contrast, Version 2 takes a more dramatic approach, focusing heavily on themes of lost love and reconciliation. Version 1 also features far more supernatural elements. I particularly enjoyed the moments when characters transformed into their animal forms.
  • Romance - This romance was definitely more sweet than spicy. Version 2 felt much stronger on the romantic front thanks to all the sweet gestures. I absolutely loved the tanghulu scene! On the other hand, Version 1 had the couple flirting like crazy (does tail-stroking count as foreplay?). That said, the kissing scenes in both versions were a letdown. I can barely remember if Version 1 had a proper kiss, and Version 2 relied way too much on camera angles instead of giving us a full-on, passionate kiss.
  • Acting - All four leads delivered solid individual performances. However, because I view chemistry as a vital subset of acting, I felt the connection between Tian Tian Yi and Li You Lin fell short. While their lusty tail-stroking scenes were delightful, they otherwise seemed to be acting in silos. Maybe the writing is to blame. Version 2, on the other hand, gave us believable chemistry between Shi Tong and Lan Bo, thanks to a much stronger emotional pull between their characters.

My final thoughts:

  • While I enjoyed both dramas for different reasons, I prefer Why Provoke Her, Her Husband Possesses Boundless Demonic Power more than I'm Just Reborn to Seek Revenge, Why Are the Gods Trembling as the former has a stronger romance / partnership arc and better performances.
  • I felt both versions missed the key elements needed to turn them into truly great dramas—ones that fully satisfy the revenge, tragic love, and fantasy tropes.

From Short-Form to Mainstream: Familiar Faces in Love Beyond the Grave

One of my favourite things about watching long-form C-dramas these days is playing a game of "spot the short-drama actor."

The more mini dramas and vertical dramas I watch, the more often it happens. A supporting character appears on screen and suddenly I find myself thinking, "Wait... haven't I seen this person somewhere before?"

That was exactly my experience with Love Beyond the Grave.

As a fan of Chen Fei Yu since Lighter & Princess, I was curious about the drama from the moment it was announced. There was so much discussion surrounding his chemistry with Dilraba that I eventually decided to check it out for myself. Then I looked at the cast list and realised there were quite a few familiar faces from the mini drama and vertical drama world.

I actually delayed publishing this post because I wanted to finish the drama first. To be honest, I struggled to watch the episodes continuously. There were periods when I found myself watching only one or two episodes in a week. However, spotting actors and actresses from the short-form drama industry genuinely became one of the things that kept me engaged and motivated me to continue.

Here are some familiar faces that I recognised while watching Love Beyond the Grave.

Lu Yan Qi (photos 1 & 2)

Role: Shao Yin Yin

Notable works:

My thoughts:
Lu Yan Qi was one of the earliest familiar faces I spotted, making her appearance as early as Episode 2. Having seen her in several short-form productions over the years, I can confidently say she has one of those distinct faces and voices that instantly pop once you have watched enough mini-dramas. She excels at playing feisty, spirited characters, so I was absolutely thrilled to see her cross over into vertical dramas. In fact, her vertical debut, After Sassy Sister Was Cheated On, She Went All Out, just dropped last month.

Zhao Yi Qin (photos 3 & 4)

Role: Han Ling Qiu

Notable works:

My thoughts:
Zhao Yi Qin made an appearance in episode 2, but I didn't realise he was the ML from Butterflied Lover until one of his fans pointed it out in Love Beyond the Grave. I actually watched Butterflied Lover two years ago, but it didn't quite resonate with me due to a lack of chemistry. The fan also recommended Provoke and Hard to Find. Now I just need to find the time and the right mood to dive into them.

Cao Sai Ya (photo 5 & 6)

Role: He Yan

Notable works:

My thoughts:

Cao Sai Ya popped up in Episodes 5 and 6, and I honestly would have completely missed her cameo if it hadn't been for her fans' posts on Weibo. Her makeup made her practically unrecognisable!

Possession of Rose remains my absolute favourite work of hers. She shared a combustible chemistry with her co-star, Chen Ming Hao. Apparently their adorable onscreen flirting actually continued off-camera. I was shocked to find out that Cao Sai Ya is five years younger than Chen Ming Hao, given how effortlessly she pulled off playing the older jiejie to his male lead. I guess the stilettos did some heavy lifting there, because she is surprisingly tiny!

