Sampling: Have I been limiting myself all this time? Need Advice

I've been producing as a hobby with friends for almost 5 years. I make my own loops but sometimes I have fun chopping random old samples in Serato. I'm stuck on a workflow habit of keeping everything strictly on rigid 2, 4, or 8-bar loops to keep the counts clean and the drums hitting on the right spots (I'm not saying drums should be hitting on super exact times, I may offset them a little bit, but they still need to sound right with the chops) and respecting the metronome.

While studying some Kanye remake projects in FL Studio, I noticed on some videos everything on the playlist sat off grid at random timings. Drops would hit at odd spots like 8 bars plus 3 beats instead of standard markers like bar 9, 13, or 17, and sections ran on uncertain lengths like 6 bars and 3 beats rather than clean exact counts, like 4 or 8 bars.

Have I been limiting myself by forcing samples into the grid? For heavy samplers, how do you handle these asymmetrical chops without losing the bounce?

My concern is, if I start relying purely on my ear and ignoring the metronome and standard timings, won't it end up being difficult for an artist to rap or sing over a beat with uncertain loop lengths and sections? Thank you.

Map Scale and Driving/Immersion

Everyone is worried about the arcadeyness of the driving, but I think we’re overlooking how much the map's scale and proportions also dictate that feeling. I want a map that’s dense and interactive, but, more importantly, I want to feel small in it. I want to look at the world and feel like I’m just another person in it, just like the other NPCs.

This changes a lot, especially the driving. I agree that a satisfying driving system is probably 75% vehicle physics and collisions, but it’s also about the way the camera behaves (which I think R* always nails compared to games like Watch Dogs or Saints Row) and the sense of space.

I think a huge part of why RDR2 feels so immersive is precisely because of its sense of scale, besides the slower pace and all.

In GTA you have fast cars and airplanes so R* needs to find a way to translate that heavy atmospheric feeling into a modern setting. The faster we can move, the more realistic the proportions need to be.

I’m pretty optimistic about this based on everything we’ve seen so far. I just wanted to bring it up for discussion because I feel like the map's scale is linked to almost every aspect of the gameplay, yet I rarely see anyone mentioning it.

▲ 1 r/DMT

I’m looking for some advice on a gift for my mom. She’s been a deep diver into spirituality for as long as I can remember and I’ve been trying to nudge her toward the psychedelic side of that world. We’ve talked about it a few times and even got her to watch "DMT: The Spirit Molecule*"*, which sparked some pretty interesting conversations.

She’s pretty open minded and is genuinely curious, and I want to get her a book that bridges these two worlds the best possible.

Naturally, Rick Strassman’s book is the first one that comes to mind, but I’m wondering if there’s something more "complete" or profound for someone who’s looking for the deep metaphysical side of the experience, approaching topics like the afterlife and even reincarnation.

I'm looking for a recommendation that really dives into the connection between the soul, other dimensions, and those mysterious entities people encounter, while still grounding it all in a broader spiritual context. I’m open to books about multiple psychedelics and their link with religion and spirituality, but if I were to get her a book about one specific substance, it would have to be DMT.

Even though I’ve never tried it, it’s the one that fascinates me the most and feels like the most captivating way to introduce her to this world.

Appreciate any suggestions, thank you.
