ASRock boards and X3D CPUs

Something like a year ago there were reports about supposedly ASRock motherboards killing AMD CPUs, mainly X3D.

I remember it was a big drama, even Steve from GN was questioning ASRock employees at last year's computex or some similar event.

How did this all end? Did either of the parties (ASRock or AMD) confirmed issue was on their side? Did they patch it with bios updates or is it still ongoing issue?

PC refuses to go to windows if secure boot is enabled

So I had an issue with Faceit AC because it showed that secure boot was disabled, which was odd because I have been playing for a year straight with no issues, so I go to BIOS and check to see that it actually is not active, I reset the keys, checked that CSM is disabled and once secure boot became active it just sent me back to BIOS, I have checked and confirmed that the drive is GPT format, TPM is set to AMD one, and CSM is always disabled so I dont know what is going on with this.

My specs are;

Asrock B450 Pro4 (version 4.60)

Ryzen 5 3500X

G.Skill aegis 16g DDR4

500 gig ssd

RX 6600

Another One Down! x870 Pro Rs fried my 9800x3D

Won’t post even to bios, gives a white debug light or sometimes green debug light but never posts. The only time you can get it to post is after a reseat, it’ll turn on for maybe 3-5 seconds. Just enough for the new cpu detected screen to come up, then it immediately shuts off and goes back to the green or white debug light. I have since replaced the motherboard (thinking, more coping, that it was just the motherboard) to a msi mag b850 tomahawk max. It still wouldn’t post so i bought a new 9800x3d. Posted immediately. Thanks Asrock! I was running bios 4.10 since about april or may, and before that I was on 4.03. I never ran anything lower than 4.03. If you have a x870 Pro Rs and you think it won’t happen to you, I would buy a new motherboard asap. Don’t buy ASUS either they have the same issue.

Dead Customer support ?

My RX9070XT TC 16 GO GPU just broke after a game crash. I bought it in mid December last year and it completely failed last week. I’ve been trying to get a hold of their customer support in California but the phone rings for 3 seconds then goes to a full voicemail box. Like are we SERIOUS! I filled out the form online as well but have got no response:( if anyone has any idea how to get a hold of ASrock for a replacement that would be much appreciated, thanks.

Edit: I managed to get through to customer support. For anybody looking to reach customer support in America going through their phone line worked for me(just takes 30 try’s and hoping someone actually picks up). Once you’re actually talking with someone they are super helpful. Hope this helps someone, thanks to all the comments!

It happened.

Good morning everyone!

After approximately 1 year and 3 months, it finally happened. That is all. No muck. No fuss. It can happen to anyone, no matter how safe you are. 😊

Turned the PC off Sunday night; woke up monday morning, turned it on while I took a shower and put on some coffee, only for it to be stuck like that with no fan spin after ~30 minutes.

I did try to "revive" the PC, but at 6:30 in the morning, 2 hours before work, I was more worried about recovering for my standup meeting (working laptop, work) rather than put much effort into it. Drain AC power and reset CMOS got the case fans spinning full throttle, but no movement on Dr. debug 00. BIOS Flashback was a success but also changed nothing.

I vaguely remember my BIOS settings, so for reference:

  • AMD EXPO enabled
  • VDDR_SOC set to 1.15
  • OC Tweaker \ External Voltage Settings
    • VDDCR_CPU Voltage: Offset mode
    • Offset Voltage: -100
    • VDDCR_CPU LLC: Changed from "Auto" to "Level 2"
  • BIOS version: 4.20

I had also loaded the conservative -15mV curve optimizer profile with 85c tjmax target from the profiles that come with the motherboard.

System specs:

  • Mobo: ASRock X870E Nova Wifi
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • GPU: ASUS GeForce RTX 5080 ROG Astral OC
  • Ram: 64GB G.Skill Triden Z5 Neo DDR5-6000 CL28 (F5-6000J2836G32GX2-TZ5NR)

For anyone that have gone through the same thing, did you contact ASRock? AMD? RMA through the store the items were purchased from? TIA

ASRock X870 Steel Legend Wifi won't post

I would rather not RMA Motherboard unless absolutely necessary, but I seem to have this issue where I will get either Red light for CPU or both red light for CPU and blinking yellow light for DRAM when I try to boot. It will boot (most of the times) if I hit restart button when it's stuck in this process (after waiting a few minutes and letting it try to resolve itself)

I have updated BIOS to latest.

