150k Points offer to upgrade my gold charge card
I previously held the platinum card.
I was disappointed by the downgrades that occurred this year and didn't see enough value to renew. Instead of cancelling outright I went for a "soft landing" and downgraded to the gold charge card which was $230 instead of $1450. I did this about 4 months ago.
A couple days ago Amex emailed me an offer of 150k MR point; which at its worst is $750.
Thinking about it; if they simply offered me the 150k back when I downgraded, i probably would've kept my platinum; but here we are.
At this point I'm going to let the offer slide; but if they come back with a 200k point offer then i'd likely take it.
Are these offers common? If so you could potentially game it by downgrading instead of renewing and waiting for the MR point offer to upgrade back.
Edit: It's worth noting that an upgrade offer would only be to people holding a gold (or maybe green) charge card. When i downgraded my platinum, the only cards i could move to were the charge cards. They couldn't downgrade me to an explorer for instance as that's a credit card and is subject to a new application.
