New in TX Carry Compass: §46.03 and federal place restrictions are now visible

Yesterday, a user (thank you u/tbrand009) pointed out an important gap: a hospital could have no 30.xx signs but still identify itself as a §46.03 establishment—and a federal building could appear completely green even though a federal restriction applies.

That feedback led to a much larger update.

TX Carry Compass can now display community-reported place restrictions separately from 30.05, 30.06, 30.07, and 51% signage:

  • Texas Penal Code §46.03
  • Federal facilities
  • USPS property
  • Military installations
  • Other site-specific federal restrictions

You’ll see these reports on map markers, search results, place details, carry explanations, and iOS proximity alerts. There are also new §46.03 and Federal search filters.

A few important details:

  • Applicable restrictions take priority over reassuring sign-only results.
  • Reports include an evidence note and go through moderation.
  • Military and other federal reports are presented as site-specific—not universal rules.
  • A “Government / Military Building” category does not automatically mean weapons are prohibited.
  • Explicit USPS reports take priority over the existing name-based USPS warning, including corrections to false matches.
  • “Not reported” or “does not apply” is never presented as confirmation that carrying is lawful.

The contribution workflow is now called Signs & Restrictions, and you can submit these classifications when adding or updating a location. On-site photos are encouraged, but not required.

This feature came directly from community feedback, so please keep it coming. If you find a location with a §46.03 notice, federal restriction, or site-specific policy, submit what you observed—including the exact building, entrance, grounds, or posted authority when possible.

As always, these are community reports, not legal advice. Verify current law, notices, exceptions, property boundaries, and site policies before carrying.

These new changes are being reviewed by both Google and Apple. Make sure to check for updates tomorrow.

TX Carry Compass update: See nearby businesses that need sign checks, photos, or confirmation

Hey y'all. I’ve been working on a new feature for TX Carry Compass that makes it much easier to help keep the map accurate.

The old Submit tab is becoming Contribute.

When you’re signed in and allow location access, the new Contribution Inbox shows businesses within five miles that need something specific:

  • A current business or signage photo
  • Confirmation of whether a 30.05, 30.06, 30.07, or 51% sign is posted
  • A validity assessment for a reported sign
  • A fresh “I Saw This Today” confirmation when a listing has never been confirmed or hasn’t been checked recently

Each business appears only once, with all of its available tasks grouped together. Pick one, and the app takes you directly to the existing contribution flow.

A few other details:

  • The tab badge counts businesses, not individual tasks.
  • Your pending submission removes that task from your inbox while it’s reviewed.
  • Contributions still go through moderation.
  • “Add a Place” is still available inside the Contribute tab.
  • The nearby reminder appears at most once per day—no new push notifications or nagging.

The goal is simple: when someone has a minute to help, the app should tell them exactly where their contribution would be useful.

I’d especially like feedback about these things:

  • Does a five-mile radius feel right?
  • Which task would you be most likely to complete?
  • Is there another piece of business/signage information the inbox should eventually cover?

The new version is in review both by Apple and Google.

TX Carry Compass update

Hey y'all!

I’ve been working on a major update to TX Carry Compass, including a new way to add business photos that provides useful context without preventing anyone from contributing.

Here’s how it works:

  • You can submit a new business from anywhere—there’s no longer a distance requirement.
  • Photos selected from your phone are labeled “Uploaded from the gallery.”
  • If you’re within 300 feet of the business, you can use the app’s built-in camera.
  • Photos taken this way are labeled “Taken at the business.”
  • The app checks distance, location freshness, and GPS accuracy when you press the shutter.
  • Your exact location and location EXIF are never uploaded.
  • Trusted photos still go through normal moderation; they aren’t automatically approved.

This will work when adding a new business, adding a photo to an existing business, or attaching photo evidence to an update request. The goal is to give the community and moderators better context while still letting people contribute older photos or submit information remotely.

I’ve also added a new public community chat where users can discuss Texas carry laws, signage, businesses, app updates, and other relevant topics. It includes reporting and moderation tools to help keep it useful.

Now, when you send feedback, I also ask for permission to contact you regarding what you're suggesting/reporting.

Right now this version is being reviewed by Apple and it should be available soon.

For Android users: the Android app is currently being rebuilt from the ground up. It’ll be available soon with full iOS parity, including:

  • Proximity alerts for nearby reported signage
  • The new trusted-photo system
  • Public community chat
  • Business submissions and updates
  • A new, much nicer UI

This is a community-powered project, so feedback is always appreciated. What other features would make the app more useful when you’re out checking businesses or reporting signage?

Well, yeah. I'm working on it. The idea is having a fast and simple forum. It's being built from scratch, so there is no data at all. For now, the accounts are separate from the main app. Go check it out and share your feedback: https://txcarrycompass.forum/

If you don't know what TX Carry Compass is, go to txcarrycompass.app It's basically a replacement for texas3006 and its available for Android, iOS, and the web.
