9700X dead on X870 Steel Legend WiFi

TL;DR: My 9700X died during gameplay. AMD approved the RMA and sent an upgraded replacement after almost two weeks. ASRock also approved the motherboard RMA, but I decided not to proceed for now.

I knew this was probably a matter of “when” rather than “if,” and that day came a couple of weeks ago. There was a sliver of hope it would happen to me because I didn't have X3D CPU, but nope. I built the system in April 2025, so it lasted a little over a year.

While playing NBA 2K, the screen froze and the red CPU light came on. I immediately knew what's up. I tried the usual troubleshooting: memory swap, BIOS flash, reseating the CPU, checking all cables, etc. I didn’t have another board to test with, but everything pointed to a fried CPU.

CPU RMA

The AMD RMA process was slower than expected. I would reply within minutes, but it usually took them a day or two to respond. After more than a week, the RMA was approved, but then it stalled again when they had to send the replacement.

After I pushed for an update, they said they didn’t have a 9700X in stock, so I asked for an equal or better alternative. They offered a 9900X or 7800X3D, and I accepted the 7800X3D. In total, it took 12 days to receive the replacement CPU, shipped from Miami to Toronto.

Motherboard RMA

ASRock also approved the motherboard RMA after about a week, but I decided not to proceed right now. I need my computer back up ASAP and can’t afford more downtime, and I read something about paying for shipping back.

What’s next

AMD confirmed that the replacement CPU does not come with a new warranty. My original warranty continues, so I have less than two years left.

For now, I’ll keep using this motherboard and CPU combo until the CPU warranty is close to expiring, then I’ll likely replace the motherboard. I really wanted to like this board, but I don’t feel comfortable going out of warranty on ASRock. This will probably be my first and last ASRock product.
