3 months since moving to Brissy and no luck.

Hi all. A bit of a back story before I get into it.

My wife and I recently moved to Brisbane from NZ.

We're both 40, working professions who owned our home mortgage free in NZ.

We were sick of the cold weather where we lived and decided to make a lifestyle change so we sold up everything we had and made the move over, now living up in the Mortan Bay area.

My wife found herself a job within the first 3 weeks we landed, and a very good one at that. Enough to support the both of us so I'm very grateful for that.

But for myself, holy hell it's been a tough grind.

I worked in the aviation industry for 6+ years as a Airport Rescue Firefighter. I was a station officer who managed a team of 6, deputy chief and absolutely loved this role. I was sad to leave, but i knew warmer weather was on the horizon. Prior to this, I worked in the heavy manufacturing industry for 10years.

HR license, high reach forklifts, front end loaders, bobcats, you name it, I've probably operated it. Unfortunately the kiwi forklift licence isn't transferable to Aus so I haven't gone and paid to get that ticket just yet. To be honest I was hoping I wouldn't need to, but it looks like I won't have much of an choice.

I think I've lost count on the amount of applications I've sent off via seek and employer websites. Initially I was applying for positions that matched my previous salary or higher but I'm striking absolutely nothing. Getting a bit desperate at this stage and finding it a bit of a challenge to keep the mental health in check. My wife tells me to enjoy this period of transition but i just want to be a contributing husband again. But seriously, I've never been unemployed for this long before. 😬

I'm very aware of the current political climate here and was apprehensive about writing my story because "bloody migrants" right? 😅...but I get it.

If anyone has some tips or can point me in a better direction than I'm already heading, It would be very much appreciated.

Thanks team.

Where can I find a weekend market/stall job in Brisbane?

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for a casual weekend job working at markets around Brisbane — food stalls, artisan markets, farmers markets, pop-ups, coffee stalls, anything along those lines.

I’m available for weekend work and would love something social, hands-on, and a bit different from a standard office/retail environment. Happy to help with customer service, sales, food service, setup/pack down, early starts, etc.

Does anyone know the best places to find these kinds of jobs? Are there particular markets, Facebook groups, businesses, or websites worth checking out?

Thanks! 😊

31M, 4-year employment gap due to medical issues, 400+ applications and still no job. What would you do?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some honest advice because I'm starting to run out of ideas.

I'm 31 years old and based in the Redlands area of Brisbane. I've been out of work for almost 4 years due to a medical condition that is now well controlled and no longer preventing me from working.

Before that, I spent around 12 years working for Woolworths in customer service and retail roles.

I also hold:

  • Diploma of Information Technology
  • Diploma of Business
  • Certificate III in Business
  • Certificate II in Retail
  • Xero training
  • Microsoft 365 training and self-study (Microsoft 365 Fundamentals level)

Over the past year I've applied for more than 400 jobs across administration, customer service, IT help desk, service desk, reception and retail positions.

I've applied directly, through recruitment agencies, local businesses, councils, charities, labour hire companies and larger organisations. I've had some interviews and a few applications progress, but nothing has resulted in a job offer so far.

The main areas I'm targeting are:

Administration – because it seems like the most realistic pathway into office work given my qualifications and customer service background.

IT Help Desk / Service Desk – because I have a Diploma of IT, I've continued studying Microsoft 365 and cloud technologies, and my long-term goal is to build a career in IT.

Customer Service / Retail – because it's where I have the most experience and I'd rather be working than sitting at home waiting for the perfect opportunity.

I've also started looking at volunteering, work experience, temporary contracts and other ways of building recent experience and gaining current referees.

At this point I'm honestly wondering whether I'm targeting the wrong roles, whether the employment gap is hurting me more than I realise, or whether I need a completely different strategy.

If you were in my position, what would you do?

Would you keep pursuing admin and IT roles?

Would you focus on recruiters and labour hire companies?

Would you take almost any office-based role just to get recent experience and referees?

Or is there something obvious that I'm missing?

I'd especially appreciate hearing from recruiters, hiring managers, or anyone who has successfully returned to work after a long employment gap.

Thanks for any advice.

Looking for a part-time job (administrative niche)

Hi everyone!

I’m currently looking for an additional part-time remote opportunity.

I have experience in customer service, virtual assistance, social media moderation/admin support, lead generation, internet research, and administrative tasks. I also have experienced working with project coordination and proposal preparation, where attention to detail and organization are essential.

Some tasks I can help with:
• Customer support (email, chat)
• Virtual assistant and admin support
• Social media moderation and community management
• Lead generation and online research
• Data entry and spreadsheet management
• Email management and follow-ups
• Documentation and process support

I’m highly organized, quick to learn new tools and SOPs, and comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.

If you’re looking for a reliable part-time VA or support specialist, I’d be happy to connect and share my resume.

Thank you!

QLD Government Jobs

Helloo!! I am having a hard time looking for jobs. I am currently doing my bachelors of nursing, but I haven’t been on placement yet until the end of this year. I have 5 years of hospitality experience and I have passion for cooking as well. I tried applying for food officer at QLD health and I am keen to also be a theatre assistant at a hospital, even if I do prep for operations and assist healthcare workers.

I need help, recommendations or referral if anyone knows or works in there. I am in north brisbane. I am happy to work in hospitals and love the environment. Just wanted to see and feel the vibe before I do my internship too.

I do also volunteer at RBWH if that helps. Thank you so so much & I hope to start soon xx 🤍🩷
