New cartridge day!

New cartridge day!

Upgrading from an AT-VM95C, the AT-VM745xML is in a whole other world. I’ve put about 10 hours into it so far and it’s already showing just how good it is. I can’t believe how many subtle details were being hidden by the 95C. I actually have treble extension and a real soundstage now. This might just be my endgame cart.*

I have my Schiit Skoll phono preamp set to 100pf. 50pf makes the cart sound a little flat to my ears, and any higher than 100pf makes it sound too hot in the treble.

*At least until I do something stupid like buy a new turntable. Thankfully, that won’t be in the budget for a very long time.

What’s a good resource for researching cartridges?

I was a dummy and killed the cartridge that came with my TEAC TN400S. The only immediately available replacement was an Audio Technica AT-VM95C, which was a noticeable step down in detail and smoothness.

I’ve saved some cash and I’m starting to look for an upgrade. I was looking at the Ortofon MM Bronze and the MC X20, but I feel overwhelmed by all of the available options. I have a Schiit Skoll for a preamp, so I should be able to run just about any cartridge.

How does a beginner choose a cartridge? Are there any good resources available?
