XNS + I2P = Unstoppable Freedom

XNS is the ultimate solution to the traditional DNS which is in control of various legal organizations. Blockchain is the solution to store immutable data. XNS doesn't invent yet another blockchain, it is built on Monero in an elegant way, and aims to be as reliable as Monero is.

Currently XNS can be used as a DNS alternative for I2P and Tor. This screenshot demonstrates an email from one XNS name to another over I2P.

OpenAlias on XNS

OpenAlias now no longer depends on central DNS servers, ICANN or TLD organizations. No need for DNSSEC. It doesn't even depend on Namecoin or Handshake that has its own token, consensus, blockchain, complexity. But only Monero, using the XNS protocol. XNS can be best understood as ENS of Monero. It has one Ed25519 key that can be used for I2P and Tor using its dedicated resolver. In this screenshot it is xns-resolver resolving .xns domains to I2P destinations, DNS calls are delegated to the target destination's authoritative DNS server.

That means now you can receive Monero to a memorable address like er.xns, only in your control.

This is only one of the many use cases for XNS, it is the cypherpunk alternative to centralized DNS, as I2P is the alternative to IP and Monero is the alternative to fiat. Learn more about XNS on https://xns.rocks

An alternative name system for I2P: XNS

XNS is the eXile Name System.
It makes Monero the only source of truth.
Each XNS name is a result of a 0.01 XMR burn transaction with the desired name and owner public Ed25519 key.

Now it can be used as the name system of I2P.

Why would you use it all of a sudden? Because currently, there is no safe names in I2P. Unless you use direct b32.i2p addresses, which are not human memorable.

What's wrong with .i2p addresses? They are just entries on your own machine and on jump services. You have to trust those jump services if you share your .i2p address with others and expect reliability. Think of it as .local/.lan names your network router resolves.

While with XNS, once you claim a XNS name, as long as Monero stands, your name will be yours and no one can take it from you.

XNS is made for the Internet of free people. I believe I2P is the only reliable way.

XNS: eXile Name System

Let me introduce XNS, the eXile Name System.

XNS is a name system built directly on Monero. It has no separate blockchain, token, premine, treasury, validators or governance system. Monero is its history, clock and only source of truth.

The Internet gave people the ability to publish and operate their own services, but the names through which those services are reached are still rented from institutions. You may own the server and every byte on it, while a registrar or platform retains the power to suspend, redirect or seize the name attached to your work.

XNS is an attempt to enfree names.

An XNS name belongs to an Ed25519 public key. A claim is an ordinary Monero transaction sent to a protocol-defined burn wallet. The transaction amount determines the lifetime of the name, while tx_extra contains the name and owner public key directly.

The protocol wallet has a valid private view key, allowing its incoming transactions to be discovered, but its spend public key is the order-2 Edwards point (0, -1). There is no valid private spend key behind it. XMR sent there cannot be recovered by anyone.

One year costs 0.01 XMR, defined as 262800 Monero blocks.

An XNS indeXer scans the protocol wallet and deterministically reconstructs the registry from Monero. Its database is only a cache. It can be deleted and rebuilt from the chain. Anyone can run an indeXer, and applications are expected to let users choose which one they use.

XNS has no update or transfer operation. If a name is active, only another claim using the same owner key can renew it. A different owner cannot replace it. When the name expires, it becomes free again.

The absence of transfers is deliberate. Selling a cryptographic identity means selling a private key, but the buyer can never know that the seller did not retain a copy. Without trustworthy transfers, there is no trustworthy resale market, which removes the practical reason to collect names for resale.

XNS is now live on mainnet and stagenet. The protocol, implementation and documentation are public, and I would appreciate review from the community.
