How to Sell Organic Agriculture Produce in Tier II Cities
Looking for advice on finding fruit distributors/wholesale buyers for a small orchard in Darjeeling
I have a small 3-acre farm in Darjeeling with an orchard growing different seasonal fruits, including:
- 🍊 Oranges
- Passion fruit
- Dragon Fruit
- Guava
- Wild Avocado
- Indian Butter Tree Fruit
- Persimmon
- Hog Plum
My aim is to sell the produce throughout the year as different fruits come into season, rather than relying only on local customers.
The main challenge is that I have a limited personal customer network, and I’m not in a position to regularly go to local haat/bazaars myself to sell the produce.
I’m therefore looking for advice on how to connect directly with reliable wholesalers, distributors, fruit traders, retailers, hotels, or processors, particularly around Darjeeling, Siliguri and North Bengal.
For those who have experience with this:
- What is the best way to approach fruit distributors/wholesalers?
- Are there specific markets, associations, FPOs or platforms I should contact?
- Do wholesalers generally collect produce directly from the farm, or would I need to transport it to Siliguri?
- How do you normally negotiate pricing and quantities with distributors?
- Are there any reliable buyers or contacts you would recommend?
I’m not looking to sell a few boxes directly to consumers. I’m trying to establish a regular wholesale/distribution channel for the orchard.
Any practical advice from farmers, growers, traders, or people familiar with the Darjeeling/Siliguri fruit market would be greatly appreciated.

Just a heads up for anyone in Nepal who regularly eats instant noodles:
The Nepal Department of Food Technology and Quality Control has reportedly ordered a recall of a specific batch of Current Noodles (Batch 04A) after lab testing found it did not meet food quality standards.https://english.insurancekhabar.com/govt-orders-recall-of-current-noodles-from-market-after-substandard-2/
Now the manufacturer’s explanation is reportedly that the issue happened because of extreme sun heat, and people are simply expected to believe that.

त्यसपछि मैले भनेँ– ‘म तपाईंको फ्यान भएकाले मेरो तर्फबाट सहयोग गर्छु।’ यो कुरा मैले मेरो परिवारलाई समेत भनेको थिइनँ। म पब्लिसिटी गर्दिनँ। मेरो सानो सहयोगले खेलाडी फेरि तन्दुरुस्त भएर देशको नाम कमाउँछ भने त्यो नै ठूलो कुरा हो।मैले राजनीतिका हिसाबले सोचेर सहयोग गरेको होइन, किनकि त्यसबाट मैले भोट पाउँदिनँ। म जहिले पनि मानवताको हिसाबले काम गर्छु।