Tu Zhi Ying (photo 7 & 8)

Role: Mai Zi

Notable works:

My thoughts:
Tu Zhi Ying makes her entrance in Episode 13, appearing across several episodes and ultimately securing the most screentime among the short-form talents in Love Beyond the Grave

While I have only seen a handful of her dramas, Playing House is the one that left a lasting impression on me. Despite its campy start, the show completely won me over thanks to her stellar performance and the fantastic romantic tension she and co-star Wen Yuan brought to the screen.

Zhang Hong Ming (photo 9 & 10)

Role: A Si

Notable works:

My thoughts:
Zhang Hong Ming makes his entrance in Episode 17, but Episode 18 is where he truly steals the show. It’s an impressively well-crafted character arc for a mere two-episode stint. What made his appearance even more meaningful was reading his reflections after the episodes were aired. He spoke about how grateful he was to Director Qin Zhen for the chance to "fully shape and understand" his character, A Si. He also shared a sweet thank you to Dilraba and Chen Feiyu for protecting his emotions on set, concluding that he "really love[s] everyone in the crew" and hopes fans continue to support the drama.

My first encounter with him was in Weeds Are Thriving Unchecked, a jiejie romance vertical drama that was just a little too slow-burn and mellow for my liking. That said, he’s officially on my radar; several of his dramas are currently parked in my watchlist, waiting for the right mood to strike.

Hui Yi Yao (photo 11 & 12)

Role:Zi Ji

Notable works:

My thoughts:
Although she had been appearing in the background as Feng Yi's maidservant, it was Episode 27 where her presence truly demanded my attention.

Up until now, I had only seen Hui Yi Yao in Bound by Sin, where she played a bold, mesmerising femme fatale. Her chemistry with co-star Hao Fu Shen was off the charts, and their characters’ intense first encounter left a permanent impression on me. Luckily, the duo has teamed up for a second time in a vertical drama titled Koukou. Given its highly intriguing synopsis, I’ll definitely be queuing it up on iQIYI the moment the right mood strikes.

Wu Yi Jia (photo 13)

Role: Wang Qi

Notable works:

My thoughts:
When he appeared in Episode 27 as the brother and chaperone accompanying a young woman meeting the ML, I recognised his distinct voice before I fully recognised his face.

It is fantastic to see Wu Yi Jia gaining widespread recognition after the massive success of Pursuit of Jade. Alongside that hit, my absolute favourite project of his has to be Covenant with God. He completely rocked that long hairstyle! In this fast-paced modern fantasy, he plays an immortal who transmigrates into the body of a playboy, only to end up swapping souls with the female lead. At just 36 episodes, it’s a beautifully short, highly entertaining watch.

Zhou Pei Chen (photo 14)

Role: He Zhi

Notable works:

My thoughts:
Despite being officially billed in the credits, I completely missed his appearance as He Zhi throughout the entire 40-episode run.

Prior to this, I had only caught him in two other projects: The Maid and You Alone Are Special, the latter of which I actually sought out after spotting his name on the cast list for Love Beyond the Grave. I thoroughly enjoyed his performance in You Alone Are Special, where he delivered a great performance alongside his co-star, Wang Zi Jia. Since Zhou Pei Chen only just crossed over into vertical dramas this year, I am keen to explore his work, especially when he lands a main male lead role.

These are the most recognisable mini drama and vertical drama talents that I spotted in Love Beyond the Grave.

Have you watched Love Beyond the Grave? What do you think of their performances?
Did you spot any familiar faces from the short-form drama world that I overlooked?

I'd love to hear which actors and actresses you recognised. Let me know in the comments!

P.S. I also wrote posts about mini drama and vertical drama talents who appeared in long-form productions. Feel free to check it out if you are interested.

Drama Duo: How a massive family debt forced FL into a contract marriage with CEO ML

Synopsis:
The life of Yun Wan (V1) / Yun Yi (V2) is completely changed by her family's outrageous actions. She is burdened with huge debts after her family member steals and damages CEO Feng Jing Xing's phone. Cornered, she signs a contract marriage with Feng Jing Xing to settle the debt. Ultimately, in their joint efforts to thwart the Feng family's conspiracy, they move from contract marriage to true love.

