Loved the lights at Essaim, so I made a miniature version at home (DIY Tutorial)

I really love the visual atmosphere at Essaim, particularly how they designed these huge colored air vents.

So I recreated a miniature version for my living room!

You can check out the result in this video.

Here is a quick tutorial below, with some photos and the supply list if you'd like to recreate this at home too!

📋 Supply list:

👷🏻‍♂️ Building tips:

  • I searched for a long time for the perfect air vent, but one with that many slatted lines doesn't exist at such a small size. So I opted for a flush-mount LED ceiling light, onto which I stuck strips of gaffer tape to recreate the illusion.
  • LED ceiling lights often come with exposed wires or a terminal strip (domino), so you'll need to attach a standard wall plug to use it like a regular lamp.
  • Use the grid lines on a cutting mat to cut nice, straight strips of gaffer tape. Don't try to cut strips that span the entire width of the light fixture all at once, as it will be very difficult to position them straight afterwards.
  • I started with two 1 cm vertical strips positioned at each third of the width to serve as alignment guidelines.
  • The height of the light-emitting area on the panel is about 21 cm. The vents at Essaim have 9 black bars. I assumed that the 9 black bars were twice as thick as the 10 light gaps, which gives 21 cm / (10 + 2 × 9) = 21 / 28 => 0.75 cm for the light gaps and 1.5 cm in thickness for the gaffer tape bars.
  • You can draw the spacing lines on a piece of paper and use it as a guide to trace pencil marks directly onto the light fixture (see photo).
  • At the very end, I covered the 2 initial vertical strips with a 1.5 cm strip to conceal the ends of the horizontal strips and create a clean finish for the whole piece.

FR Version 🇫🇷
