Can multi-channel audio setup survive an attic room? Tested in mine for a week (Tried Sound Suite and Q990D)

Immersive Suite 5 Comparison and First Impressions

LG invited me to their event in Frankfurt back in March and afterwards sent me the Immersive Suite 5 Pro, asking me to share my impressions. Everything you read below is entirely my own opinion. I've been living with it for a week in an attic room, running a PS5 and an Apple TV into an LG G6, and until now my reference was a Samsung Q990D.

https://preview.redd.it/tloh704j8akh1.jpg?width=8064&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d5b290ca93a75d3d581f7b47bd86b57ed2b09bb

Setting Up a Multi-Channel Home Theater System

My room is an attic and it isn't square, which on paper is the worst possible case for a system that bounces sound off walls and ceiling. Two things mattered more than I expected:

Network: The app setup is easy, but I had to fall back to the 2.4 GHz band because my 5 GHz network runs on a DFS channel and the system won't connect to it. Worth checking your router before you start. Since everything leans on WiFi and my router is on the first floor while the system is upstairs, I expected dropouts, in a week I've had none.

Passthrough: This is the tip I'd give anyone buying this system. At first I was genuinely disappointed by the subwoofer: even at maximum level it was quiet, and I blamed the shape of the room. Then I turned on Passthrough on the TV and it became a different product. For the first time ever with a sound system, I had to turn the subwoofer down. The same applied to Atmos, which was switched off on my Apple TV and was the real reason bass was so thin on some content. Go through every setting on every device before you judge the sound.

Placement: The subwoofer sits behind me instead of next to the TV, because my neighbour lives directly below that part of the room and bass travels through a floor far more easily than through a wall. One M5 is on the nightstand right next to me; the other is on a shelf about four metres away on my left. Then I ran the Dolby Atmos FlexConnect calibration, and this is where the system earns its money as a multi-channel home theater system.

https://preview.redd.it/2p17ieop8akh1.jpg?width=602&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b392aa83d891fbe4d960dfc06890eb621260f59b

Sound

In Standard mode I never found dialogue too quiet, which is contrary to what several reviews have said. With AI Sound voices become noticeably clearer, and how that clarity sits depends a lot on the mix of whatever you're watching. With some content the voice takes on a bigger, more open character, closer to a real cinema room, and whether I liked that or not changed from title to title. In games I end up switching: Ghost of Yotei works flawlessly with AI Sound, while in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth I preferred Standard for the dialogue. For movies I leave AI Sound on, because I love how wide everything becomes. I think of Standard as the equivalent of Filmmaker Mode on a TV, closer to what the creator intended. If I could ask for one thing in a future update, it would be a finer control over how much AI Sound is applied to the centre channel, so I could tune it per title instead of switching modes.

You can listen to the system in full action with AI Sound here: https://youtu.be/rTwyBcTPWgI?is=AOTxQVPlgEjp-j9s

FlexConnect compensates for the four-meter gap between my two M5s so well that I genuinely don't perceive one side as further away. The sound arrives evenly from both. On every other system I've owned, building that dome depended on me and a manual calibration. Here you set it and forget it. I also tested whether it distinguishes height by putting one M5 on top of a closet, roughly 1.80 m up and three meters away. In my room I couldn't pick out a clear difference from having it lower down, but that was one informal test in one position, so I wouldn't read much into it. I assume It corrects for distance, not elevation.

https://preview.redd.it/sm826mvr9akh1.jpg?width=6048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b373c56191b730a26be850f98d8f06a3ba8248c6

Even with the subwoofer behind my head, the bass reads as coming from the TV and the soundbar. That's by design and worth clarifying, because I misread it at first. FlexConnect doesn't measure or identify where the subwoofer is. Bass is non-directional, so the sub can go wherever it fits best in your room, and the subwoofer icon you see on the left during the setup only means it's connected, it isn't telling you where it’s placed. In practice the low end feels like it comes from everywhere and anchors to the front, which is exactly what you want.

Despite the room shape, I do get sound from above, not directly overhead, more from the corner. The fireworks in the opening minutes of F1: The Movie were the clearest example.

Combinations

I tried the system in stages, which is also how I'd recommend buying it.

