Are Ryzen chips on the B850i still dying?

Hi all, I am in the process of building a PC - I LOVE ASRock boards, especially their SFF variants, and my last pc had their b650i as I wanted a Ryzen 9 series and had heard about the BIOS bricking CPUs.

My question is, is this still an issue, or has it been addressed/resolved in a bios patch? Are Ryzen CPUs still getting bricked from ASRock boards?

Thank you!

Second hand board under warranty from another country

Hi guys.

I bought an ASRock B850 motherboard second-hand. The board is still under warranty and I have the original invoice from a Polish retailer. Unfortunately, the motherboard appears to be faulty – dual-channel RAM is unstable/non-functional, while single-channel works correctly.

I've already tested:

Latest BIOS

EXPO disabled

Multiple RAM kits

Different CPU (CPU works fine in another motherboard)

Socket pins are not damaged

The Polish retailer has not responded to my emails so far.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? Were you able to get support directly from ASRock or through a local distributor, even though you were not the original owner?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Fearmongering or truth??

Bought some parts for my first build
7800x3d
Asrock B650 Pro rs wifi

A good amount people are saying that it was the wrong choice and i should straight up return it because its not worth the risk;
Is this right? Should I return it and get a MSI or Asus board? Thanks for the advice!

Mine fried as well, wondering if it's still ok to use for now.

Hey all! As I was playing PoE 2, my game crash and froze. After turning off and turning back on PC there as no display and I saw that there was a red CPU light.

After tons of research and troubleshoot, it looks my CPU (among many others) has been fried. So I reached out to AMD, got the RMA approval, and I just shipped it today. Now, I wait.

I am just wondering for those who got their RMA'd CPU, do you still use the same motherboard? And has it been good so far? I want to get the MSI tomahawk but money is tight at the moment. So I have no choice but to use the same one while doing things like undervolt, update BIOS, etc.

CPU: 9800X3D

GPU: 4060 ti 16gb

Motherboard: X870 Riptide

RAM: Acer Predator Vesta II RGB DDR5 RAM 64GB (32GBx2) 6000MHz CL30 PC5-4800 (which is like $1000 now lol)

PSU: Corsair RM1200x

Got all of these around Nov/Dec 2024. Some people said I may have gotten a "bad batch" of the new 9800x3d's? Gives me a little hope.

Should I return my ASRock B850M Steel Legend WiFi to Amazon?

I haven't used the motherboard yet. My CPU is R7 7800X3D. I will update the BIOS before installing the CPU and I will disable sleep mode on my PC. Do you think it is still a risky choice? Should I return it?

Asrock RMA support

Has anyone gotten a response from them? I wrote about a failed Taichi 3-4 weeks ago and haven't received a response.

I also wrote to Newegg to reach out and they haven't given me a response yet either.

Another dead 9800X3D

After a year of great usage, it happened.

With my ASROCK X870E Nova motherboard, I’m getting a dreaded what seems like almost boot, but a simple error code of “0 0” and nothing. Can’t get into BIOS etc. attempted a CMOS reset, unplugging everything, reseating RAM and making sure all power cables are securely plugged in, nothing.

I also did a flash BIOS update of my motherboard, and still nothing.

The only thing I can think is that I finally have had happened what was seemingly happening a lot last year, my CPU suddenly died and my Motherboard may be involved.

Unsure, but warranty claim on CPU is currently “under review”.

Hoping new CPU doesn’t take too long to be received.

Edit: because people keep asking. I had updated my BIOS 3-4 times over the past year, most recently from a few months ago.

Ryzen 5 7600 + B650M Pro X3D - RGB RAM enciende pero no da imagen. Ya probé todo.

Build:
CPU: Ryzen 5 7600 100-100001015BOX
Mother: ASRock B650M Pro X3D WiFi
RAM: Kingston FURY Beast DDR5 6000 CL36 32GB (2x16)
GPU: ASRock RX 9060 XT Challenger 16GB
SSD: Crucial T500 1TB
PSU: XPG Pylon 650W 80+ Bronze

Mi PC no bootea.

No Post with X870 Pro RS - solid Red/Yellow CPU and DRAM LEDs

Hello,

I am experiencing No Post with X870 Pro RS - solid Red/Yellow cpu and dram leds. What I tried so far: putting single ram stick in every position, waiting for 5 minutes between each try, bios flashback, taking out gpu and trying integrated graphics, changing cpu thermal paste, resetting the battery. No success.

Cpu - ryzen 7 9700x Ram - kingston ddr5 6000Mhz kf560c30bwek2-32
Note: leds are shining right after pressing power button, no delay, in this case I'm guessing it's not related to memory training, rather some motherboard thing.
Note2: for the last few weeks, I’ve been experiencing broken startup: i got logged out of all accounts on windows, then startup apps failed to start with boot.

