Mac’s best era Is coming
I have a feeling we’re about to enter Mac DeMarco’s best era.
For the last several years, it felt like he stopped trying to make “important” records. He was just making music on his own terms: demos, One Wayne G, Five Easy Hot Dogs, Guitar. It all felt incredibly honest, almost like he was inviting us into his creative process instead of trying to write the next classic.
But something feels different now.
I don’t think he’s changing his sound. I think he’s finally embracing what he already is.
Mac isn’t a beloved artist because of the jokes, the laid back personality, or the endless demos. Those things make him charming, but his legacy was built on songs that became part of people’s lives. He’s genuinely one of the great songwriters of our generation.
Now imagine someone with that songwriting ability, combined with the creative freedom and confidence he’s gained over the last decade.
I don’t think the next project will try to recreate Salad Days or chase nostalgia. I think it’s going to be a synthesis of everything he’s learned throughout his career. Same soul, same honesty, but distilled into something truly solid.
If that’s where he’s headed, I honestly think his greatest work might still be ahead of him.