W7 subwoofer + LG TV: If you're building slowly, start here. Connected to a 2025 or 2026 LG TV, the subwoofer lifts the TV's own sound considerably. The one limitation, you can't control subwoofer volume until the H7 soundbar is in the chain.

Stereo Suite 5 (2 × M5): Either the next step or an equally good first one. The M5 is the cheapest speaker in the Sound Suite family and still adds weight to the overall sound. What impressed me is that even when it's physically impossible for sound to reach me from behind, the pair still does a convincing job of placing it there.

Cinema Suite (H7 + W7): The point where bass becomes a real subwoofer. It got powerful enough that the stand under my TV started rattling, which is the second reason the sub ended up behind me. The soundbar widens the front stage noticeably, especially with AI Sound, even in a non-square room.

Full Immersive Suite 5 Pro: For home theater specifically, this is the one. The gap between Cinema Suite and the full system isn't subtle. The rears and the height channels are what turn it from a very good soundbar setup into an actual multichannel room. It's also the first time I've stopped caring whether a film or game is 5.1 or Atmos. I used to think Atmos was mostly marketing, and for years a good 5.1 mix beat a poor Atmos one. That's no longer true here.

Compared to other setups I've used

Samsung Q990D. The Q990D was my reference multi-channel home theater system and I always ran it in Adaptive mode. In pure sound quality the two are very close, expect for the rear speakers on the Q990D, which are worse. Where the LG pulls ahead is bass quality and the rear channels. The subwoofer is tighter and more controlled rather than just louder, and the M5s disappear into the room in a way the Samsung's rears never did. If the M5 already does this, I'd expect the M7 to widen that gap further, though I haven't tested it myself.

M5 vs. HomePod Mini vs. Beats Pill. Out of curiosity I also compared a single M5 against a HomePod Mini and a Beats Pill across three tracks, since those are the small speakers most people will actually have at home.

I recorded the comparison here: https://youtu.be/m8_24Ahuta4?is=zxmARS4rpcuiggHl (worth listening on headphones). It's a useful reference point for what the M5 is doing on its own, before FlexConnect turns it into a surround channel.

A note on latency

In the first hours I noticed a small delay, and after a few hours of use I stopped registering it entirely. Still, I wanted to put a number on it instead of guessing, so I used the calibration tool in Rock Band 4, which exists precisely to compensate for this.

https://preview.redd.it/lsayv0ivdakh1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c564bbffa4df8e8ca81a19e73291cd419695364

The interesting part is that the result changed with the PS5's audio output. With Atmos it reported 314 ms, switching the PS5 to PCM it dropped to 220 ms.

https://preview.redd.it/898ps78xdakh1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=22ad79147149d51121fd1785956c496807319298

I wouldn't take either number too literally, though. That calibration is manual, you tap along to a beat, so there's a human factor baked into the result, and it measures the full round trip of the whole chain: the PS5's output, the TV's own picture and audio processing and the wireless link, not the soundbar on its own. The same screen makes that point by itself, it also reports a separate video calibration of 54 ms, which is the TV's picture processing and has nothing to do with the audio system. I heard that LG's internal measurements come out lower than what I got, and given how this is measured at home, that makes sense to me.

The practical impact depends on what you're doing. Games that let you calibrate, rhythm games above all, handle it fine once you've run the setup, and most streaming apps correct lip sync automatically. For everything else, I adapted within a few hours and stopped noticing it. Still, if you play competitively or you're particularly sensitive to sync, switch to PCM and run your own calibration when you set the system up

Verdict
When I ask myself, "Which multi-channel audio setup is best?" this is the answer I keep coming back to. For a first attempt at this technology, LG got the important part right: the multi-channel home theater experience survives a bad room. It is not a plug-and-play system, though, it needs real setting-up, and my worry is that people who skip that step (Passthrough, Atmos, calibration) will end up writing the mixed comments you sometimes see. Get the settings right and this is the best setup I've had at home.

