Lone Star Restoration
I picked up a Lonestar that needed some TLC. As shown in the photos, I have three pickguards: two aftermarket and the original. Left is white pearl, middle is aged pearl, and the right is the original guard with heavy yellowing.
The white pearl is too bright for the guitar, so that one is out. The aged pearl looks great and matches the naturally aged pickups really well. The original guard was in rough shape with what looked like cigarette tar, but it actually cleaned up nicely and still has a good shine after using a plastic polish. The issue is the yellowing, which is pretty extreme. I would like to keep the original for authenticity, but I’m unsure if the color is too far gone.
The aged aftermarket guard looks great, but the humbucker routing is noticeably different from the original. It has a much narrower section under the humbucker, which makes it look less correct for the model. The routing on the aftermarket is also more “square” in shape.
Looking for input. Am I being overly critical about the yellowing on the original pickguard, or is it better to go with the aged aftermarket one despite the routing difference?
