Tyre Pressures
Wonder if anyone could help give some advice on what tyre pressure to run on heavier than normal vehicles when off-roading.
I’m currently on a lap in a 78 series, GVM upgrade and around 3,500-3,700kg. The rear end feels like it is taking the brunt of the weight and it’s really noticeable on the rear tyres. The tyres are Falken wildpeak At3w, 265/75/16R.
I have found on sealed roads I need to be sitting around 60-65psi and even then the tyre still flattens out a bit along the contact point with the ground. I have been trying to find some chalk to do the proper test but still haven’t found a shop that sells it. Anyway, this isn’t my main issue.
I am mostly struggling to figure out my tyre pressures when off-roading. I have researched suggested tyre pressures for different off-road conditions and while they seem to be about right for the fronts, the rear tyres bag out so much more.
To try and counter this I usually run the rears 5-10psi higher (they still bag out way more) but I am not sure if this is the correct thing to do.
Should I be looking at the tyre visually to see where it should be and adjust the pressures this way, or just stick with recommended pressures that I have read online?
I am not sure if having the fronts at 22psi for rough rocky terrain and the rears sitting at 28psi is right. Can I safely go higher to maintain a bit more clearance?
Is the tyre an issue? Should I have looked for a tyre with a stronger tyre wall to help maintain the shape under the extra weight?