LG OLED G6 Review: New Apartment and Somehow It Looks Even Better — Brightness, Reflection Free & Dolby Vision

Two months ago LG sent me a 55" OLED G6 to test and share my honest opinion. You can read my first impressions here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/LG_UserHub/comments/1tp322i/first_impressions_55_lg_oled_g6_tv_comparison/

Since then I've moved to a new apartment, and the change of environment shifted my perspective on this TV enough that I wanted to write a follow-up.

https://preview.redd.it/tbx6plaunxjh1.jpg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3ffb99191601be004e9b128eb59d8b1eea94346e

In my old place, the TV sat about 2m from the couch, directly in front of a huge window. That was never really a problem. Now it's in the bedroom, roughly 3m away, with a small window in front of it but at a 45° angle. I might be crazy, but that extra meter made the TV even better. At this distance I can take in the whole image at once instead of scanning across it.

The window angle does mean reflections are visible, and you can clearly see it on the video I posted. I picked this scene on purpose, with Dolby Vision or HDR, the highlights get so bright that they easily overpower the reflection itself. So if reflections are what's holding you back, keep in mind you'll really only notice them in dark scenes.

https://youtu.be/D5ibC6aIdO4

I keep Dynamic Tone Mapping enabled all the time and it does an amazing job, especially with games that peak at only 1,000 nits. Even with content that can go higher I just leave it on. I'm honestly too lazy to keep switching modes, and it looks impressive either way.

https://preview.redd.it/ta43w5w1qxjh1.jpg?width=953&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d781fcd65cd3b212a2abc98370349a52fe79f310

Something I didn't expect is what the brightness does to colors. Even with color saturation left at 50, everything feels like it has more depth, especially in HDR and Dolby Vision. It's most obvious in Disney movies, where there's already a lot of color to begin with and it all just feels more alive, without ever looking washed out or oversaturated. I've noticed the same thing in HDR games, when there are highlights in certain areas of the image, it makes the whole thing look sharper than usual.

I had a friend over to try the TV as well. We started with Demon Slayer on Crunchyroll and he said the blacks were so perfect that every scene looked like a printed poster instead of a TV. Then we put on F1 The Movie, and that's where he got really impressed by the range of brightness in that film, he didn't even know something like that existed. During the first race scene he kept saying it looked like watching a movie in 3D. And that's across a whole film, not just one scene, it never dips or gets tiring.

https://preview.redd.it/hckd35y0oxjh1.png?width=2884&format=png&auto=webp&s=4d22144536e5f442236efdc12c188ece50d9892a

That 3D thing is something I've been paying attention to lately. Back when I was using the Samsung S90D I could only watch in HDR, so I never really cared whether something was HDR or Dolby Vision, to me it was all the same. Now I notice the difference right away. HDR content feels a bit flat, almost boring in comparison. With Dolby Vision the image has more depth, or better said, a better separation between objects, whether it's the people or whatever is supposed to be the main thing in the scene. You can actually see what I mean in the video from my first post, both the jump in brightness and that separation. And that's the part that convinced me, the image looking 3D without actually being 3D only happens to me with Dolby Vision content, which is why it's the mode I go for whenever it's available.

The only time the image feels "too bright" is when I play SDR content in Dolby Vision from my Apple TV. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't look bad at all, but at night it can be a little too much. My fix was to set the Apple TV to SDR with Match Dynamic Range enabled, so it only switches to HDR or Dolby Vision when the content actually calls for it.

Conclusion

If you're torn between Samsung's flagship and the G6, I think it comes down to two things, reflection handling and Dolby Vision. Going back to my Samsung S90D, I can clearly tell it runs out of brightness in certain scenes; with the G6 I've never had that feeling. I'd love to compare it against a flagship Sony, but they're not that popular here in Germany, so I haven't had the chance to see Sony's newer technology in person.

At this point it's less about the TV and more about how the content is mastered, since not much out there goes beyond 1,000 nits. It's a bit like owning a Ferrari and only ever driving it on a road with a 100 km/h speed limit.

Lower frame rate on 24fps content + LG G6

I have a problem since my 55” LG G6 TV updated yesterday. I’ve tested different content, and it seems this only happens with 24 fps content, as shown in the video.

Every couple of seconds, it looks like the frame rate drops to about half. I tested the exact same content on my PS5, and it doesn’t happen there.

Please help!!!!

First Impressions: 55" LG OLED G6 TV | Comparison with iPad Pro M4, PS5 & Philips Hue

Hi everyone, I am Felix, and LG sent me an LG G6 55” so I could review it. This is not a paid promotion, so all my comments are completely objective.

