Old, but cheaper than P Bandai

I generally don’t like building the same kit or something very close to it twice, so it’s a good excuse to use old kits. Also have the Ez8 from this series (Have that, Ground Type and Gouf Custom as modern HGs too, so it’s mainly the Sniper and Flight Type I was after here).

So, Grails:

This was love at first sight in the Old section of dalong.net.
I missed an opportunity a few years ago to get a cheap one but luckily another blue label reprint popped up at a not-too-appalling markup.

The old 1/60 is a bit too odd for my tastes, but this is spot on. Hopefully by the time I get to this I’ll have developed some modification skills working on the 1/100’s quirky core. There’s some lights and wires to contend with here.

What’s cooking this weekend?

My long suffering little Ideon is finally turning red.

I thought I’d try lightest colours first (white, yellow) ending with darkest so that I can avoid masking quite so much (all the greys and blues can go over the red). No doubt some red will sneak onto the white strips and need retouching.

Unfortunately my joint modification skills, aren’t. So this guy is one glued floppy piece with little safe to grip. I have to put him in curious and compromising positions just to get access to all the surfaces.

This phone photo doesn’t really capture the orangey-red I’m going for. Nor does spraying thin red pigment over grey primer. Lots of layers, and lots of waiting for acrylic to dry.

Apparently it’s Gramps Day? Here’s Gramps ‘90 (WIP)

The one whose mould is a museum piece. First use of ‘HG’ branding.

It has the multi-colour parts and primitive RG-like inner frame joints. Unfortunately neither techniques work very well so it’s no surprise this approach was largely shelved for years. There’s a bit of flexibility in the joints for the time but it’s minimal.

The Core Fighter does indeed fold into the torso.

Interestingly the plastic was a little softer than expected and nub cleanup was surprisingly simple (PS plastic should get harder and more brittle with age).

I’ll be doing the full paint and spa treatment on this guy as he needs all the help he can get. Might even sculpt him a proper crotch (it’s completely featureless under that sticker and yet Bandai had the cheek to use box photos of a modified model with a full um protrusion).

There are other markings but I doubt 35 year old stickers will stick for long.
