"He smelled rather wonderful"

August 23, 1883 - Emma says Pierce's jacket smelled of "storm and musk"

June 21, 1884 - Emma says Hawkes smelled "of dusk and woodland and starlight" (MARRY ME)
(If I remember correctly, his scarf smelled faintly of pear at one point, right? EDIT: ADDED BELOW)

April 22, 1884 - Hawkes' jacket "carried the scent of pear."

Has she ever described the way Islington smells? Between all that dancing and The Incident, she's been in his arms plenty of times to know!

Can you think of any other references to the literal scent of people or their home?

(I know she frequently describes the smell of rain and storm with Pierce's presence but I took that to be a bit more metaphorical and poetic.)

Dissolute Viscount and Islington

An interesting little side-by-side:

December 17, 1883
Emma says she needs a:

  1. dissolute viscount
  2. with plenty of funds
  3. excellent at whist

Back on June 9, 1883, Emma overhears Roland tell Islington (a titled person) his table STARTS at 50k (plenty of funds) and then Roland says Islington is "a devil at whist" (excellent at whist).

Fun material for Islington endgamers. :)

Agnes Dowd and Islington?

What did I miss? In Vol 8, Islington and Mariana speak of Emma's chaperone:

"She has a chaperone," Islington attempted.

A pause with a palpable snap of patience from Mariana. "Who isn't real!"

Islington began to laugh, just then. He laughed harder than I've ever heard before. "You should have seen---" he tried to say but could not finish.

I looked back at Vol 7, March 8-11 - the account of Miss Dowd, and I don't find that Islington had any firsthand knowledge of Miss Dowd's visit. So it's a little weird that he says, "You should have seen---" as if he had been there. Am I completely missing something, is this a continuity oopsie, or can this be explained some other way?? Maybe he had in mind something else related.

It doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things but my brain is hung up on it. I'm hoping for your thoughts so I can put it to rest!