Miss Yun, Mr. Feng Said You Can't Escape
FL: Wang Lu Qing
ML: Xie Hong Xin
Release date: 30 December 2025

After Mistakenly Spending 1.2 Billion, Mr. Feng Said He Couldn't Escape
FL: Hai Yi Fan
ML: Xiao Yang
Release date: 7 March 2026

Similarities:

  • FL was a hardworking designer who is not intimidated by bullies.
  • ML was so utterly consumed by desire for FL that he actually mandated an intimacy clause into their marriage contract.
  • ML’s assistant was a delight to watch, especially his monologues about his boss.

Comparison:

  • ML characterisation: Version 1’s ML was a toxic asshat who treated FL like a mere plaything. I completely detested the subplots where he sabotaged her job application and literally imprisoned her. Version 2’s ML, on the other hand, is a breath of fresh air. He's a flawed man, but he never strips away her autonomy. Instead, he secretly helps her land a job at his company, and I especially loved that he immediately apologises whenever he hurts her feelings. His character arc felt incredibly earned because the writer actually showed his struggles rather than just telling us about them.
  • Romance: What a contrast! While both couples start out as awkward strangers, the romance in Version 2 develops far more organically. FL willingly embraces her new life as his partner, actively wanting to know him. Version 1, by comparison, radiates a toxic master-and-slave dynamic where the male lead couldn't care less about her perspective. There was zero communication until he was literally hospitalised. His apology might have been genuine, but it came way too late to save the relationship for me.
  • Antagonists: The families on both sides were absolute dumpster fires, with a whole roster of people actively plotting the leads' downfall. That said, Version 2 handled its main antagonist arc beautifully. While both versions get creative with the scheming, Version 2 felt more intense because there was so much more at stake. Plus, that final takedown left me completely stunned. I genuinely didn't expect the antagonist to be dealt with in such a brutal, unexpected way.

My final thoughts:

  • After the absolute misery of watching Miss Yun, Mr. Feng Said You Can't Escape, I honestly didn’t expect to enjoy After Mistakenly Spending 1.2 Billion, Mr. Feng Said He Couldn't Escape. I am so relieved the writer of After Mistakenly Spending 1.2 Billion, Mr. Feng Said He Couldn't Escape made such massive, much-needed overhauls to the plot, especially when it came to fixing ML’s characterisation and rescuing the romance subplot.
  • These two shows put Wang Lu Qing, Hai Yi Fan, and Xiao Yang on my radar. I was so thoroughly impressed by their performances across both shows that I’m now incredibly eager to dive into the rest of their filmographies. I also stumbled upon a fun piece of trivia that blew my mind: Wang Lu Qing has actually teamed up with Cheng Lei in mini dramas The Queen of Attack and The Queen of Attack Season 2!

From Short-Form to Mainstream: Familiar Faces in The First Jasmine

When people talk about actors who successfully transitioned from mini dramas to mainstream productions, Cheng Lei is usually one of the first names that comes to mind.

Many of us discovered him through mini form dramas long before he became a familiar face in long-form productions. Watching his rise over the past few years has been fascinating. From leading mini dramas to landing increasingly prominent roles in mainstream projects, Cheng Lei's career trajectory is proof that the short-form drama industry can be a valuable stepping stone rather than a dead end.

So when I learned that Cheng Lei was starring in The First Jasmine, I immediately became curious about the rest of the cast. A quick look at the cast list revealed several familiar names from the mini drama and vertical drama space.

I started watching The First Jasmine last Monday and have since caught up to Episode 17. Here are a few familiar faces that caught my attention.

Cheng Lei (photos 1 & 2)

Role: Mo Xiu Yao

Notable works in short-form dramas:

My thoughts:
Mo Xiu Yao appears >!from Episode 1!<, and I haven't been able to stop admiring Cheng Lei's expressive eyes ever since.

I was completely mesmerised by Cheng Lei's performance in A Familiar Stranger, which remains one of my favourite mini dramas to this day. He had the perfect presence for a military general—commanding when necessary, yet capable of conveying tenderness and vulnerability in quieter moments.

Looking back, it's easy to understand why he became one of the first mini drama actors to successfully break into the mainstream. His performance in A Familiar Stranger already showed the charisma and screen presence that would later help him transition into larger productions.

Cai Zheng Jie (photos 3 & 4)

Role: Mo Jing Li

Notable works in short-form dramas:

My thoughts:
Mo Jing Li is the second male lead and appears >!from Episode 1!<.

