Should we just begin again?

My son and I started a co-op game together recently, just on normal level, as we don't want anything too intense. However, whether we just picked the wrong place to set up a base (a small hill above the sea on the southern end of the map, with a tree at the end), or what, we aren't sure, but from day one we've basically been besieged by cannibals, and now the massive, multi-legged abominations are attacking us daily. We can't chop trees or anything without them and a small group of their more agile pals turning up and trying (often succeeding) to kill us.

For avoidance of doubt, while we wanted some engagement with the cannibals, this is a LOT. We usually always play games on normal and it's never this full-on from the get go.

It's really affecting our enjoyment of the game, we are trying after having done a fair bit of exploring, to build a cabin, and it's taking so long.

So, are we done, should we just start over and pick a different place, or explore less first before we start building? I had a thought maybe that was the reason. Is it just going to continue to be constant attacks, or is there something we can do to help stop them coming back all the time?

Any constructive feedback would be really appreciated, thank you to anyone who replies in advance.
