Saw this in a neighborhood I drove through, it sticks out like a sore thumb and I had to stop to take a picture. From my perspective there was no apparent reason for the vertical meander, it just looks comically mid-designed and installed.

I haven’t done any fencing work but I’m curious if anyone can come up with a possible reason for this. I would not be able to stand looking at this on my property every day!

I was thinking at first that it was a hyperbola, i know my other conic sections pretty well but have struggled with hyperbolic intuition.

On further reflection, I am thinking it is a different type of curve altogether since it would be caused by the intersection of two cones rather than one cone and one plane.

What is this intersection curve called?