I was first introduced to Cai Zheng Jie through Shameless Lover. Although he played a supporting character, his visuals were so striking that I still remember him today. Love and Strife is easily my favourite. Despite having only 18 episodes of around 15 minutes each, the screenplay was exceptionally well executed. There was no room for unnecessary subplots or filler scenes, and the pacing remained tight throughout. Best of all, the plot twist genuinely caught me off guard.

Liu Qing (photos 5 & 6)

Role: Mo Xiu Wen

Notable works in short-form dramas:

My thoughts:
His appearance was brief, but I spotted him immediately. Mo Xiu Wen first appears in >!Episode 2!<.

I've watched several of Liu Qing's dramas and have come to appreciate how versatile he can be as an actor. Whether he's playing a serious character or a comedic one, he usually manages to leave a lasting impression.

My favourite performance of his remains He from the Deep Sea. His comedic timing was one of the drama's greatest strengths, and he brought a lot of charm and energy to the role.

Yang Ze (photos 7 & 8)

Role: Qin Cang

Notable works in short-form dramas:

My thoughts:
Thanks to the character poster, I recognised Yang Ze the moment he appeared on screen. Qin Cang makes his first appearance in >!Episode 13!<.

If there is a connection between Cheng Lei and Yang Ze, it is director Zeng Qing Jie. Yang Ze has starred in several of Zeng Qing Jie's productions, including Destined to Meet You, The Killer Is Also Romantic, and Butterflied Lover, while Cheng Lei delivered one of his most memorable performances in Zeng Qing Jie's A Familiar Stranger.

My personal favourite Yang Ze drama is The Killer Is Also Romantic. He and Hu Dan Dan delivered powerhouse performances as rival agents in ancient China, serving up chemistry that was nothing short of electric. To this day, I still consider it one of the best mini dramas I've watched.

Sun Xue Ning (photos 9 & 10)

Role: Su Zui Die

Notable works in short-form dramas:

My thoughts:
I have not spotted Sun Xue Ning yet.

So far, I've only seen Sun Xue Ning in Shameless Lover. While I generally enjoyed the drama, I wasn't entirely convinced by her performance during some of the more emotionally intense scenes. In particular, I felt her character should have displayed more anguish when the villain's identity was finally revealed.

That said, I do have My Decoy Bride sitting in my watchlist, so I'm looking forward to seeing more of her work. Perhaps that drama will give me a better appreciation of her acting range.

Hei Ze (photos 11 & 12)

Role: Han Ming Yue

Notable works in short-form dramas:

My thoughts:
I have not spotted Hei Ze yet.

Out of the three dramas mentioned, When Fish Swim to Land easily takes the crown for me. Hei Ze delivers a fantastic performance as a pet shop owner weighed down by heavy emotional baggage. Watching his character gradually lower his defenses, embrace love, and finally face the demons he had been running from for years was incredibly rewarding. And let’s be real, Hei Ze was absolute eye candy here! Even that highly questionable mullet couldn’t stop FL (and me) from absolutely thirsting over him.

These are the mini drama and vertical drama actors that I immediately recognised in The First Jasmine, although I may have missed a few names among the supporting and guest roles.

Are you watching The First Jasmine? What do you think of their performances? Are there any mini drama or vertical drama talents in the cast that I overlooked?

Let me know in the comments!

P.S. I also wrote posts about mini drama and vertical drama talents who appeared in long-form productions. Feel free to check it out if you are interested.

Drama Duo: Nominal uncle and niece with complicated family dynamics fall in love

Synopsis:
Everyone knows that Zhang He Nian is brilliant and unattainable. Only Qin Tang knows how crazy he is under his serious appearance. She wanted to bury this wrong secret love, after all, he was her nominal uncle. But she didn't expect that he would trap her by his side in the name of care, and surrounded her with his passionate love.

Drama 1 - Hide Day and Night
FL: Lan Lan
ML: Wang Yi Ran
Release date: 29 January 2025

Drama 2 - Love Day and Night
FL: Yang Mie Mie
ML: Yu Long
Release date: 3 February 2025

Similarities:
- ML is a soldier who often goes on missions.
- FL is a doctor who gets posted to a hospital in a new city, completely unaware that ML lives there as well.
- Both mothers did not approve of the FL-ML’s romantic relationship.

