Salomon XT-6 GTX sizing advice

I’m driving myself crazy over this and would really appreciate some advice from people who own the XT-6 GTX.

I measured my feet recently and they’re roughly:
Left foot: UK 4
Right foot: UK 4.5

I’ve always thought I was size 5, so buy UK 5.5 in most trainers and have done for years, but after measuring my feet I thought maybe I’d been sizing too big. I tried on a UK 5 in-store, they felt okay standing around, so I ordered the XT-6 Gore-Tex in a UK 5.

Unfortunately, once I actually started walking in them, they felt completely different. The heel is locked in perfectly and the rest of the shoe is really comfortable, but the toe box feels incredibly tight and my toes hit the front of the shoe when I walk. Standing still, I have about a thumb’s width of space in front of my toes, so I was convinced the sizing was right, but as soon as I walk my toes make contact with the front. I never wear them because they’re so uncomfortable.

It’s been a couple of months so it’s too late to return or exchange them so I’m going to buy another pair but I really want to get it right this time!

I’ve been reading reviews and Reddit threads and now I’m even more confused because loads of people seem to say the XT-6 runs large and they sized down, whereas my experience has been the complete opposite.

If you were in my position, would you:
Go for a UK 5.5?
Go straight to a UK 6?

I don’t want the hassle of ordering both to try out either as they’re just too expensive for me to be down £400!

For anyone who sized up, did it make the shoe feel too long, or did it just give you the extra toe room you needed?

Thanks in advance - I’m trying to avoid making another expensive mistake!
