Last House (Or Covid...)

So I've not finished watching the film but it struck me, how did the more extreme amongst you deal with Covid or in theory like the film if you suddenly ended up trapped inside? (Basic film premise, no internet, no outside communication, no tv or news, but electricity and water available, no forseeable help or ability to exit or order things, just what you have.)

Appreciation of someone else's non labelled minimalism

A moment of admiration for my in laws.

They come visit for months at a time, but (side step that conversation), they wash their underwear nightly and I noticed this time instead of using the towels we keep for them, they've got small versions of what look like the Turkish towels. I'm a one bag fan anyway but they've always been like an advanced model from China and away from reddit style forums pushing people to use Osprey and specific wonder brands. They're just getting on with life, no downloads, no snacks, morning rituals and same breakfast every day. Pretty minimalist but no labels.

It does get funny when we go to theirs and there is no spare towel (I pack one, husband doesn't) and also frustrating when you don't have a hairdryer there (I have since bought a travel one).

Meanwhile I'm still very much on our journey with just enough regular towels (five bath sheets and two hair ones (plus my microfiber for travel and a kiddy swimming towel thing) but struggling to figure out how to dry them anywhere other than the bannisters.

My collection

I'm missing at least three six eight bags (keeping myself accountable!) One traffic cone orange follie bag that was gifted to me (I tried hard to refuse) and never used, one maroon tartan from H&M, one leather tote which is still cute, one leather satchel which is too heavy (what was I thinking), my current daily and a random undescribable one that got fixed recently. Two more (Kipling and a random cartoon) have broken bits that need fixing. I exclude the backpacks which are all great and despite having five six of those, they all have clear purpose (work, library, onebag for travel, hiking etc.)

This is 20+ years including binning some worn out ones.

Putting it all together I conclude:

  • The bags never used were typically gifted.
  • If the bag is heavy I will never reach for it. You can see by the lack of chains.
  • I get most of my bags from my travels (I usually search local brands beforehand).
  • I like my leather so I best start looking after it.
  • I still don't have a bag for the wedding I need to go to! (I usually use the blue clutches.)

I have ABSOLUTELY used the smaak to death daily in the past few years. I got the zip fixed for £15 in Japan this month and they sent me a replacement strap after it broke in the first year. Highly recommend this one.

I'm contemplating a Toteme tlock for my next daily/use for this wedding.

Based on the above (and my other favourite forum being minimalism), it is very much time to cull!

Wedding guest attire

We've been invited to an evening wedding (church and beach) in Europe. I've not been to a wedding in years and am definitely not a fan of buying all the shapewear, shoes and paraphernalia that goes with a wedding guest dress. I'm also unlikely to go to another wedding or spend a day at the races! Any help out there for a middle aged lady? (FYI am on the round side and rental options not looking good or affordable.)

Anyone got a go to outfit for these things that isn't also used for funerals?!

Experiencing deep hatred of Japanese websites and trying to book a discounted online ticket since facial recognition available so the old posts re queuing shouldn't be so bad (still need to queue for a suica/pasmo though).

BUT! NOTHING HAPPENS WHEN I CLICK CONTINUE TO PURCHASE!

Why..buying for Kyoto Bio vortex was almost as bad but this is bad. Also though, we're trying to go via Nippori late night. Does anyone know if the transfer to Yamamote line has a manned gate and whether Japan has the same protocol most trains does of, if there's an empty seat your underage child can sit in it for free without judgement? Thanks.

Edit: used Edge instead and managed to get it to pay for a ticket finally. Guess I'm taking my tablet to Japan. Also realise I just saved about a quid each for the frustration, but better here than at night post a long haul flight!