I thought that making a video might be more helpful to really understand the comparison I wanted to make. So feel free to either watch the video or read this post, it’s exactly the same information.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7m9pFb36BY

------------------------------------------------------------------

I am not a TV expert at all. I just like technology, and I want to show you a first impression from the point of view of a regular person. But honestly, what can I say, this TV is incredible. Still, let us start from the beginning.

This is the version with the stand, model OLED55G69LS, and there is also a wall mounted version, OLED55G67LW. That does not mean you cannot mount this one on the wall. One thing I had not seen on other TVs is that you can adjust the height in two different positions, which is great if you have a soundbar and do not want it to block the lower part of the screen.

https://preview.redd.it/zkjzy7y43o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=3f349872f59065367bf9055c33fe040077db8a8c

In my case, I am using the lower position. This allows me to place my Apple TV perfectly, without leaving a huge gap, so everything looks fairly clean and elegant.

https://preview.redd.it/k1lmlnp53o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=96c5e241635e8391516fb8c24105d26bcc4d9abd

We should forget about ultra thin OLEDs if we want maximum brightness. This year the TV is noticeably thicker, but that is probably necessary to fit the new panel and to dissipate heat properly.

https://preview.redd.it/odzfcwe63o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=19fc38e967561f02eec26c950ca21cf428a65b87

On the back, we have several covers to hide and guide the cables. This is a premium television, so everything is meant to look clean and seamless. The back itself is plastic, but the base is made of a solid and heavy material that adds weight and gives it a premium feel.

https://preview.redd.it/f3eb6m673o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=4bad10fd50c2a083d6ff581902e5f0cea710ab90

https://preview.redd.it/j44ptmz73o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=af0e50c85269ce650c569eb4e0fc90330d2cc097

As you can see, I have Philips Hue lights installed, but I will talk about that later. One thing to keep in mind is that the lights run over the cable covers, so if you want to remove the covers, you also need to remove the lights.

Now let us talk about reflections. I currently live in Germany, so having a sunny day is quite rare. However, I do have a window directly behind my couch that shines straight onto the TV.

https://preview.redd.it/1nyf72093o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=1add428f826fb8c54491caad404e9921ea15376c

The screen is still glossy, but it has a coating that does not eliminate reflections one hundred percent. That said, if we compare it to my 11” iPad Pro M4, the difference is very noticeable. If you look closely, the reflections have a slightly purple tint.

https://preview.redd.it/gzg4h2v93o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=f6e63f369b2afa16ec8f598dab3e55c72e34b261

Once you turn the TV on, reflections almost completely disappear. The TV is so bright that before, I had to close the curtains to play games or watch TV, but now I do not need to do that anymore. Of course, reflections can still appear in very dark scenes, but they are not distracting.

Let us compare image quality and brightness against my iPad Pro. Why this device? Because I honestly think it is one of the best consumer displays on the market right now. It is the screen I use the most in my daily life, and I am very used to its colors. On top of that, it makes sense as a comparison because both displays use Tandem OLED technology.

The iPad Pro claims a maximum HDR brightness of 1600 nits, while the G6, according to other reviews, has reached almost 2500 nits in a ten percent window. How does that translate to real life?

I tested different picture modes to get an image as close as possible to my iPad, and the mode that came closest was Dynamic mode with Dolby Vision enabled, with a few adjustments that I made and that I am showing here.

https://preview.redd.it/e0qevqya3o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=9a0c0e2e33b4a9e2ca707b44cf537719ee9a296f

https://preview.redd.it/7u2ewfkb3o3h1.png?width=744&format=png&auto=webp&s=3178b8a326c4fd9555aa28c1bb755486b267cc9a

The purists will probably say, “Felix, that is an abomination. That is not how the director intended you to watch the content”. And I know, I know. But if you buy a TV, it is to enjoy it the way you like, and this mode, matched to my iPad Pro colors, is the one I personally enjoy the most.

In this first comparison, we see the same scene in Dolby Vision on both the G6 and the iPad, versus standard HDR, all in Dynamic mode directly from my Apple TV 2022. In Dolby Vision, the image looks almost identical, but the highlights are clearly brighter on the G6.

https://preview.redd.it/uag8z9oc3o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=3961df073d39b312675efaa18c492eb90c1c4cba

When looking at standard HDR, in person it feels like a mix between Filmmaker mode and very bright highlights. I think it is a great option for people who do not want to be blinded by excessive brightness at night. You may notice some overexposed areas in the video, but that is due to how the camera captures the image, not how it looks in real life.

