Missed educational/promotional opportunity while on leave

This is a long shot, but seeing if anyone else was in a similar position. I was out of the country on pre-approved leave for 6 weeks and therefore did not have access to emails (IT has already sent emails saying it’ll be flagged if someone logs in from outside Ireland and we also are blocked to set email rules for messaging forwarding to a private email). During this time there was an expression of interest for an apprenticeship programme that I would’ve loved to do, a dream career opportunity. The deadline was the week before I returned to the office. I immediately emailed HR to see if they would make an exception and allow me to submit a late EOI. I didn’t get back a yes or no just that the deadline was so and so date, etc. I told them I was chancing my arm as I was on leave and only just saw the email, there was no reply. Anyone been in a similar situation? Should I submit a formal appeal to the head of HR? Or is this a lost cause? I don’t think this opportunity will arise again. To note, it was just an EOI not a formal application.

Personal injury case, urgent call from solicitor after years of radio silence!

I’ve been going through a personal injury case since February 2021. PIAB awarded a certain amount. And while I accepted it through my solicitor, the defendant never responded so only option was to go to court. Told my solicitor I want to try and settle with other side before thinking about court (solicitor wanted me to go to court as he thought the PIAB award wasn’t enough and a judge would give me more but I really didn’t care about getting a higher amount). Heard nothing again until October 2024, where again the defendant was stalling and asked my solicitor for an extension before filing a default of appearance. Then I heard nothing, rang for updates…nothing, complete radio silence. Only update Ive received was January 2026, where the secretary said my solicitor still has not heard from the other side.

At 4:30pm today I got a voicemail from the solicitor saying to ring back asap as I need to come in tomorrow. I was so surprised to even hear from them that I didn’t ask what it was about they just said the solicitor wants to see me asap.

I’m so nervous now and millions of thoughts going through my head. What possible reasons would the solicitor ring me urgently when I haven’t heard from him in years?? I’d love to hear they’ve just settled and it’s all done and dusted. What would the solicitor possibly need to see me about so urgently after I feel like I’ve been ghosted for nearly two years!?!?!?
