I missed AR Thursday...

... so in a spirit of abject repentance, I'll combine the last two posting trends of ARs and .308s with this AR10, built out as a DMR-style rifle. This is a custom build which was a COVID project about six years ago.

I know, I know, the first photo doesn't show the muzzle brake; this is one of a number of guns for which I deeply need to shoot updated photos. I included a second photo of just the brake to compensate.

Build details:

  • Aero Precision M5 upper/lower receiver set
  • Toolcraft DLC 6.5 Creedmoor double ejector BCG
  • Aero Precision AR10 charging handle
  • Non-adjustable low profile .750 gas block
  • Faxon 20" heavy fluted 5R match barrel
  • VG6 Epsilon 762 muzzle brake
  • SLR Rifleworks Ion 13.5 Ultralight handguard
  • Vortex Viper PST Gen1 2.5-10x44
  • Aero Precision ultralight cantilever scope mount
  • Magpul PRS Gen3 stock
  • Ergo Tactical Deluxe Grip with palm shelf
  • ALG ACT trigger with 6lb hammer spring
  • Harris 1A2-BRM bipod

Total unloaded weight is around 11 lb, 10 oz. Honestly I feel that's not bad given the large optic and PRS stock, and having some mass to it isn't at all a deal-killer for a rifle that mostly lives and breathes on the bench or prone.

I've only taken it out very little, and keep meaning to do so more, but it's quite reasonable recoil for a .308. Bizarrely, it somehow managed to end up slightly undergassed, despite that practically every other AR10 is substantially overgassed, and Faxon barrels from around that time period in particular had some QC struggles which resulted in them being dramatically, overwhelmingly overgassed. I have no explanation whatsoever for this.

Can't Hate Three-Oh-Eight (or so I'm told)

One of my several .308 Win girlies. This one's a KelTec RFB 18", almost completely stock. Optic is an ACOG TA11H-308, 3.5x35mm with a M240 horseshoe dot reticle.

Wheelgun Wednesday

Emphatically not a New Gun Day - this is a vintage 1976 H&R 950 in .22LR which was given to me by my wife as a wedding present upon our marriage last year. It had previously been in her family for some years. Nothing fancy, but I think it has character and charm.

Wheelgun Wednesday?

Do we do Wheelgun Wednesday up in here?

I actually brought this home several weeks ago, but have managed to miss posting it to reddit every Wednesday since then, up until now.

New Colt Python, .357 Magnum, 5" matte stainless steel. Original Hogue grips since replaced with walnut target grips.

I've only had her out to the range once, but she's big enough that firing full steam .357 wasn't a problem at all. Even without the Hogue rubber, the recoil didn't feel much worse than my subcompact 9mm.

(crossposted from liberalgunowners, but manually, because I messed up the photos on that post.)

Vintage woodbois!

I don't know many other folks who have the capability of doing this - either because they lack three vintage US service rifles, or because they lack the eldritch forgotten lore of how to employ the stacking swivel. Probably both, mostly.

Rifle nearest the camera is a prewar Rock Island Arsenal 1903, serial number estimated to late 1908 production from arsenal records. Yes, this makes it one of the early rifles pre-improved heat treat.

The other two rifles are both wartime Springfield Armory M1 Garands; one serial number estimated to June 1943 production, the other August 1943. These are both CMP Expert Grade reclaimed rifles with new Faxon commercial barrels and Boyd's walnut furniture.

All three rifles are in all-original configuration, though as expected for any service rifle having undergone an armory rebuild, they're parts mongerels.

Apologies if this violates Rule 8 for any vintage service rifle enthusiasts!
