If you have a 3D printer, here’s a clever way to save a lot of white ink when creating raised or textured prints.
Here’s Cameron’s workflow:
- First, generate a 2.5D depth map of your image using an AI tool like ChatGPT or Gemini
- Example prompt: “Create me a 2.5D depth map of this image with a black background”
- Next, convert the depth map into a 3D model (STL) using an image-to-STL tool such as:
- Then, use a 3D printer to print the model, preferably with white filament
- You can try printing it flat or on edge with brim supports
- Finally, print the original image onto the 3D model using flat print mode
By building the raised structure with filament first, you can reduce the amount of white ink needed while still achieving a dimensional result.

If you're printing nail designs with a raised effect, Hard White Ink may give better results than Flexible White Ink.
Here are Janie’s tips:
- Wear gloves to avoid hand oils affecting adhesion
- Clean nails with 91% isopropyl alcohol, then apply Adhesive Promoter
- Start with a full-color box across all nails to make sure every part of the nail is covered and to help create a jig for later sets
- Recommended settings:
- White: 3 (when using white as a base)
- Design: Flat Raised
- Raised height: 0.30 mm
- From Janie’s testing, Hard Ink works better for raised nail designs
- Flexible raised designs caused wrinkling in the CMYK
- Flexible White Ink base looked too translucent and needed too many coats to become opaque
- After printing, apply a gel top coat and cure under UV light
Janie also shared that a white and blue nail set printed as a flat design with Hard White Base has been worn for 5 days with no issues.
