Venus in Furs. (1970)

Venus in Furs. (1970)

A jazz trumpeter finds the body of a fur coat clad woman washed up on a beach in Istanbul. Later on while in Rio de Janeiro, he has encounters with who he swears is the same woman, which soon becomes an obsession.

A surreal giallo that's a ghost story as well. The jazz soundtrack and psychedelic effects add to the mood and atmosphere.

Planet of Dinosaurs. (1977)

The story of a spaceship that crashes on an uncharted planet. The survivors find it habitual and similar to Earth, but millions of years behind in the development of life.

They must find a way to survive the hostile environment and the threat of dinosaurs.

Most of the budget was spent on special effects, which included an award-winning collection of stop-motion dinosaurs.

If you're a fan of stop-motion films, I recommend it for the dinosaurs.

El Santo: The Fist of Death. (1982)

In the Far East, the star of great power is stolen by an evil priestess. In her thirst for power, she kidnaps the jungle girl who was sent by the gods, to be used as a human sacrifice. Only Santo, the masked man of silver, can save the day.

*Sigh...* So much potential wasted. Instead of all out action and thrills, we get Santo and his sidekicks traipsing through the jungle, only to have ten minutes of Santo fighting the go-go dancing evil high priestess and her minions.

I know that time makes this impossible, but one can only imagine how much better this film would have been with "Viva del Santo!" By Southern Culture on the Skids playing during the fight scenes.

Stitches. (2023)

A group of friends unleash an evil witch during a cabin getaway.

Sock puppet horror is a genre that doesn't get the love nor respect that it deserves.

A horror-comedy that uniquely features a cast of handmade sock puppets, including two celebrity sock puppets that I won't be naming. No spoilers here.

Deadstream. (2022)

A disgraced content creator tries to resurrect his career.

He livestreams himself spending the night in Death Manor, a notorious haunted house where several people have died over the years.

A DIY horror-comedy project done by a husband and wife. It pokes fun at internet personalities and the found footage genre while paying tribute to B horror movies. Ironically, it does a better job of found footage than many films that take things seriously.

Make sure to read the comments made by the viewers, they add so much to the humor.

Bodies Bodies Bodies. (2022)

A group of friends reunite at a parent's mansion for a "hurricane party". They start playing a murder in the dark-style game called Bodies Bodies Bodies, which quickly goes horribly wrong.

A horror-mystery-dark comedy that someone described as "Mean Girls" meet Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None". It also satirizes dependence on cellphones and the internet as well as the upper class.

Each actor brings their own style to their roles and gives them personality, no matter how insufferable and obnoxious the characters can be.

A woman starts to suspect that her husband is having an affair with their new housekeeper, the orphaned daughter of a shaman priestess. The girl carries a wooden sinsang doll that her mother gave her for protection, which gives the wife terrible nightmares.

A Korean horror film that's also a psychological study.

The viewer is guessing right towards the very end.

The lead actress does a fine job of portraying a woman who is either cursed by a spell or on the brink of madness.

A delightfully gory and sometimes darkly funny horror anthology with segments done by several directors.

Definitely NSFW, but you shouldn't be watching movies at work anyways.

Dead in the Water. (2018)

An all-female crew on an icebreaker in the North Pacific rescue a man from a life raft. They soon discover that he is infected with a deadly body controlling parasite. In the meantime, they are 600 miles from shore with a vicious storm approaching.

I admit it. Sci-Fi Originals are a guilty pleasure of mine. This one was a fun watch. The story was pretty good, despite being predictable, and the acting was fine.

If one can ignore the occasional flaw, like the bolt action rifle that holds that holds five rounds being fired like a semi-automatic ten times before its empty, it's entertaining.

Little Joe. (2019)

Alice is a botanist, plant breeder, and single mother who creates "Little Joe", a flowering plant that gives its caretakers joy. She sneaks one home for her son, only to suspect that its effects are deeper and darker than just feelings of happiness.

A science fiction-horror movie that relies on unease with a sense that things aren't quite as perfect as they seem.

Another theme is getting a product out to consumers quickly despite doubt and potential risks.

A creepy little ending that sneaks up on you.

A newlywed couple spend their honeymoon at the bride's family's secluded cabin. One night, she goes sleepwalking in the woods. When she returns, she looks the same, but things about her are vaguely different, which becomes more frightening with time.

A psychological slow burn horror film that gradually amplifies the tension. A bit of body horror as well, but nothing that detracts from the dark atmosphere and uneasy mood of a well told story. The two lead actors excel at their roles, playing the parts of a couple dealing with the fright of an unknown wedge being driven between them.

A young priest is ordered to perform a three-night prayer vigil during the wake of a nobleman's daughter in a remote village. He soon finds out she's actually a witch seeking revenge.

A Russian folk horror movie filmed during the Soviet era and based off a short story written by Nikoli Gogol in 1835.

A decent storyline strongly based on witchcraft folklore.

The special effects are surprisingly good for the time and location.

A young woman in Victorian London has her body brought back to life via a brain transplant by an unorthodox surgeon as an experiment. Free from social norms and prejudices, she goes on a journey to discover self-awareness, knowledge, sensuality, and freedom.

A surreal and absurdist fantasy/comedy that's also very touching at times. Beautiful cinematography in a Victorian steampunk setting.

Director Yorgos Lathimos is at his best here. Emma Stone knocks it out of the park in her role as Bella. Mark Ruffalo is hilarious as Duncan. Wilhelm Dafoe is a perfect fit as Dr. Godwin Baxter.

One of the funniest movies I've ever seen, albeit definitely NSFW.
