Ditched my rigid printed baseplates for an injection molded TPE version

Ditched my rigid printed baseplates for an injection molded TPE version

Been running rigid printed baseplates for a while, but wanted to try something different. I made a mold and injection molded a flexible TPE version instead of printing it. What I wanted to solve was the first layer issues that come with printing baseplates, and the time spent designing a custom size for every new drawer.

The TPE material means I can just cut them with scissors instead of modeling a custom size. Gif above is one getting trimmed and set into place. A side effect of the TPE material choice is that the baseplate grips the drawer and the bins don’t slide around.

Curious if warping or cracked baseplates has actually been a problem for anyone else here, or if that's mostly a non-issue now with a good printer/settings. Also open to hearing what people think of the scissors-trim approach versus modeling a custom size.

How to add a decorative texture layer to 3D prints without exposing all infill using a mesh modifier trick

Been experimenting with a top surface technique that's a bit different from the standard exposed infill approach. Instead of removing the top layers entirely, I'm using a modifier mesh to add a single decorative infill layer on top of an otherwise fully solid part. The structure underneath stays intact, the texture is purely cosmetic.

Posted the result a few days ago over in r/gridfinity and got some questions about how it's done, so I put together a full walkthrough video.

Covers the modifier mesh setup, layer preview so you can see exactly what's happening, and a few different infill patterns and how they look as a surface finish.

Two methods are shown in the video, along with how to use CNCKitchen tool, Bump mesh, to make texture on the outside of parts.

Files are free on MakerWorld and Printables if you want to print the bin from the video. More details at Youtube.

Made a custom bin for my 1" Starrett mic, tried 3 different top textures

Wanted something that actually fit my 1" Starrett mic and matched it for once instead of just tossing it in a generic bin. Built this around the mic and a small wrench, then played around with three different top surface finishes to see what looked/felt best.

Two have a textured finish, one matches the rest of the print. The texture isn't usual fully exposed infill. it's a different technique I've been experimenting with that keeps the part fully solid top layer underneath.

Curious which finish people like best, and happy to share more details on how it's done if there's interest. I might put together a quick video on it.

What's everyone else doing for finishing on display/tool bins like this?

Made a Gridfinity bin for the Pittsburgh Pro mini screwdriver set (item 97517) so I could ditch the original case

The case that comes with the Pittsburgh Pro 30-piece mini screwdriver set takes up way more drawer space than the tools actually need. I Designed a 1×3 Gridfinity bin that holds the driver, tweezers, and all the bits. No supports needed, fits the set perfectly.

I'm much happier that I now have these tools in my main toolbox rather than needing to look for the sent when I need it.

Free file in the comments if anyone wants to print one.

Anyone else use Gridfinity in their toolbox drawers? Curious if this community has gotten into it or if it's mostly a 3D printing crowd thing.

Designed a Gridfinity bin for the Harbor Freight mini screwdriver set (item 97517)

The original case for this set takes up way more drawer space than the tools actually need. Designed a 1×3 Gridfinity bin that holds the handle and all three bit rails in one spot. No supports needed, fits the set perfectly.

This is a repost with the images.