No overclocking of CPU or RAM (just using AMD EXPO)

Secure boot, standard. My secure boot did "magically" get disabled when the issue first started happening. After fixing it booted a couple times normally but went back to the same issue and secure boot is enabled still.

Anyone else run into these issues? Any help/suggestions that help me avoid RMA whole motherboard would be appreciated.

Can’t find C.A.M/Resizable Bar in b450m steel legend

PC config:
Asrock b450m steel legend (bios P3.60)
Ryzen 5 3600
Rtx 5050

As per some guides, I disabled CSM in bios to enable above 4G decoding. But there is no option for C.A.M or Resizable Bar showing below 4G decoding. Is it not available for this board or do I need to update bios?

Should I replace my ASRock X870 Steel Legend WiFi?

I built my new PC on July 14 with the following specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Motherboard: ASRock X870 Steel Legend WiFi
GPU: ASRock Radeon RX 9070 XT Steel Legend
RAM: 32GB (2×16GB) G.Skill DDR5-6000 CL30

Until a fellow Redditor recently pointed me to the reports about ASRock X870 boards allegedly killing 9800X3D CPUs, I had absolutely no idea this issue existed.

I had been running the system on the factory BIOS 3.16 since I built it. After finding out about the reports, I updated to BIOS 4.43 yesterday.

The PC has been completely stable so far:
No crashes or BSODs
No boot issues
No random restarts
0 WHEA-Logger errors
EXPO enabled at 6000 MT/s
SoC voltage is around 1.19V in HWiNFO

I’ve played multiple games and even built shaders in The Last of Us Part I and Hogwarts Legacy without any issues..Even though everything appears to be working perfectly should I replace the motherboard while it’s still new, or would you continue using it now that it’s on BIOS 4.43?

Update: Unfortunately, something happened. maybe sooner than expected. The system suddenly refused to boot. All fans and RGB turn on, but there’s no display and the motherboard gets stuck on the CPU debug LED. I tried power cycling, checking connections and the usual basic troubleshooting, but no luck. The system was completely stable until this happened. I’m taking the motherboard and CPU to the retailer for testing. What a MESS! My complete setup is merely 20 days old. Recent BIOS update might have done something?

9950X3d + X870E Nova Wifi started to get '03' code three times every cold boot

So I think I have the classic signs of a dying CPU based from the experiences and comments here in Reddit and right now I'm just ruling out a few more things (full reseating and CMOS stuff) in a desperate way to maybe save my CPU/Mobo or whatever is at fault.

Last week I got the code '03' and I do not know what it was so I just turned off and on my PC again and it booted to windows without any issues then the day after it happened again but I needed to turn off/on my computer three times before I reach windows and it's been like that for a few days.

I did some digging and saw the reports here and then I updated my bios from 3.15 -> 4.43, used default UEFI settings, turned off EXPO and for 5 consecutive days I didn't get the code '03' then on the 6th day I got it again and yet again still three times of turn off/on cycle before booting successfully.

Does anyone have any success in fixing this? I saw the LN2 workaround but some said that it doesn't really fix the core issue and will still going to lead to '00' longer. Every morning is full of dread and anxiety if it will still boot up but it seems that I have to accept the fact that I will have to RMA my CPU/Mobo along with the headache.

Does AMD still accepts RMA fast as long as I have the requirements and proof of purchase? I've read that ASRock support is a hit or miss but the comments about that was from a few months or a year ago so I'm not sure what's the situation now.

Full Specs:

CPU : AMD Ryzen 9950X3D
GPU : Zotac 5080 Solid Core OC
Mobo : Asrock X870E Nova Wifi
RAM : Crucial Pro 5600 96GB
Power Supply : Corsair RM1000x

EDIT: Forgot to mention that my Rig is around 14-15 months old which is the same timeframe with other reports

PC won’t post, tried everything……..

