Tale to a Million

I'm 46 years old today

Quit $50k/y job in 2015 with $85k in savings and RRSP

My philosophy was that I should not be living life like a man who has a family and mortgage if I don't. If I continue at my unskilled job, I'm going to be miserable forever so I have to quit. My plan at this point was to volunteer somewhere for a year and find a part-time job at some point. I promised myself to never be miserable at a full-time job again.

Started investing. First stock: Dollarama

I watched one video with Warren Buffett where he said to buy good companies and hold them forever. I wanted some growth though so I bought Dollarama

Invested $50k in weed stocks in 2016

My plan was to move out of my $600/m small ground suite and to my mother's house. Met a guy at the McDonald's parking lot after going to the city dump. We got to talking and he told me about weed stocks. I thought to myself, this could be it!

Got up to $500k in late 2018

I guess I don't have to get that part-time job. Maybe I'll never have to work again! Began buying household names with cannabis profits.

$600k during COVID

Yeah!

Burned about $100k in questionable stocks during COVID

Did some stupid stuff with a portion of my portfolio. What do you expect from a guy who made his money in weed stocks? Not doing that again.

Got a warehouse job in 2022

At this point I never felt so dead inside from boredom. With inflation and stocks down also, I decided to get a job. Portfolio down to ~$350k at the bottom of 2022. Maybe more, but I stopped looking.

This morning, my portfolio hit $1 million. I took a screenshot and went back to sleep. Throughout the day, every few hours or so I would remember that I'm a millionaire now. Oh yeah, cool. Also, whatever, was how I felt. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful. I grew up disadvantaged, never met my father, absent mother, poverty and fell into the textbook scenario of someone with my upbringing. I always thought I was just going to get by in life by not working much and suffer the consequences of being poor. The $1 million milestone will not feel as euphoric as you thought it would when you had under $100k because once you hit $700k-$800k, you've already sampled the main course.

Kids, don't do what I did. If you start when you're 20 by investing $500 -$1000/m into a major index ETF or even Canadian banks stocks you'll probably have more than me by my age. You can go through your 20s without having the anxiety I did from knowing you're going to have something nice by mid age without having to do much.

Just wanted to tell my story cause it's not something I can really tell anyone IRL.
