Studio D'Artisan Amami Dorozome Mud-Dyed Jacquard Vest

I'm a big fan of vests which I find really versatile across different seasons. I've got a couple of wool/wax and denim ones for the cooler months, and two sashiko ones which work great layering over t-shirts when it's warmer. When the temperature hits 28ºC and above I'll typically just be in linen and light cotton shirts, but I find this type of layering works perfectly on a day like today where it's 25ºC and windy with intermittent clouds.

The newest addition to my vest collection is this Studio D'Artisan jacquard vest made using a 1000+ year old mud dyeing technique. The texture on it is crazy, combining the unique colour from the mud dye with a mix of jaquard and sashiko weave. Paired it with a nice textured t-shirt and some Engineered Garments fatigue shorts I picked up on eBay for £60.

Military Fit (featuring my new favourite summer boot)

Like many here I've been eyeing up some Orslow fatigues, but I've baulked at the price of them both new and on the used market. I managed to get this pair new for £100 after using a couple of discount codes and am delighted to add my first piece of camo to my wardrobe. They're made using a deadstock ripstop cotton. It's described by Orslow as tiger camo but looks to be a different variant from the more common ones. I umm'ed and ahh'ed about them for a while but was inspired after looking at a wave of great camo fits posted on the sub a year ago - so thanks to anyone reading this who posted back then!

I'm also delighted to have found my new go-to pair of summer boots. I've always been a big fan of chukkas and in recent years have cycled through a few pairs. First off was a pair of lightly used Red Wing work chukkas. I loved the look of them but they were always a bit too small in the toe box and never a great fit. I sold them and replaced them with a lightly used pair of Cheaney chukkas but also found them quite uncomfortable and more formal than what I was looking for, so they're currently for sale too. I was about to pull the trigger on some desert boots from Jadd Shoes but right beforehand came across Astorflex's Greenflex. They're quite possibly the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn and despite being leather lined worked so well in the recent heatwave we had in the UK.

Another SDA Futa-Ai Jacket Fit

Been seeing quite a few posts of Studio D’Artisan’s new Futa-Ai denim, first the jeans and now the jacket. Pink and purple are two of my favourite colours and I love a heavy irregular slub texture so I knew I needed this denim. I missed the jeans as they launched when I was busy travelling for work. Thought I’d missed the jacket too but managed to snag it from Okayama, albeit one or two sizes too large! The smallest they had was a raw 44 and when I opened it and first tried it on I cracked up laughing at how enormous it was! However after two hot soaks I managed to shrink it down significantly. It’s still pretty big but I really like the oversized fit which complements my two other denim jackets which are much more fitted. It’ll be a good one for the colder weather layered with knitwear!

Recent Pickups in Indonesia

I recently got back from a work trip to Indonesia and am sharing a fit of a couple of things I got while there. I spent quite a lot of my childhood living there and have always loved Indonesian batik for both the vibrant designs and the intricate craft that goes into making them, most notably hand-drawn batik tulis. Batik shirts are a key piece of formal wear for men in Indonesia, and there are a huge diversity of designs which reflects the cultural and religious diversity of the country. For example, I was on Indonesian Borneo and purchased a couple of shirts from the region which have Indigenous Dayak motifs and imagery of rainforest wildlife. When returning home I had a long layover in Jakarta and also bought a couple of shirts there, including this stunning tiger one. The material has a really interesting texture to it which reminds me of sashiko.

Indonesia has a great reputation for high quality heritage boots and denim so I had a look for shops in Jakarta that I could easily visit, and to my delight I found one close to the airport that it felt possible to reach without tempting fate in Jakarta traffic and potentially missing my flight! The place is called Denim House, and while it turned out not to have any Indonesian denim, it had one of the best selections of Japanese denim I’ve ever seen in my life, with a particularly deep and varied selection of Oni, Samurai, and Studio D’Artisan. I had time to kill so hung out and chatted with the guys there for a while, and while browsing came across a pair of jeans I’ve lusted over but have been sold out everywhere: Studio D’Artisan’s 15oz Awa Sho-ai Kakishibu Jeans, with natural indigo warp yarns and persimmon tannin weft yarns. To my delight they had them in a bunch of sizes including mine, and they were £450 which is even cheaper than they were at quite a few Japanese stores! Can’t recommend these guys highly enough so definitely recommend checking them out if you’re ever in Jakarta or transiting through there with some time to spare!

Sunny Weather Fit

Temperatures have dropped compared with the last few days so I’m in something other than linen today! Included is my Sugar Cane dobby western shirt that I picked up a few months ago with a gorgeous texture woven with 20-count warp and weft threads.
