Is it normal to have such little work to do?

Hi all,

Just after some additional perspective here. Ive recently started as a design engineer in Brisbane about 2 months ago, coming out of a Forensic role with less design experience. When I first started, I got given a project to work on and a senior engineer to help guide me through.

Once the initial designs of that project were complete, I went nearly a whole week without anything to do. I eventually reached out to the director and asked if there are any other projects I can assist on. Following that, I got given another one to do and worked through that.

Fast-forwarding to today, I am in a similar situation with little bits a pieces to attend to here and there on these ongoing projects.

But I am wondering if this is normal to have such little stuff to do? I dont feel particularly good showing up at work and waiting for something to pop up for me to be busy.

Genuinely curious to hear some outsiders perspective on this.

Looking for guidance on moving out of retail role into something different

Hi all, I'm hoping I can get some guidance/advice on transitioning from a role in retail into ideally an office-based role. This advice is for my partner, not myself, as I wouldnt know where to start in this situation...

My partner is currently working in retail as a team leader at Myer in south side Brisbane, but she finds that the role is becoming far too physically demanding and the pressure is constantly overwhelming due to massive under staffing. She wants to move into an office role - ideally doing stuff like data entry as an example. Pretty straightforward situation - I know...

Here what I was hoping to find out from anyone who is willing to share insight:

- Whether she would have any luck securing such a role assuming no office work experience in Australia?

- Whether any further training (like certs or online courses) would be particularly beneficial?

- The names of recuiters who may be able to assist her?

She is currently taking the old-fashioned logical approach by looking for jobs online, but I just thought I'd take a different approach and ask strangers online for help haha...(Ive had some really insightful career advice from Reddit before actually, so definitely worth a shot)

Thanks in advance all 😊

Forensic Engineer to Design Engineer (structural) change - advice needed

Hi all,

Im currently working as a forensic structural engineer in SE Queensland and I'm looking to change my role to a design- focussed role.

The problem I seem to be facing is this: If I apply to a design role, my competition will be other design engineers which will obviously reduce my chances and I want to figure out how to navigate around that.

My goal is to get into structural design of commercial buildings, but I anticipate that I would likely need to start in residential design first as this would match closer to some of the experience I have already gained.

What are everyones thoughts about this? Does residential design carry some weight if I apply in the future for commercial design roles? What other alternatives should I consider?

Any advice to help me here is most welcome 😊
