Odd shaped layout/poor designed space? Need help!

Just moved in and the dining room, breakfast “nook”, and living room are meshed together in one giant space with a carpet.

Something feels odd about it, but I can’t figure out exactly what or what to do about it (will fixing one thing do it or do I need to do multiple things). I plan to get all recessed lighting and have more lights placed since some areas are darker than others. Ideally I’d like the place to feel cozy.

How to update my kitchen without replacing everything?

What can I do to update it or make it feel more “cozy” (if that’s even possible) without having to replace everything or break the bank? Replacing the dishwasher, removing the metal plate above the stove, and replacing the hood vent are the first things I’m doing. The refrigerator and stove are white. I’d eventually like all the appliances to be the same color. Are white appliances part of the problem?

Also any ideas on what to replace the metal plate with? What to do with the cabinets? Color/design suggestions are also appreciated! Thank you!
