[Showoff Saturday] Cyberspace.online

Over at Cyberspace.online we just hit 12k users. I've been building this little platform for a little over 9 months now. Grass-roots ad-free anti-corporate social network... inspired by growing up with computers during the 90s hacker days. Lots of genuinely cool and interesting people on there now, and has a strict anti-troll mod policy.

The web version is incredibly customisable with custom themes, pixel fonts, etc. including the styles of 80s amber VT-terminals, Matrix green, and Commodore 64.

It's got an API and some open source clients to it for the terminal, called TUIs, and it's also got two alternative designs for it. One called Cyberspace Desktop (desktop.cyberspace.online) that looks like a retro desktop environment, with a full window manager, etc.

The latest addition is called Cyberspace Terminal (cyberspace.online/terminal) looks like a retro command line from the 80s, with a grungy realistic CRT emulation.

Feel free to use a throw-away email. No verification needed. I don't track any personal user info, not even IPs.

Let's bring back the friendly internet of the 90s when people were nice to each other :)

[OC] Cyberspace Terminal

While this system is just something that runs on a *nix cloud and in your own browser, I think it quite literally might be classified as UNIX PORN :)

Over at Cyberspace.online we just hit 12k users. I've been building this little platform for a little over 9 months now. Grass-roots ad-free anti-corporate web, inspired by growing up with computers during the 90s hacker days. Lots of genuinely cool and interesting people on there now, and has a strict anti-troll mod policy.

The latest thing I made on there is called Terminal. It's a simulation of a UNIX-style OS running in your browser, projected through this lovely grungy CRT emulation, complete with hacker movie bleeps and bloops and 2400 baud lag. I love how it feels. Quite proud of it if I may say so :)

Users can write and share their own programs in it! You can also customise it and run it in an 80s library amber colour scheme.

PS. Be sure to try the easter egg: sudo rm -rf /

Note: These are screenshots of me running cyberspace.online/terminal in full screen mode in Brave Browser. Also note, you can sign up with a made up email. Verification NOT needed. I collect no real user data, not even IPs.

I made a programmable virtual OS (and social network) that feels like a crunky 80s terminal :)

The latest thing I made on there is called Terminal. It's like a miniature UNIX-style OS running in your browser, projected through this lovely grungy CRT emulation, complete with hacker movie bleeps and bloops. I love how it feels. Quite proud of it if I may say so :)

So far it allows you to use the chat rooms (cIRC) and read/reply on the news feed. Will add more features later. I also made it possible to write your own programs on it. One guy (landon) managed to run his Apple-1 emulator on it (look ma I put a computer inside a computer inside a computer), and another person (tangelic) wrote a vector-style FPS and a multiplayer poker game in the first day! Myself, I managed to, naturally, run DOOM on it :)

If you don't quite jive with a "virtual OS" running in your browser, you can still connect to Cyberspace proper and use most of its features over either a CLI or one of several open source TUIs (unremarkablegarden/cyberspace-opentuiArmadilloBrillo/cyber-tui).

You only need a verified email if you want API/TUI access, so feel free to come say hi even with just a throwaway/made up email. There's no tracking, not even IPs, and you don't need to dox yourself.

Hope you like it! Peace.

Obligatory note: This software's code is partially AI-generated. It's mainly human made, fully human designed. I strongly believe it's not "slop". There are no AI 'features' on the site. There's a strict anti-bot firewall to prevent non-human content. There are plenty of thoughtful discussions on the platform itself about the pros and cons of development in the AI era.

Similarities: You could say the social aspect of it is similar to late.sh (which I love, but is actually younger than this), and the project Cool Retro Term.

Affiliation with "paid things": I made this thing. It's free to use. But it's supported by grass-roots donations from the users.

Cyberspace — a "social operating system" for your cyberDeck

Cyberspace.online — Many of us on this sub are already long-term members. Last time I posted here to say hey and invite any new users was 4 months ago. Anyhow, for the last nine months I've been building this anti-corporate grass-roots social network.

