Dark Harvest Mel

I’m now 1000 LP playing Mel APC, and I strongly recommend Dark Harvest as her best rune for bot lane.

Comet is still decent, especially into engage supports where you’re able to consistently poke out the ADC. But into enchanters, I find it has way less value since they can usually just outsustain your poke.

Dark Harvest into enchanters is op

Dark Harvest feels way better for snowballing and gives Mel an insanely strong mid game. It’s also much easier to stack in bot lane since you have two targets to proc it on.

My current core is:

Luden’s → Shadowflame → Lich Bane

And yes, Lich Bane is a sleeper item. I’ve been having a lot of success with it as my third item.

For % pen, I usually prefer Cryptbloom.

Obviously, play her however you want, but IMO Mel feels much better when you treat her as a stat-check burst mage rather than focusing heavily on CDR. You don’t need to constantly throw out spells just because they’re available.

Be patient with your abilities and look for high-value rotations. You’re playing bot lane, you have a support who can provide setup for you.

DH + full burst Mel APC has been by far my favorite way to play her.

Dark Harvest APC Mel Build (Grandmaster Peak)

Hey everyone. I peaked Grandmaster this season while playing a majority of my games on Mel APC, and after a lot of testing I wanted to share the setup I've had the most success with.

I am the Rank 1 Mel on League of Graphs ( which doesn't mean anything ), but I do have the stats to back up my build

I've never really been sold on the standard Sorcery/Comet pages on the reworked Mel. As I've climbed, I feel like Arcane Comet loses a lot of value against better players. Mel's primary poke pattern (Q) doesn't have any built-in crowd control, so good opponents will sidestep Comet fairly consistently. It can still perform well into certain matchups, but I don't think it's as reliable as many people make it out to be.

Instead, I've been running Dark Harvest, which rewards a much more aggressive playstyle focused on snowballing fights and deleting squishy champions. Once you get ahead, your burst becomes significantly more threatening, and the rune scales naturally with the way I think Mel wants to teamfight.

Her Ludens Shadowflame build has been popular recently, but I still see haste builds and it's always with comet.

This isn't meant to say Comet is bad, it's simply the setup that's consistently given me the best results in high MMR. I'll explain my rune choices, itemization, and how I play around Dark Harvest below.

Why Dark Harvest?

The biggest reason I run Dark Harvest is how naturally it synergizes with Mel's kit. Your Q and E apply multiple damage ticks, making Dark Harvest extremely consistent at proccing once an enemy reaches the execute threshold. Combined with Shadowflame, it creates a very reliable burst window that lets you finish off low-health targets before they have a chance to escape.

Against squishy champions, especially ADCs and enchanter supports you'll be surprised how quickly they disappear once you reach your core items.

Another advantage of playing Mel bot is that you're laning into two champions instead of one, giving you far more opportunities to stack Dark Harvest throughout the game. Those extra stacks add up quickly and let you snowball into a carry threat, which feels especially strong in the current mage bot lane meta. You'll also tilt the enemy ADC and support if you have a good reflect matchup.

Why Treasure Hunter instead of Ultimate Hunter?

I value Treasure Hunter much more than Ultimate Hunter because Mel's biggest power spikes come from reaching her AP items as quickly as possible.

The extra gold accelerates your Luden's and Shadowflame timings, allowing you to start one-shotting squishy champions much earlier. Since Mel can reliably secure kills with her basic abilities alongside a support, I don't find Ultimate Hunter necessary. I'd rather have the earlier item spikes that help me take over the game.

Why Precision over Sorcery?

I also believe Presence of Mind + Cut Down provides more value than a Sorcery secondary.

Presence of Mind solves Mel's mana issues in the moments that actually matter,, extended skirmishes and teamfights. As enemies start dying, the mana restoration lets you keep casting and get additional spell rotations off without needing to invest manaflow.

Cut Down also contributes meaningful damage toward pushing enemies into Dark Harvest's execute threshold. That extra damage often ends up being the difference between forcing a Flash and actually securing the kill.

Because this build is centered around high AP burst rather than Ability Haste stacking, you're using fewer spell casts to kill your targets. So you shouldn't run out of mana nearly as fast.

Why Cryptbloom over Void Staff?

I almost always prefer Cryptbloom over Void Staff.

By the time you're buying your % magic penetration item, your job isn't to maximize damage against squishy champions,, you should already be one-shotting them.

Cryptbloom is also one of the few sources of Ability Haste in this build. Since you're not stacking haste elsewhere, each point is much more valuable and isn't heavily affected by diminishing returns.
