Completely Outrageous Requirement for an online class
I am a Zoology major and I am finishing my internship and the last class I need to graduate this summer. The class I needed was IBIO 445 Evolution. It is an online class and I have had no major issues with them in the past. Some of them have been a little work heavy but that’s to be expected for the accelerated format. However I just checked the syllabus as my class starts tomorrow and was greeted with this graded “assignment” that you will fail the class if you don’t do. I am currently working roughly 70 hours a week right now as 40 of them is my unpaid internship and the other 30ish hours are my paid job so I can actually pay the bills. If it was just the other assignments it would be perfectly manageable and I could get stuff done at my own pace. But having an arbitrary requirement of amount of hours spent on the class is genuinely insane and I have never seen this in any online class before. I’m positive even some of the most dedicated college students aren’t spending 19 hours a week on a single class especially one over the summer. All this is going to lead to is people faking their logs for the grade or just using up all of their time working on stuff that they probably could have done in way less time. In a hypothetical scenario you could ace every assignment and get a perfect score on the final exam but if you only logged spending 35 hours total on the work then you fail the class. I’m willing to bet that there will be less than 10% of the students in the class that do this completely legitimately.