My PC originally froze, and I was told it might be related to compatibility issues between Ryzen 9000 CPUs and ASRock motherboards. I ended up RMAing both my Ryzen 5 9600X and ASRock B650I Lightning WiFi and received replacements.

I rebuilt the system with the new CPU and motherboard, but it still won’t POST. Everything powers on—fans spin, RGB lights up—but the power button LED blinks about 2–4 times per second. USB ports provide power (my phone charges), but my keyboard never lights up or initializes, and I get no display output from the motherboard HDMI.

Components:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 9600X
GPU: ASRock Radeon RX 9070 XT Steel Legend
Motherboard: ASRock B650I Lightning WiFi
RAM: 32GB TeamGroup T-Create DDR5
PSU: Corsair SF850 Platinum
CPU cooler: Thermalright dual-tower air cooler
Storage: Samsung NVMe SSD
Case: NCASE M2
Monitor: MSI 175Hz display

I’ve already tried:
● Reseating the CPU and RAM
● Testing each original RAM stick individually
● Using known-good RAM from a friend’s system
● Swapping in a known-good PSU with its own cables
● Clearing CMOS
● Successfully updating the BIOS
● Waiting long enough for DDR5 memory training
● Removing GPU, SSD, and all non-essential components
● Booting with only CPU, cooler, and one RAM stick
● Testing the motherboard outside the case to rule out shorts
● Trying multiple HDMI cables and a confirmed working monitor

Side note my motherboard does have LEDs for debugging it uses on button lights I believe and a speaker but I don’t have one.

The motherboard already shipped with a BIOS version that supports the 9600X, but I updated it anyway just to be safe.

At this point I’m running out of ideas, probably going to buy another brands motherboard at this point. If nothing else works, I’ll probably go to Micro Center since I’m lucky enough to have one about an hour away—but I’d really prefer not to spend more money just to diagnose the issue.

I’m also confused because I’ve now gone through two CPUs and two motherboards, and I still get the exact same no-POST behavior I don’t remember it blinking before on the old hardware though.

Worth updating BIOS on X870E NOVA?

This is my first PC build (built almost a year ago), and it's been running phenomenally after doing all the BIOS tweaks and all that when I set it up (it's a blur now what those changes were).

I'm still on BIOS 3.2, and I noticed they already released 4.43, so I'm a bit behind.

Should I update if everything is running well?
I know everyone was scared about burnt CPUs this time last year, but people always complain about problems and rarely talk about it if it's working as it should, so I never cared much about that.

Specs are:
RTX 5090
Ryzen 9 9950X
X870E Nova
64gb RAM

Need advice before I fry my second 9800X3D...

Hello!

So a couple of weeks ago my PC wouldn't boot. I tried every troubleshoot in the book, and finally determined that my CPU is cooked... It was an ASRock B850 Riptide paired with a 9800X3D, built in april of 2025. No problems up until its untimely demise, RIP.

Now I have a new CPU arriving tomorrow, decided to go with a 9850X3D, purely because I got a better deal for it.

The question I have is;

Do I just go for it and use my new CPU with the same mobo? Or do I hold off an order a completely different mobo, say a Gigabyte or MSI one? From what I've read this sudden death unfortunately seems to be not too uncommon and more so with the lesser mobo brands.

Pretty good RMA experience (Steel Legend B850M no boot)

TL;DR: ASRock was very good with a motherboard RMA. RMA was approved without a bunch of back and forth. Prepaid shipping label was supplied without me having to ask for it. Replacement was sent pretty quickly and I have a PC up and running with the new motherboard. I didn't put my new 9800X3D back in it, just in case. //

Since there's a lot of negative feelings about ongoing issues, I thought I would take the time to at least say that my RMA experience was positive. These are the first major RMAs I ever really had to attempt with computer stuff.

9800X3D, Steel Legend B850M, I had the intermittent green LED on boot where a reset used to help it finish booting, until one day I finally couldn't get past the green LED. I took the PC down to basics, removed all drives just to see if it would POST, removed accessories, 1 stick of good RAM, plugged into integrated graphics, etc. Nothing worked.

