21 years old should I live in the hub East Lansing or akers / other student housing

So basically, I did my first two years at community college. I will be 21 when starting school.

I didn’t immediately get housing because I am a transfer student, but I just got approved this is the email they sent me. I really want the actual college experience since I got nothing in high school or community.

I am really afraid of being socially isolated at MSU and even just going to school then clubs then home, I’m not very good at getting super close with people. I feel like staying in the dorms would really help with this as it’s so many people crammed in one space, I also do really well with people, and im super flexible although I can be a bit shy. I really wanna go out and basically work hard to play hard sort of thing.

But again, a more upscale apartment might be good since I am a bit older and I know that these are closer to the business classes that I will be taking.

What do you guys think? The correct option is in this situation?

Helpppp

Bike trails

Best bike trails in east Lansing/campus? I’m spending my first summer down here post grad and love to leisurely ride my bike around. So far I’ve gone down the main ones on campus but are there any hidden gems?

Survey Statistics Help

TL;DR: Need to connect with statistician who knows a lot about surveys that is willing to help (unpaid) with a research project

Hi all - So I've been doing a research project that involves classroom design on student performance. The data is student grades and survey results from before and after the semester. I really want to open this up to more classrooms and to make this a serious project with the intent of publishing. Right now, I can only do very basic statistics because I don't really understand how to appropriately do stats on a survey. I would especially like to be able to make statements like 'If a student with ___ demographics receives treatment 1, they are more likely to select answer 2.'
I know there is a stats consulting center, but they cost $$, and this is all on my own free time and I have no funding.
I am hoping for a professor or grad student who would be interested in helping with the statistical analysis of this project. I'm decent with stats, so I think if you could help with setting up the code, then I would be fine after that. However, if you are interested in being more involved with the analysis then I would be happy to include you as an author if we are ever able to publish. Thanks all!

Reminder to Rate your Landlords and Professors

As everyone heads home for summer, I just wanted to take a second to reflect on the past year at MSU. East Lansing always has a way of turning chaos into memories somehow.

This year was a mix of late nights, random memories, stressful moments, great people, and a lot of lessons learned. Now that classes and finals are mostly behind us, it feels like the perfect time to leave some honest feedback that could help other students next semester.

If you lived off-campus this year, especially if you dealt with a landlord or property company, consider sharing your experience on https://judgemylandlord.com . Good landlords deserve recognition, and bad ones shouldn’t keep getting away with ruining students’ housing situations. Your review could genuinely help another student avoid signing a nightmare lease next year.

And if you haven’t already, take a few minutes to review your professors on https://www.ratemyprofessors.com too. A lot of students rely on those reviews when choosing classes, and honestly, the professor you get can completely change your experience in a course.

We have way more power as students than we think. Sharing honest experiences makes college life more transparent for everyone coming after us.

Hope everyone has an amazing summer, stays safe, and enjoys the break. And congrats again to all the graduating seniors ❤️

Where do postdocs / faculty live?

Hi, I'm a grad student on the east coast starting a postdoc at MSU in the fall. I have never been to East Lansing and I might not be able to visit in person before I rent an apartment, so I am hoping some of you can provide a local perspective on which areas/neighborhoods are commonly inhabited by postdocs, grad students, faculty etc? I'm primarily looking to be relatively close to campus, but I'm not really interested in living near undergrads (no offense). Any insight is appreciated!

Commuter Parking

Okay, this is a rant about commuter parking. Either build something closer to campus or for the love of god let the only bus that goes out there run past 7pm…I think it’s implied that most commuters have a job and if that job is on campus some don’t get done until 8-9pm at night. You’re telling me I have to walk sometimes 30+ minutes to get to my car in the dark?? Because the bus isn’t running and the safe ride options at msu only go to dorms?? I literally have to pay to park the car there and now i have to pay to get back to the car after working a job that’s on campus?!?!? sorry rant over just extremely annoyed

Help Needed: Anonymous Michigan Worker Experience Survey (Student Research Project)

Hi everyone,

I'm a college student interviewing workers in different industries across Michigan to better understand workplace experiences and improve workplace standards.

I've started interviews and gotten a few survey responses, but I'm trying to gather perspectives across industries in Michigan to better understand how experiences differ between workplaces.

If you've worked any job in Michigan, I'd really appreciate it if you could fill out this anonymous form which takes about one minute. I'll be publishing my findings online and using what I learn to advocate for Michigan workers.

Thank you so much to everyone who takes the time to help out!

MSU politics

Listening to the couch and rube podcast, they opened up my mind to how our board of trustees are elected. Gus, in my mind, deserved the 2x salary bump. I think the issues come from the board… can students have a vote on board of trustees? Or do they only have say on the asmsu board? IMHO msu students do not know wtf their board of trustees are

Edit: editing rube’s name and removing my identity. I also want to say some players like fears and Jordan hall should maybe earn more than our prez

MSU just gave Guskiewicz a $1 million raise

Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees voted to raise President Kevin Guskiewicz’s salary by more than $1 million in a special Sunday night meeting.

The move, which is subject to the finalization of an amended employment contract, would raise his salary from $1,029,000 to $2 million and increase an annual unvested employer award he receives from $200,000 to $250,000.

Request - MSU Lacrosse!

Hey spartans!

I have a bit of an odd request. I worked at a summer camp in MI in 2025, met a lot of ppl from MSU, decided that it was my school and started collecting merch. I am now at university in Sydney, Australia and play lacrosse here. I wear a lot of my MSU merch to training and now have a bit of a rep as a state fanf. I'm on the hunt for lacrosse jerseys/merch/training gear. I'd obviously cover any costs associated with it too. If anyone could point me in the right direction or knows anyone who would be willing to sell/send over some stuff that would be super appreciated!

Thanks!

Didnt get student housing as a transfer

Basically, I tried to get student housing, but it just wasn’t possible for me since I am a transfer student.

I did two years of community college and now I really want the full college experience, I am going to be living on campus in a pretty good apartment but I’m not really sure if that’s the same thing. Also, I’ll be 21 and I feel like everyone will already have their friends.

I’m worried that I’m missing out and I won’t make any friends because of this

A lot of things I’ve seen is that people have the best time of their lives living in the dorms and it’s the make or break of the college experience so I feel kind of doomed.

Is this true, does anyone have any advice?

Edit: Im worried i am going into my junior year at 21 and i think i might be too old to go out and party with everyone. I also wanted to join a sorority but i feel that i just look way too old. I feel that i missed out compared to everyone else and its very sad

MSU dorm waitlist as a transfer

Hey I am a transfer student and I’m currently on the msu housing waitlist. I really want to live in a dorm instead of an apartment because I will not have a car and other reasons.

I know housing is limited for transfers, but I was wondering if anyone has been in this situation before. What are the chances of actually getting a dorm from the waitlist? Do spots usually open up over the summer?

I graduated in the early 2010s. Did a lot at MSU go downhill over the past few years?

Looking at the top posts from the past year, it's endless posts about online classes, low-quality food, decaying buildings, no student engagement, and so on. Even RCAH closing their doors.

I wish I could show all of you Yakeley dining, what is available today doesn't even come close. Chandler Crossings used to have tons of restaurants and entertainment too.

I also saw this happen at my grad school (RIT) quite a bit over the past few years.