Best board for the 9800x3d?

Recently had a bad encounter with the X870e Taichi Lite. I think it was a bad board, you can find the post on my profile if you want some more context but I think the chipset was fried on arrival. I've returned that board and while I wait for the refund I want to know what board I should get. I doubt that I will get another X870e Taichi Lite as I dont think its fully the right fit for my build.

Here are my specs and requirements:
-9800x3d
-32gb of V-color manta ray DDR5-6000 (CL30)
-Nvidia Founder 3090
-EVGA 3090 X3C Ultra
-2tb Samsung 980 Pro
-1tb Samsung 980e

-I run gaming and AI with the dual 3090, so I want at the very least a single PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 x16 slot with Bifurcation OR dual slots that can run at x8/x8, it doesnt matter what spacing since I run SlimSAS risers for the GPUs.
-I also would like at least 3 SSDs, I have two right now but as soon as the NVMe prices drop (cope) then I can install a Gen 5 one for more storage

Possible boards I've looked at
-I did notice that the X870 Taichi Creator might be a better board for me as it has 3 PCIe x16 slots that can run at x8/x8/x4 which would be nice for a NVMe or SATA expansion, maybe other cards if I ever run those.

-I was also looking at the MSI MPG X670E CARBON WIFI as it has similar features but its an X670 board with less I/O speed and support. I would be fine doing that as I know that the 600 series boards are generally more stable with these 9800x3ds, but if no one here has heard of any issues with the ASRock then I would be happy to give them another shot, I havent seen many posts about it which could be a good sign but I doubt as many people bought it.

The only thing is that the MSI is on sale right now on Newegg, so if I want to get it I should probably order it soon, but should I wait for my Newegg refund? If anyone has experience with Newegg returns I would love to know how long it took you to get a refund or if they disputed it in any way.

TL:DR, I think my X870e Taichi Creator was DOA, Im getting a new board, what do I get?

Is my 9800x3d dead? (Steel Legend B850)

CPU and Motherboard (ASRock Steel Legend WiFi B850) both purchased Jan 2025 and system has been running great until my AIO water pump started making noises and my temps went up like 5° on average. Rebuilt the PC into a new case with a new AIO cooler 2 weeks ago and also updated the bios at that time to the latest version.

Fast forward 2 weeks later and I walked into my office to see that my PC was turned off (I never turn it off and it's on a UPS in case of power outages). Tried turning it back on and all I get is a solid red LED light near the corner of the motherboard.

I've powered it off at the PSU for a hours. Change to 1 stick of RAM, reset bios via pins and by yanking the battery out. Still just a solid red light. I've left it powered on thinking it was a RAM sync thing but after 2 hours nothing changed.

d0 error on motherboard after BIOS update

First if all apologies on the blurry pic.

Ive been using this pc since july last year, but 2 days ago i updated my BIOS to the latest version, at first it boots fine then i enter in the bios to enable expo, change suspend to ram to "disable" and enable deep sleep(as on this board even if you whut down the pc the rgb on the motherboard still lights up) after i click save and exit the pc seemed to be booting then suddenly everythings shut down, then it restart by it self and showed me d0 error.

Ive tried to update the bios again using bios flashback but its still the same, then i took the pc apart to check at the socket and cpu, the cpu seemed to have a deformity on the side not sure when that occured as i never took apart this pc before, but honestly when i build this pc i didnt even check the hardware properly for deformity(stupid, i know). So am i fucked?

Heres the list of troubleshooting i did :

-re installes BIOS (BIOS flashback)

-disconnected all USB, RGB and GPU till only the CPU and 1 stick of RAM and change the RAM position and also changed the RAM stick

-reseated the CPU

-Loosen the AIO on the CPU

-change the CPU power cable

-clear cmos using button and taking the battery out overnight

Pc Specification :

-Ryzen 7 9800X3D

-Asrock X870E taichi (i was aware of the issue with amd 9000 cpu early this year)

-Nvidia RTX 5080

-Gskill trident Z 16GB×2 6000Mhz Cl30

-Thermalright Frozen warframe 420mm AIO

-Corsair RMX850

I use this PC daily, mostly for work and maybe 3-4 times a week to game on it. Really thankful if some of you guys can give some insight or any advice for this.

Update : the issue was the processor, it died on me and i was told it might take a month to get a replacement. Might be because the asrock + amd combo.

Poll for everyone else with 8xx boards and X3D/9XXX

As we see posts about dead cpus, I'm curious to see what might be the ratio of dead cpus to people running them just fine.

This is for 800 series and up motherboards with X3D and the 9000 series chips.

Now I know some people dont report dead cpus until a year out but seeing comments mixed between good and bad results with Asrock boards. Just trying to get raw data and put some minds at ease or see the bigger picture

CMOS battery replacement

I've been having freezing issues right on the MB splash screen. I reset the CMOS and that seems to have fixed it, at least temporarily.

