Suggestion: SLO Campus Flagpoles Should Include a YTT Northern Chumash Tribe Flag or Memorial

I think it's important to recognize First Nation/Indigenous/Native American peoples local to the area that have historically been present in the region since time immemorial. A big visible way to do this could be to include some aspect of this in the flagpoles on campus, with the consent/approval and potential collaboration with the tribe of course. I could imagine the argument being made that funds might be better spent towards the tribe's landback campaign rather than a memorial or flag, but I think its worth putting out here for starters/brainstorming.

I know that the YTT(yak titʸu titʸu yak tiłhini) Northern Chumash Tribe has visited campus once before, and I think this project could be a big way to further develop relations and connections between Cuesta and the YTT Northern Chumash Tribe.

I'd be interested to hear the communities' thoughts if people are open to the idea or not, and why? Thanks, cheers, and #landback!

SLO needs an overtly queer bar/club.

I think that an overtly queer bar or club venue would greatly benefit the local economy, community, and nightlife in SLO. I think this would make SLO more of a destination year-round for queer folks, and would extend queer culture to an evergreen status in the region. This would much better serve the local community rather than expecting the queer community to make pilgrimages to LA, SLO, or Fresno for a safe openly queer bar/club experience outside of pride month.

I bring this to attention because I think the lack of such an establishment is continuing to put the overall SLO community at risk.

While I've lived in the SLO area I've observed the presence of a lot more "Downlow" or "DL" queer guys than in SF/LA. While I love how people in SLO seem to have less person-to-person barriers than the big cities, I think its important to address the masking and code-switching at play here within the queer community.

In my opinion, the lack of an overtly out queer establishment in the SLO/805 region endangers the queer community and subjects them to riskier meetups within digital or physical "cruising culture" that substitutes a clean and secure venue for parking lots, gyms, and the woods, usually at night and in public.

Since there is no year-round venue to express themselves without fear of discrimination, SLO is also experiencing a queer-drain of migration to larger urban communities where queer spaces are more available. By establishing a queer club in SLO, there will be less pushing the community away from SLO, and more demand from queer tourists to visit SLO. This would also remedy the toxic masculinity inherent within downlow culture, as queer expression would become more normalized locally and not seen as a foreign thing that only exists in the big cities or during pride month.

While SLO certainly has queer-friendly bars, the bar-scene in SLO does not to my knowledge have an evergreen queer space that is intended to primarily serve as a safe space for queer folks. The addition of such an establishment may/could drive down the demand for cruising culture in the area, drawing men away from public spaces and into a safe private venue.

Thank you for taking the time to read and consider this. I am eager to hear what other queer folks might think about such an idea if its relevant or if SLO is doing okay as is? Cheers!

Was California actually proposed to be named Moctezuma in 1827?

After doing some research into the history of California's flags, I came across a Wikipedia ( I know, not the most reliable source, which is why I want to ask some historian minds ) article claiming the Governor of then Alta California in 1827 proposed to change the name of Alta California to Moctezuma in honor of an Aztec emperor. The text then describes a flag or proposed flag of Moctezuma but there is no image recorded of it.

This is the only mention of the proposal I can find. Wikipedia. sources this informaton from a book "Rosie and the Bear Flag" So I'm unsure where that author got their information, or if there is any other sources to. corroborate/prove this? I haven't found a version of the book online either.

Wikipedia article referenced: Refer to Flag of Moctezuma paragraph.

Thanks. Cheers.

Suggestion: Stop Sign or Roundabout at Santa Rita Safeway Crosswalk

Many of you have probably driven past the flower bouquet memorial tribute on the sidewalk of Santa Rita road across the Safeway plaza, the crosswalk across PetFood Express.

Some of you may have continued to see incidents especially if you frequently used that crosswalk. Incidents such as an oveturned car from a drunk driver early in the morning, or drivers narrowly passing pedestrians despite the introduction of blinking yield signs.

I would like to encourage the community to consider the addition of either a stop sign or roundabout to protect pedestrians and slow down traffic entering and exiting downtown.

At first I thought it may be too disruptive to traffic, but as I continued to experience/observe these incidents at that crosswalk, it stayed on my mind. Also, I eventually came across a lit-up Stop Sign in Livermore shortly after a stoplight intersection that seems like it would be a perfect blueprint to follow/mimic/recreate here.

If drivers can figure things out and if funding is appropriate, I think a roundabout would be a perfect ideal way to slow down traffick and make pedestrian crossing safer, and the center of the roundabout could become a sort of gateway into downtown to slow down traffic as they enter, and slow down traffic as cars leave downtown.

Thanks for reading, if you think this is a relevant idea for the safety of the community's drivers and pedestrians, I'd love to hear feedback. Stay safe out there.

Suggestion/Idea: Renaming the city of Pleasanton to... Pleasonton? Ohlone? Hearst? Thoughts...?

Hi everyone. Something that has been on my mind for a while is the naming of the city of Pleasanton. Throughout living here, I've always recalled hearing remarks about how "pleasanton isn't so pleasant after all" or anything along those lines, every so often. I recall learning that the city is named after a Union general, though it ended up misspelled and uncorrected.

I've also come to learn the existence of at least 3 other Pleasantons in the U.S. which makes me curious about SEO (search engine optimization) ideals for all Pleasantons.

I'm actually surprised to learn that the Pleasanton in Kansas has the same story of misspelling the Union general's name. So, with that historical context in mind, I've been brainstorming some potential what-if re-names of the city.

Pleasonton would be the easiest to distinguish Pleasanton from the other cities and to honor the general that the town was originally named after.

However, if we are considering renaming in general, we can consider a name more appropriate for the local or big-picture history of the area, rather than from a US History perspective. Since CA was mostly removed from the civil war, not to say its not a significant part of California's history with its involvement to the US, but it may be more appropriate to highlight a local name.

Contemporarily, Phoebe Hearst/the Hearst family was a significant contributor to Pleasanton I wonder if Hearst might be a favorable name?

More big picture, the Ohlone tribe is the biggest tribe in the local area, though I'm unsure if the land Pleasanton was on is recorded as being part of Ohlone history. From some brief research it seems that the Pelnen triblet of the Ohlone were local to the modern day Pleasanton-Livermore area. I think there's a lot of potential here to honor First Nations/Native history by renaming Pleasanton to a name more relevant to First Nations/Native American history. Something like the City of Ohlone or the City of Pelnen? Coincidentally Pelnen and Pleasanton both start with a P, so it would be able keep the "ptown" nickname!

I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on the concept of renaming the city or if anyone has any other renaming suggestions, or any feedback on the name ideas here. Take good care out there folx!

Idea/Suggestion: Replace 3 Smokestacks at PowerPlant Site with 3 Redwood Trees

I've had the future of morro bay's skyline on my mind for some time, since learning that the stacks are scheduled for deconstruction.

I know the stacks are a hot topic of debate in the community, and while they do add a historical landmark to the skyline and coast, many may see them as an eyesore next to the rock.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the essence of the stacks could be preserved in the form of three trees native to CA? Maybe palm trees? I'm not sure if growth would be possible in that area, but I'd be interested to hear feedback or to brainstorm the idea before bringing it up to city council. Thanks! Cheers.
