A remembrance to Eva Gabor on the anniversary of her passing (July 4th, 1995), here as Lorraine Quarl in THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS (1954). A little trivia, Eva Gabor was the first person to appear on TCM Remembers, in the memorial reel for 1995

TCM website won’t click through cable provider to activate streaming

Noticed it first last night, still happening today. The normal screen with the long code pops up on the TV, we open the website on a phone or a laptop and enter the code, then it presents the usual 6 or so cable providers… and when you click on one (any one) nothing happens.

This happening to anyone else? Any idea how to tell TCM their website needs help?

Happy Birthday Olivia de Havilland!! 🎂🥳 Name Your Favorite Film.

She won 2 Best Actress Oscars (for To Each His Own and The Heiress) and lived to be 104 years old. She’s best remembered for playing Scarlett O’Hara’s sister Melanie Hamilton in Gone With the Wind and for successfully suing her studio, Warner Brothers, to end an unfair contract.

Here are links to her Wikipedia bio and the lawsuit dispute:

Talking Pictures podcast, Ben interviews Ron Howard

Ben interviews Ron Howard for his Talking Pictures podcast. Good conversation between the two including some stories that would appeal to classic movie fans: Andy Griffith in A Face in the Crowd, working with John Wayne, and directing Bette Davis. You could tell the two enjoyed talking to each other. Ben said at the end that he'd love to have Howard on again because he still had a list of topics he didn't get to.

"Oscar-winning director Ron Howard tells host Ben Mankiewicz that he feared being “branded” a supernatural comedy director following the success of “Splash” and “Cocoon.” After tapping guidance from his “Happy Days” boss, Garry Marshall, and insight from Frank Capra’s biography, Howard set forth to explore the medium of film in all its genres as a director. He tells Ben about being mesmerized by “Bonnie and Clyde” and “The Graduate” and learning how to work with stars when acting in “The Shootist” with John Wayne directed by Don Siegel. Ron Howard’s Super 8 answers run the gamut from nods to “Project Hail Mary.” and “Eastern Promises,” to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” and “Blazing Saddles.”

An "Essential" Question

I've been watching TCM for twenty years and it has greatly contributed to my academic career in film studies. I'm currently making a video essay about Brad Bird, and I wondered if anyone still had a recording of him discussing The Music Man with Ben when he hosted The Essentials in 2020? I found several of the other intros on YouTube but not that one. Many thanks!

WatchTCM

I’m switching from Sling to DirecTV. So l finally be able to use the app.

To save me recordings everything, as I had to on Sling.

Does all of TCM appear on WatchTCM? How long after being shown, does the movie appear on the app?

The History Of Some Like It Hot

We continue our exploration of Billy Wilder's career, one movie at a time, with what some call the greatest comedy ever made. It has Lemmon and Curtis in drag, it marks the start of the Iz Diamond era, and there's lots (and lots) of Marilyn Monroe drama.

Help Identifying Movie Icons

At the end of a studio tour, I picked up this TCM shirt on clearance from the Warner Brothers studio shop. I've been able to identify some of the logos confidently but there's also several I'm not sure on - for example the sled on the bottom middle I'm sure is Rosebud for Citizen Kane, but then the snowglobe next to it also is Citizen Kane? Some symbols are vague and seem like they could be more of an "in general" symbol than a specific film (Cowboy Boot for Westerns? Bowler Hat for Charlie Chaplan? Magnifying glass for Mysteries?)

Let me know if any of you have guesses to help me fill in the gaps, or if you think I got something wrong!

My guesses so far:

Lips - Victor/Victoria?

Phone - Dial M for Murder?

Vespa - Roman Holiday

Scottie Dog or possibly Terrier - Greyfriars Bobby?

Magnifying Glass -

Bell - For Whom the Bell Tolls?

Heart Sunglasses - Lolita

Cowby Boot -

Cocktail Shaker - 007 / James Bond ?

Empire State Building - King Kong

Falling Body - Vertigo?

Plane - North by Northwest

Martini - The Thin Man?

Bowler Hat -

Cactus -

Umbrella -

Car -

Bird Statue/Maltese Falcon - Maltese Falcon

Sled - Rosebud for Citizen Kane

Snowglobe - Citizen Kane? Maaaaybe Heidi?

UPDATED LIST

Lips - Rocky Horror? Victor/Victoria? Marilyn Monroe?

Phone - Dial M for Murder? Sorry Wrong Number?

Vespa - Roman Holiday

Scottie Dog - McTavish for Philo Vance movies? Asta for Thin Man series? Toto for Wizard of Oz?

Magnifying Glass - Sherlock Holmes series with Basil Rathbone (1939-1946)

Bell - For Whom the Bell Tolls? Bell Book and Candle? Hunchback of Notre Dame?

Heart Sunglasses - Lolita

Cowboy Boot - John Wayne? Westerns? Midnight Cowboy? Urban Cowboy? They Died with their Boots On?

Cocktail Shaker - 007 / James Bond ? Thin Man?

Empire State Building - King Kong? An Affair to Remember?

Plane - North by Northwest

For those of you who have met the 5 main TCM hosts, any guesses on their heights?

Just wondering because some say that people from tv/film often appear shorter in person.