In doing so, I saw that the CMOS battery (2032) seems to be in a small black plastic casing, which is stuck to the area where the onboard wifi connector is. I reset the CMOS by unplugging the red/white cable from the MB.

However, I'm concerned that maybe the actual battery is going bad. I don't see how to remove it/open the plastic mount to replace it. I couldn't find a Youtube covering this particular battery replacement like I did for the reset. Can someone explain how to do this and/or maybe a video? Thanks.

The MB is about two/three years old and I can't find the model number.

SSD screw help please

Hello,

I got this pc from someone second hand so I have no manual or extra screws. I am trying to install a second ssd for more storage but I cannot find the right screws and to be honest I dont know how to do it. My motherboard is the Asrock b360m xtreme. My ssd only goes to the first gold hole (its small). Do i just put the screw straight into the gold part? Do I need a standoff?

First I bought these screws that did not fit:

https://a.co/d/09ObmaAC

Then I thought I needed a standoff so I bought these which also did not fit:

https://a.co/d/01CD4CYc

I have attached a picture of my motherboard, the gold rings I am talking about, and the ssd I have. Can someone please link screws that work and describe the process to me. Also, do I put my ssd in the left or right slot? I would really appreciate it, thanks.

Extremely slow POST and UEFI on B650M and 9800X3D

Hi all,

So I honestly think it's my turn to live first hand through the AM5 drama. But my situation seems to be a little bit more slow burning.

Right now, since a week, my current issues consist of:

  • Often terribly long POST times. Some are faster than others.
  • Occasionally managed to boot into an incredibly laggy UEFI.
  • Sometimes multiple boots/loops are required to boot into the OS.
  • Due to the extremely laggy UEFI, I strongly suspect it's not a memory training thing.
  • Once booted into the OS, everything runs fine.

My hardware list:

  • MB: Asrock B650M-HDV/m.2
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • GPU: Asus Prime Gaming Radeon RX 9070 XT
  • RAM: G.Skill Flare X5 F5-6000J3038F16GX2-FX5

I bought the Mobo and CPU back in April of 2025 as a packaged deal. It came with BIOS version 3.20 preflashed and preinstalled on the Motherboard. I do run EXPO 6000. I do not, nor have I ever overclocked/undervolt anything.

I found out about the Asrock/AM5 issues in May that same year. VSOC always looked stable in HWMonitor/HWInfo64. I've never had any random shutdowns. Since I found out I decided to avoid sleeping/hibernating the PC, and just shut it down at the end of every day.

I've upgraded to the newer BIOS versions as they came out. Currently I'm on version 4.10.

The PC has been running Windows 11 for the majority of its lifetime, but since Februari this year, I have completely switched over to single boot Linux Bazzite, and it has always felt stable.

Not a single mid-OS, mid-Gaming, mid-Idling crash or reboot has occurred so far. Neither on Windows nor on Bazzite.

I'm quite new to Linux and have not figured out how to read VSOC yet, but due to the slow boot times, I've opted for the time being to keep the PC switched on indefinitely. It's been very stable running for over a week now.

Now I have a couple of questions.

  1. Is there anything I can do to avoid the long POST times? i.e. reset bios and leave EXPO disabled?
  2. Is it worth trying to flash to BIOS version 4.21, which came out at the end of April this year, just before my problems started to occur.
  3. In the worst case scenario, living in the Netherlands, does an RMA need to be done via the retailer and not directly through AMD? And yes, I am strongly considering switching away from Asrock.
  4. Any other comments or tips? I've been seeing a lot of slow UEFI complaints recently on this subreddit, even with Mobo/CPU combos that aren't the usual AM5 culprits.

p.s. switch to Linux. It's friggin' amazing.

Steam Machine's curious newcomer's FAQ -//- What is it? What can it do? What *can't* it do?

Availability //

- how much?

haha, that's the [insert Steam Machine price here] [insert currency here] question my friend!

- when?

Lemme look into my crystal ball 👉🔮

Performance //

- what should I expect?

Short version -- "horsepower"-wise, expect a PS5.

Long version -- Steam Machine - a comprehensive hardware breakdown (section 2 & 3)

Hardware //

- what exactly is under the hood?

Short version -- AMD-issued laptop-grade parts & other laptop standardized components, you can only change the RAM (laptop 'SODIMM' DDR5) & storage (NVMe M.2)

Long version -- Steam Machine - a comprehensive hardware breakdown (section 1)

Note : the Steam Machine has NOT been designed to be a powerhouse, it's goal is to allow players the most straightforward access to gaming technologically achievable AND (although Valve didn't say it outloud) designate a hardware target for game studios to hit as the least powerful PC they should optimize for-- the very same way the SteamDeck became an incentive for many to optimize a game to run on it because of the huge market On-The-Go gaming became because of it.

