Massive Kick & Snare of Old School Industrial

Check out this track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEYnON-uFRE

Listen to that massive kick and snare. I feel like late 80s and early 90s industrial acts were champions of this huge, but also tight, clear and snappy kick and snare drums.

I've been experimenting with compression and EQ, along with my Yamaha RX5 drum machine trying to get close to such a large sound, but no dice.

It could be that my source material (the drum machine) is just not a great starting sound for achieving this amount of massive, but I feel like I'm still not understanding the full picture.

Any ideas of things I should try? I'm using a modern DAW (Reaper).

Yamaha RX7 Digital Rhythm Programmer: Worth It?

Hello,

As I've been exploring making music, I've found I really dig that old school, crunchy, punchy, often times cheesy, 12-bit and 16-bit PCM sound. It is a blast to take these already grimy sounds and pervert them even more. I own a Kawai K1R and it is a pure joy to experiment with.

In regard to drums, I find myself using samples of old drum machines, mostly from the Yamaha RX and Kawai R-50 lines. So, I am wondering if I'd really get a kick out of owning the actual hardware.

I found a Yamaha RX7 for $160, which seems to be a fair price in today's market. What I'm wondering is if anyone of this community who has used thus drum machine could possibly guide me to deciding whether it could be worth the money?

I think I would enjoy the tactile experience of jamming on the machine, messing with the envelope and various parameters (especially pitch, these sounds get so filthy when you bring them down an octave or two). I also have a SP404SX which I think would be a joy to sample into.

I know the answer to these kinds of questions are often very personal. As I'm writing this it seems to me the answer is "yes, it is worth it", but then part of me just thinks, sample all the RX7 hits to the SP404 and be on with it. I guess I can't help but romanticize the actual hardware.

What do you guys think?