Comparisons:
- Characterisation - ML in Hide Day and Night behaved like a Neanderthal and was a walking red flag. He constantly ignored the FL's pleas and sulked whenever things did not go his way. In contrast, ML in Love Day and Night was respectful and gentle, entirely avoiding any rough manhandling. A similar contrast can be found in the ML’s sister across both dramas. In Hide Day and Night, the sister was sympathetic toward her brother’s feelings and genuinely cared for the FL’s father. However, in Love Day and Night, the sister was entirely manipulative. She deceived FL’s father into marrying her for money, falsely claiming he was the father of her unborn child.
- Romance - Watching the romance in Hide Day and Night was agonising. FL was forced into intimacy, and her facial expressions the morning after said it all. The chase dynamic was equally exhausting, which isn't surprising since Hide Day and Night runs about 50 minutes longer than Love Day and Night. In stark contrast, Love Day and Night highlighted genuine, mutual desire during the leads' first intimate scene, with absolutely no coercion involved.
- Styling - A huge thank you to the stylists of both dramas for putting Wang Yi Ran and Yu Long in uniforms! It was incredibly refreshing to see Yu Long without the glasses he so often wears for his CEO roles. I also loved the outfits and hairstyles chosen for Yang Mie Mie as the stylist did a fantastic job of contrasting the teenage FL with her mid-20s self. Her wardrobe actually gave me major Legally Blonde 2 and Jackie Kennedy vibes.

My final thoughts:
- Hands down, Love Day and Night is the far superior version. The romance and family drama get straight to the point, and the female lead actually accepts the confession before things get physical. You can practically feel the love and desire radiating off the screen, unlike in that other version.
- Honestly, don't even bother with Hide Day and Night. Unless you love suffering through a toxic ML, or you're a Wang Yi Ran stan who refuses to leave a single project of his unwatched, save your time and bypass this one.

From Short-Form to Mainstream: Familiar Faces in Love Beyond the Grave

One of the most enjoyable parts of watching C-dramas lately has been spotting familiar faces from the short-form drama world (mini dramas and vertical dramas) appearing in larger productions.

I only started watching Chinese dramas in 2024 through long-form mainstream series before gradually venturing into mini dramas and, eventually, vertical dramas. The more time I spent watching short-form content, the more actors and actresses I began recognising across different formats.

That was exactly what happened with Love Beyond the Grave.

As a fan of Lighter & Princess, I was naturally curious when I started hearing all the buzz surrounding Chen Fei Yu’s chemistry with Dilraba. Between the casting news, fan discussions, and the impressive cast list, I decided to give the drama a try.

I actually took a while to publish this post because I wanted to wait until I had finished the drama first. To be honest, I struggled at times to watch the episodes continuously. However, one thing that kept me engaged was spotting familiar actors and actresses from the short-form drama space. Every time a recognisable face appeared, I found myself paying a little more attention to the screen.

Seeing these performers pop up in a major production like Love Beyond the Grave feels especially rewarding. It is always exciting to watch short-form actors and actresses make the jump into the highly competitive long-form drama industry and hold their own alongside established stars.

Here are a few familiar faces I noticed while watching Love Beyond the Grave.

Cao Sai Ya (photo 3 & 4)

Tu Zhi Ying (photo 5 & 6)

Role: Mai Zi

Notable works:

My thoughts:
Tu Zhi Ying makes her entrance in Episode 13, appearing across several episodes and ultimately securing the most screentime among the short-form talents in Love Beyond the Grave

While I have only seen a handful of her dramas, Playing House is the one that left a lasting impression on me. Despite its campy start, the show completely won me over thanks to her stellar performance and the fantastic romantic tension she and co-star Wen Yuan brought to the screen.

Zhang Hong Ming (photo 7 & 8)

Role: A Si

Notable works:

My thoughts:
Zhang Hong Ming makes his entrance in Episode 17, but Episode 18 is where he truly steals the show. It’s an impressively well-crafted character arc for a mere two-episode stint.

My only other encounter with him was in Weeds Are Thriving Unchecked, a jiejie romance vertical drama that was just a little too slow-burn and mellow for my liking. That said, he’s officially on my radar; several of his dramas are currently parked in my watchlist, waiting for the right mood to strike.

Hui Yi Yao (photo 9 & 10)

Wu Yi Jia (photo 11)

Zhou Pei Chen (photo 12)

Have you watched Love Beyond the Grave? What do you think of their performances?
Are there other mini or vertical drama actors/actresses in this cast that I did not catch?

Let me know in the comments!

P.S. I also wrote posts about mini drama and vertical drama talents who appeared in long-form productions. Feel free to check it out if you are interested.
