To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole

>The apocalypse has come and gone, and against all odds, Pharloom remains standing. The time has come for Hornet to return to Hallownest, accompanied by friends and allies: Shakra hopes to explore the mythical land beyond the wastes, and properly lay to rest a member of her own tribe; Lace fears unraveling without the aid of a Weaver, while contending with the immensity of a future free of her mother’s threads; and the Green Prince lives only only to spite the Citadel, passively seeking a more honorable end than might be found in the rubble of his homeland.

>Meanwhile, Hornet returns from Pharloom with magic and knowledge that might aid in the slow recovery of Hallownest and Deepnest–and perhaps offer the chance to call home the sibling she once thought lost to her forever.

Chapter 8: Is It The Light You Fear, Or What It Might Illuminate

Lace, Hollow, and Shakra are chilling together in the Queen’s Gardens; meanwhile, it’s time for more Mantis Politics! A look at what’s happening with Deepnest, Hornet’s immediate future plans, and Vise’s leadership ability.

Also, the Green Prince has a bit of a crash out! It was probably a bit overdue…

On another note, we are officially caught up with my backlog! I'm currently working on Ch9, which I expect to be up in a week or so.

Disclaimer: This comic is not and never will be 100% canon compliant. It's about engaging with what I consider the most interesting themes of the games in the realm of "but what if...".

Chapter 7: The Shape of a Future You Can’t Yet Grasp

It’s been ten thousand years since we had a chapter properly focused on the green bean, but it looks like he’s finally stopped dissociating long enough to participate in the plot. It’s probably because of the Emotional Support Grubs, let’s be honest.

At any rate, we’re kicking off his plotline properly, with mantis politics and the introduction of the only major original character in this comic–Vise, a mantis who until recently existed in my notes exclusively as “Himbo Mantis.”

Chapter 6: Finally Equipping that Compass You Bought

Folks have wondered whether Ghost and/or the Shade Lord will make an appearance! Well, it doesn’t happen this chapter either! Instead we get a totally different miracle: some of the characters are actually talking and communicating with each other (with varying degrees of emotional honesty).

Fun fact, this chapter has 3-4x as much dialogue as any of the previous chapters. However, these conversations are important because they explicitly establish the core motives (or lack thereof) of most of the central cast, and points us in the general direction the plot will be taking.

A God of Dreams

A colored version of Hollow’s godly form from Chapter 5 of my ongoing Hollow Knight fancomic, To Bind Our Echoes That We May Be Whole.

I don’t actually think much about what the comic would be like in color. There are a lot of very intentional decisions about my process that prevent me from spending too much time fixated on making individual pages or panels perfect, and the use of grayscale is one of them. As a result, I couldn’t tell you what colors I would choose for most pages, though “something like canon” is probably a safe bet.

Not so for this reveal though!

Hollow’s godly form has always been in color for me. Design-wise, it’s some combination of the Pure Vessel and the Pale King, lending the silver-blue/gray/white primary colors. However, their secondary is the soft gold we see when confronting the three Dreamers.

Chapter 5: Nightmares and Gods

A brief look into Lace’s mind! She is so very, very normal, and coping in healthy ways. We also learn a little more about what Hollow has been up to since the end of the first game… (They didn’t mean to wake her, but they weren’t expecting her to perceive them either.)

>Meanwhile, Hornet returns from Pharloom with magic and knowledge that might aid in the slow recovery of Hallownest and Deepnest–and perhaps offer the chance to call home the sibling she once thought lost to her forever.

Chapter 4: Living is a Funeral to Self you Buried

At long last, Hornet arrives home, welcomed by the White Lady and her elder sibling. We finally get to see Hornet’s softer, more playful side. Introductions are made, gifts are given, and Lace rapidly learns that the spider has little patience for insults to her sibling.

Note: This comic does not ship Hollow with anybody. They are not flirting, and do not see gifting flowers as a romantic gesture, nor is it received as such. However, Lace is likely the only recipient to kind of grasp the value of the gift.

Chapter 3: Less Like a Promise, More Like a Vow

Hornet is greeted by familiar sights and familiar faces. She’s been gone a while, but her involuntary sojourn to Pharloom wasn’t nearly the length of time that Ghost has been missing. Things have changed in their absence, but there are still people waiting for them to come home.

Chapter 2: Fighting Our Reflections in a Fun House Mirror

That apology sure wasn't addressed to the Green Prince. But maybe none of it ever was.

Checking in on the hell roadtrip! Given the personalities at play, there was no way they wouldn’t come to blows at least once. Now that they've gotten it out of their system, it's time to finally return to Hallownest...

Chapter 1: You Must Gather Your Party Before Venturing Forth

First part of a long form comic that I've been working on for the past several months! I've got a backlog of chapters (all available on AO3 and Tumblr), but have been going back and forth about cross-posting to reddit.

As another note, this comic is not and never will be 100% canon compliant. It's about engaging with what I consider the most interesting themes of the games in the realm of "but what if...".

Thank you for joining me on this journey!
