This cute little girl grow up to become a beloved Hollywood dancer, singer, and actress. She won an Oscar for her compelling portrayal of a young unmarried pregnant woman in the film Kitty Foyle.

Although a glamour and style icon of the screen, she was a tomboy who felt most at home far away from the camera on her farm in Oregon (as shown in the 3rd picture).

This legendary, beloved star and friend of TCM celebrates her 102nd birthday on Independence Day. I’m so grateful to TCM for sharing her films with millions of fans around the world.

She won 2 Best Actress Oscars (for To Each His Own and The Heiress) and lived to be 104 years old. She’s best remembered for playing Scarlett O’Hara’s sister Melanie Hamilton in Gone With the Wind and for successfully suing her studio, Warner Brothers, to end an unfair contract.