We're almost 12k users now. We're mostly a bunch of hackers, Linux users, DIY-enthusiasts and artists. Lots of really smart and cool people. One of our mods even designs, produces and sells her own CyberDecks!

There's a timeline feed, DMs called C-Mail, chat rooms called cIRC, a jukebox, a Tron-style 3D multiplayer game (with DMT) called The Grid, an ASCII graffiti wall, and lots of other fun stuff to explore. Naturally there are keyboard shortcuts for everything (yes, including VIM bindings).

I've made an API for it, so you can use one of the community's open source TUI's, or roll your own client. APIOfficial TUIRagnar's TUI — There's also a web client called Cyberspace Desktop inspired by the old Xerox GUI.

The web version is incredibly customisable with custom themes, pixel fonts, etc. including the styles of 80s amber VT-terminals, Matrix green, 90s hacker, and C64.

Feel free to use a throw-away email. It's only necessary to verify to use it over API.

Let's bring back the friendly internet of the 90s when people were nice to each other :)

THE GRID — a new interactive 3D world inside Cyberspace

Many of you are already members of cyberspace.online — the anti-brainrot cyberpunk-inspired grass-roots social network.

We recently premiered the alpha of a real-time multiplayer 3D vector world called THE GRID. Right now you can chat, play tag and flip gravity. Drawing inspiration from Gibson's Sprawl :)

Currently working on support for Quake levels which users can make with the open-source TrenchBroom level editor.

Would love to hear what you think it could become. Drop ideas below.

No email verification needed. Sign up with anything and come check it out.

PS. You can change the colour of the wireframes with custom and user themes!

[Showoff Saturday] Retro desktop environment for for my social network Cyberspace

Some of you might have seen ᑕ¥βєяรקค¢є before. "Social media de-imagined."

A grass-roots social network without AI, Videos, Algorithms, Suggestions, Tracking or Ads. We're only 11k users so far but it's a wonderful little corner of the internet, without trolls or bots. The main site has more of a terminal aesthetic and works more like a regular web app.

I'm currently working on Cyberspace Desktop. Inspired by Mac OS 6 on the Mac Classic, Lisa, as well as early Linux and UNIX desktops. It has the basic News feed, IRC-style chat rooms, and DMs (called C-Mail) from the main site.

I'm planning on porting most if not all of the functionality over. You can also try some of the themes. You can use different colours and cursors, but later I want to also offer different icon sets, window styles, menus and task bars.

I've also made an API for it, with the community currently working on open-source CLI and TUI clients for the platform.

Note that you have to sign up on the main site before you can log in on the Desktop version. It's free and you can use a throw-away email (no verification needed).

Would love to know what you think :)

r/cyberDeck was the first place I ever posted a link to cyberspace.online and the community received it very warmly (◕‿◕✿)

It's a grass-roots social media platform that takes inspiration from the 90s and hacker culture. No AI, no video, no ads, no algorithm, no crypto, etc.

Now six months have passed, and it's evolved so much! We're almost 10k users now. Since then I've added lots of fun new features, including:

  • Jukebox
  • Guilds with forums and chat rooms
  • Public blog (sharable posts visible to people not logged in or without accounts)
  • Map & Globe
  • VIM keyboard navigation
  • Web app support ("Add to home screen")
  • Fortune cookies & tarot deck
  • /slash commands in the chat rooms
  • Image uploading/hosting
  • Search
  • Wiki
  • Webring
  • API (there are two open-source TUI's and one CLI already!)
  • RSS for both the main feed and user feeds
  • Lots of new themes and custom theming options

This in addition to features we had already like IRC-style chat rooms, DM's called C-Mail, feeds, entries, replies, private notes, topics, profiles, user directory, pokes (lol), follow/mute/block/etc.

We are a community of wonderful nerds from all over the world, sharing thoughts and ideas on all kinds of topics. Hackers, modders, Linux users, cyberdeckers, 3D printers, DIYers, cyberpunks, gamers, philosophers, musicians and artists.

If you haven't already maybe come take a look and say hi?
