The In-Laws [1979]

The In-Laws [1979]

My dad (born in '61) strongly recommended this one as it was one of his favorites growing up. Absolutely hilarious. Arkin and Falk two hander is just perfection, we don't get this type of subtle humor or performances like these anymore. There are many hugely absurd laughs, but the smaller moments between the two (and especially the arc of Falk chipping away at Arkin's cold shoulder) might be the funniest nuggets in this film. It clearly laid the groundwork for future comedies like The Naked Gun. I can't get "serpentine!" out of my head, that sequence was just too funny. Also Falk off rip talking about how he encountered huge flies on his expedition. Yearning to somehow write or perform in something as comedically dense and tight as this! I loved the lengths this went to, and how Arkin is eventually just along for the ride (much like the viewer) with Falk. Desperately wish they were both with us, or at least that I appreciated their performances more when they were still around. Also huge shoutout to James Hong, I also saw him recently as a butler in Chinatown. What a magnificent career he's had.

One of the greatest scenes in TV

This whole sequence just washed over me like it did Don, absolutely perfect. Made me cry. So cool to hear Matthew Weiner say this was one of his favorite moments because it was finally the opportunity for Robert Morse to sing (broadway legend)

Which Mad Men character understood the future better than everyone else?

Pete and Peggy were both relatively progressive for the time, who do you think got it right? Maybe Bert with his eulogy-sentence about Ida?

Neighbors might be stealing my medication

Hi everyone, sharing a cautionary tale. Be careful when relying on your neighbors to grab the mail for you. I live on the first floor of a shared house. We never got a mail key and our landlord is saying it would be almost 200$ to get our lock fixed. A family lives in the basement below me and they receive pretty much all the packages that can't fit in our mailbox (that we can't even get into). Anyway, I got my medication shipped in from out of state and didn't receive it for months, until last week it mysteriously appeared outside of my door, already opened. The bottle of medication was still in there but completely empty. Couple days after and the mom and dad are going through the mail together in broad daylight on our front steps, i pass them to get in and they hand me my mail. Was kinda baffled, especially after my medication package moment. They've given my mail to me before and it was fine, so I trusted that they weren't doing anything. No valuables in those letters though, and I also never received a check I shouldve gotten for a trial shift at a restaurant. Not entirely sure what I should do.

Went to a preview of Billy Crystal's one man show yesterday! Called "860"

What an interesting experience. I went with a pal for free through his university, such an interesting show. It mainly revolves around losing his house in the Pasadena fires, "860" was the house number. He's as funny and charming as ever, truly. Really paints a picture of how the things we own actually truly are part of who we are as humans, and he tragically lost so much. Might be structurally clumsy at parts and a weeee tone deaf, but he really makes a set of it. Also was super open to discussion afterward, which was nice and unexpected.

F Scott Fitzgerald short stories - other stories from the 20s?

Hello! I've been chomping through this amazing collection of fitzgerald short stories to get a better classical foundation for my writing. Love May Day, Diamond as Big as the Ritz, he can do no wrong in my eyes. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations of stories from that era told in the first perspective? From what I've gleamed the only real first person tale is great gatsby...
