Hot take: it’s time to shut down long wharf

I love the idea of long wharf food truck stalls. I think it’s great that there is a place that provides stable business to the food trucks and that people have access to a pretty nice waterfront park with nearby wetlands.

I think that the reality of long wharf food trucks does not match the theory.

  1. The place has devolved into an open air dump. It’s not just the overflowing trash cans. The benches look like people just eat and get up as if a waiter or busboy is going to clear the table for them. The parking lot by the ice cream shop is full of empty beer cases and bottles. All of this garbage goes straight into the sound.
  2. The place is frequently taken over by car and motorcycle groups. It’s essentially one of the main staging areas for people to gather and get ready to cruise around downtown doing wheelies and making noise. It’s also a gathering area for boom cars that want to broadcast their shitty music across the water to east haven. If the city cared at all about noise ordinances, it would intervene in these meetups before they go downtown to ruin everyone’s night.

What should have been a nice public area has become inundated with groups that do not respect the space and abandoned by city authorities. The environmental impact alone should be enough. I know that there are plans to revitalize the area, but I don’t know if the local environment can afford to wait.
