disability compounding arfid

hello gang. so i have sensory sensitivities/limited variety (as well as food allergies because fuck me lol) but, more importantly, i have lack of interest arfid and it’s sort or ruining my life a little bit

last year (almost exactly a year ago, wow) i became physically disabled, and ended up trapped in an apartment lease where the whole damn apartment is inaccessible to me. can’t even leave without needing to be carried down stairs. it’s super. i’m looking into moving out soon (out by september, fingers crossed) which is really exciting.

anyhow. point is, i can’t navigate my kitchen at all. there’s too much stuff in my way/on the floor, half of the shit in the apartment is on high shelves/cabinets or in a pantry i can’t even reach, reaching into the fridge from my wheelchair is a pain because the door doesn‘t open all the way. i can barely even reach my microwave. which means…i don’t bother. why the fuck would i inconvenience myself for something i don’t want to do? i’ve been trying to eat but nothing’s working for me. not really asking for advice or anything (once i get the hell out of dodge i have like six million doctors i need to contact, and i can’t really “fix” it right now anyway), just mostly bitching.

it’s making my depression and fatigue worse, i think. can’t sleep, my hair’s fuckin falling out, the whole works. clothes don’t fit, etc. i used to be decent at keeping a consistent weight but now i just can’t. hoping that when i move into a new place i’ll be able to keep up with eating again. thanks for reading :’)

how do yall handle phone calls??

hi gang. i figured someone here would have some input on this :’) for the record, i dislike the term “non-speaking”; i’m a mute individual that uses alt methods of speaking (asl and aac), lol. just hate leaving my flair empty and i’m pedantic.

not the point. how the fuck do yall do phone calls? i typically use HCO (hearing carryover) through my state’s 711 relay but it’s godawful. sometimes the operators act like it’s their first day on earth, the typing gets garbled (how???), often when the call connects i have the potential to be hung up on or not spoken to directly.

i hated phone calls when i could speak and now i avoid them as much as possible, but its frequently a necessary evil. i used to bully my roommate into doing my phone calls for me but they hate it more than i do. ive seen some deaf people suggest a type of video calling using asl but my asl is not THAT great compared to how fast i can type.

is this just a problem forever now? what in tarnation. it’s so annoying

incorrect diagnosis lol

hello gang. so i’m mute via acquired apraxia of speech and its severe enough that i cant speak coherently at all. my brain has no fucking idea what my mouth wants to do basically, lol. my motor planning and ability to produce accurate sound is washed.

my doctor put me down as having “selective mutism” recently, which is…not correct, obviously lmao. i dont even know how to go about correcting her. i have paperwork somewhere about it? man idk.

selective mutism is a very real disorder but I DONT HAVE IT 😭 mostly just wanted to complain lol

power assist options for a person who uses asl

hi hi! so im looking into getting a custom chair finally (been stuck in a standard hospital chair due to health issues, ironically) and i will need a power assist due to fatigue. i’m not getting a power chair because of a few reasons so please dont suggest one lmao

im aware that this is potentially a strange question, but i’m mute. i use both an AAC app on my phone and asl to communicate. the amount of times i veer off course or stop to speak is comical. i dislike being completely silent while im, uh, walking with someone lol

ive seen a power assist around that only require using one hand, which would free up my other hand to be able to speak, but are they any good? should i bother looking into this? anyone else have similar experiences (of needing a hand free in a manual)?

i‘ve seen the e-fix but dont know if there are any others similar lol. let me know?