- can I use mouse/keyboard?

It's a PC so yes, it can handle multiple control methods seamlessly, you can switch from M/KB to controller whenever and edit control schemes however you want via Steam Input

Software //

- what can I expect to run?

Short version -- Everything a SteamDeck can launch, it's running SteamOS too

Long version -- it's a PC (the Deck too but that's a whole other rambling) so everything a PC can BUT, _out of the box_, it's not your regular computer running Windows (even though you could install it instead if you wanted), _SteamOS is based on Linux_, so here's in details what you should expect :

  • not 100% of all games ever are guaranteed to run on Linux: a huge share of them straight up do not have a Linux version, but we can still play on Linux thanks to a little thing called WINE, that Valve picked up, made their version (doing that is commonly called a "fork") optimized for gaming they called Proton, which takes the Windows version of games, operate some software-level black magic that you don't really need to care about and through this, lets you run games on Linux! BUT, as software is never perfect, there is obviously some incompatibilities that either won't let you launch a game at all or some quirks causing issues at various levels of your gaming experience // Check out ProtonDB to check the playability of games on Linux via a rating system & user reviews that often includes community fixes where necessary + Games will have a SteamDeck/SteamOS compatibility rating on their store pages for your convenience! This rating is dependent on Valve testing so it may take longer to show there than on ProtonDB but it's also a form of official validation
  • no games with kernel-level anti-cheat, unless explicitly stated by the game studio-- that includes CoD games (since at least 2019), Battlefield games (since at least BF2042), Escape From Tarkov (sortof), Destiny 2, Marathon... // Check out AreWeAntiCheatYet for the full up-to-date list of games with Linux-enabled anti-cheats (and obviously those that don't too)
  • software available under the form of a "Flatpak"-- Linux allows you to install whatever you want but since it's also just as easy to just f**k it up and botch the system, Valve set it up to be immutable: you can't modify it without switching off the safety on it (you can do whatever you want but if you want it to stay stable and retain official support, leave that as is) However, you can install software on it the same way you install apps from the app store on your phone: it goes for browsers, office software, creative software, etc... if there's a Flatpak version of it, you can install it via "Discover" (the "app store" that ships with it) // Check out AlternativeTo (I've already applied the "Flatpak" filter on that link) to parse through software you're likely to find in Discover to install.
  • Not all softwares you know and are familiar with on Windows have a Flatpak version, let alone a Linux build-- if you really need something from Windows, not all hope is lost: through the same methods Valve made the Deck & now the Machine/Frame run Windows-only games, there exist ways to run Windows software but this is not a guarantee either, Linux compatibility went a loooooong way over the years, non-game software is quite volatile so while new support is introduced regularly, subvert your expectations, look up if something can be run and how well it will run // Check out Bottles or this video guide from their docs to learn the basics
  • There's use cases where megacorps either don't see the point of supporting Linux or straight up don't play nice intentionally (whether or not reasons behind are legitimate may vary) such as streaming services for DRM (aka content protection) reasons, mostly niche stuff (such as Blu-Ray playing & Dolby 7.1-- from what I heard) but can be inconvenient at time when you encounter those...

- can I mod my games?

It's... hit or miss. Most of the answer around this will be available here

- can it run VR?

While the Steam Frame has been designed to run as a standalone device, Valve has of course also worked on PCVR tandem between the two, it will absolutely work for VR regardless of the VR brand, as long as the headset supports Steam Link/SteamVR or the manufacturer's streamer app has a SteamOS/Linux compatible version.

Alternative //

- can I make my own Steam Machine?

Short version -- Of course, you absolutely can, I made my own, a bunch of others did too!
HOWEVER: SteamOS offers no Nvidia GPU support, unless you have literally anything else, it won't work. // Doesn't stop you from the next best options -both of which have Nvidia support- like Bazzite (Deck/Machine-like experience) or CachyOS (PC-like experience) (there's other flavors of Linux but the most popular & reliable for gaming are those two)

Long version -- The GeekCube // a DIY "we have GabeCube at home" project (section 1)

Other //

- my question/worries/expectations are not answered by the above!

reply down here, I'll try to convince the mods to pin this at the top of the sub as I update this post with more answers further down the line!

ASRock RMA

ASRock x870e nova/9800x3d failure you know the drill. I submitted an RMA request and support request through the mega thread link 3 weeks ago, still haven't heard back. AMD confirmed my RMA, and replaced my processor in a week.

I really want to like this board but it seems like ASrock is drowning...My buddy lost his 9800x3d in his Asus x870e-e board and they responded immediately and cross shipped him a motherboard(deposit required) Granted it took a bit to finalize but I've never been ghosted by an RMA department before.