AMD was pretty fast with RMA approval for the CPU although initially it felt like they almost had more hoops for me to jump through than ASRock ended up having. Even though I supplied an order page with details right away, at one point AMD wrote back to me and asked for my initial Best Buy order confirmation email from early 2025 in .EML format. Of course I didn't have an 18 month old email so I was worried this was how they were going to deny me. Luckily they accepted a full PDF download of my order invoice from Best Buy. Then even after that, they replied and said my phone number wasn't shown in the order information and they needed to know which phone number was associated with my Best Buy order. I've changed numbers a few times over the years and wasn't totally sure which number I would have had with Best Buy at the time. Again I got really nervous that they'd be able to deny me a $500 CPU because of this, but I took my best guess at which phone number to send them and then the RMA was approved. Looking back on this now I realize AMD actually made me a lot more nervous waiting for approval than ASRock.

I started out nervous with ASRock at first because all the information you can find for North America says they expect you to deal with the retailer who sold you the board. I knew there would be no help there but I took the time to message Newegg and just double check that they weren't going to offer any help for a motherboard I ordered over a year ago, and of course they said no.

I had heard you should just email the ASrock support email and ask to be linked to the warranty system website as there was no easy way to find it. I supplied all my details, order info etc in my very first email, they replied quickly and linked me to the site for requesting an RMA.

I don't think there was really any additional back and forth like there was with AMD. I mentioned that AMD already agreed to take the CPU back, and I guess I provided all the necessary info because ASRock didn't ask for anything else before approving.

Next I had heard that after you get approved you might have to pester them for the prepaid return label by mentioning that they had promised to pay for shipping in the Gamer's Nexus interview. I fully expected I would have to make a stink (or just pay the shipping myself because I hate asking for things) but my RMA approval email came with a prepaid label attached right away without me asking. I was happy to see that.

Packed my item well, made sure the socket cover was on, followed every direction about having my RMA number clear on the outside of the box etc. It took longer for my motherboard to make it back to ASRock in CA, a few days passed after getting an email that my RMA was received, and then a replacement was on its way back to me. I assembled a PC with it yesterday and everything is working so far.

This was kind of a weird situation in terms of not being sure if I want to drop an X3D chip in the same board even if all my RMAs were taken care of. So instead my 9800X3D is now in an ASUS TUF board (I know, rumors that ASUS has some issues killing these chips too), and I used my replacement Steel Legend B850M with a 9600x CPU that I had.

As some people have theorized, would AMD really be quietly taking these chips back for RMA at a loss if they felt motherboard vendors were really the ones at fault? I'm not sure, but I'm open to the possibility that this is really an AMD problem and ASRock has been thrown under the bus for the failure rate. I'm no expert but it seems to me like maybe the memory controller died or something. But I appreciate that both RMAs were taken care of since as far as I know we still have no 100% explanation for what is going on here. I wouldn't have wanted to only RMA the CPU and then drop it into the very same board and wait for issues again, with people insisting that it's the ASRock boards causing the problems.

The replacement motherboard was sent to me with the newest 4.43 firmware. I think I had my old board updated up to 4.10 always hoping that the firmware updates were going to fix the boot issues. The 9800X3D I was sent was a more recent batch number. Hopefully no more issues. Even though I was too scared to put the 9800X3D back into the Steel Legend and I've instead made two different PCs out of it.

I've used ASRock for a long time in builds because they were always affordable and decent features and designs. I hope some day we have a complete understanding of what caused all these issues because I don't necessarly want to have to join the "never again ASRock" camp.

I thought for sure something would go wrong in my attempts to get my parts replaced but everything was handled quickly.

AMD SAM PROBLEM

As I mentioned in the title, when I enable AMD SAM in the BIOS settings, the monitor displays a “no signal” error. However, when I disable AMD SAM, it boots up without any issues. I remember having this setting enabled before, but whenever I try to enable it again, this problem occurs.

The CSM setting is disabled.

I switched to a 9950X3D, but should I just leave everything as it is?

I’m using a B650 PG Lightning with BIOS version 4.41, and I’m only using EXPO with 6000MHz memory.

I had absolutely no issues with the 7800X3D, but I’ve heard about the issues with the 9800X3D and 9950X3D, so I’m a little worried. Especially since it’s such an expensive CPU.