Now we compare Filmmaker mode in Dolby Vision against the iPad. In the video, you can see that the G6 looks dimmer, especially because the iPad tends to overexpose. But in person, the G6 looks even darker, and honestly, I do not like it.

https://preview.redd.it/x9441akd3o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=aaf4d6ee8a1c220945dbb5fc8a4fb0c928a1ab87

The only extremely bright area in this scene when using Filmmaker mode is the flame, which makes sense and feels more realistic. Because of that, it draws much more attention.

In the next image, I show how reflections behave at night, using only indirect lighting, like this Govee lamp.

https://preview.redd.it/r8757uee3o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=3af6b6b382fde6ddbe5361774591627d44c23674

For gaming, I am comparing it using my PS5 in HDR mode, duplicating the image with the PlayStation app, which also supports HDR.

With real content, you only notice reflections if you actively look for them. As soon as you focus on the image, they completely disappear thanks to the brightness of the screen. I am using Game Optimiser with the following settings.

https://preview.redd.it/w3puv78f3o3h1.png?width=1028&format=png&auto=webp&s=66929c04d75a90885fd121815474e8859f491c7e

Here, the G6 feels very similar to my iPad display, but with more brightness where it actually matters. Because of that, the image feels more immersive and has more depth.

https://preview.redd.it/hvqv51zf3o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=e1e389b3120d39c36fb62b7529987f8ca6f138d5

https://preview.redd.it/kxqa6llj3o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=90bde59f368296d79e30359aa3024e8f3c43beff

Next, we move on to a comparison with all lights turned off, and also how the displays behave when showing a full white image in HDR. This is the only situation where the iPad Pro still beats the G6, since it maintains a brighter full screen image. However, as soon as we move to smaller areas that require high brightness, the G6 clearly wins.

https://preview.redd.it/wtmnfp6k3o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=c7b41ea24b29749fd42816061a2ef07939aff8d5

https://preview.redd.it/kogmgftk3o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=e836c50dbb25832b9e6808f56d185058b5e8dd80

In this Ratchet and Clank comparison, the difference in brightness is not huge, but you can clearly see how the G6 handles contrast much better. The image looks more punchy and deeper, while the iPad looks a bit flatter in comparison.

https://preview.redd.it/ceg102wl3o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=1eca3714d37cc909705bf7f0420d41980e4ae4bd

Finally, I want to show how the Philips Hue lights work with the native synchronization through the Hue app. It works perfectly. So far, I have had zero issues, not even in VRR mode. With my Samsung S90D, I did have problems, with the lights becoming erratic and showing flickering. That does not happen here at all, and transitions are smooth and fluid.

https://preview.redd.it/z3dzenjm3o3h1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=37e3c88aed27c9cd22d926579beb805a29dff257

In conclusion, I could not be happier with this LG G6. It is basically an iPad Pro M4, but much bigger and on steroids. It has become my favorite TV of all time. Back in the day I made the same comparison with the S90D and against the iPad, it felt it needed a bit of extra brightness to come close.

If you have any suggestions on how to further improve the image, increase brightness, or get the most out of everything this TV can do, leave them in the comments. I will also be more than happy to answer all your questions.

See you next time.

The screen is still glossy, but it has a coating that does not eliminate reflections one hundred percent. That said, if we compare it to my 11” iPad Pro M4, the difference is very noticeable. If you look closely, the reflections have a slightly purple tint.

The only extremely bright area in this scene when using Filmmaker mode is the flame, which makes sense and feels more realistic. Because of that, it draws much more attention.

In the next image, I show how reflections behave at night, using only indirect lighting, like this Govee lamp.

Here, the G6 feels very similar to my iPad display, but with more brightness where it actually matters. Because of that, the image feels more immersive and has more depth.

In this Ratchet and Clank comparison, the difference in brightness is not huge, but you can clearly see how the G6 handles contrast much better. The image looks more punchy and deeper, while the iPad looks a bit flatter in comparison.

https://preview.redd.it/eo50c5icvn3h1.png?width=3588&format=png&auto=webp&s=20de3e3f87b48c4975f8a423f0b31739218f170b
