New Night Shift Leader queries
I have come externally, and just finished my first week.
Are these things normal?
Haven’t met my Team Manager yet, but the Shift Leader that I was with left me on BWS to figure it out. I had a 20 minute walk around the store and shown where things are then I was left on my own. From the other retailers I’ve worked at, I’ve never seen someone just pushed and left to figure things out.
Staff leaving mess for management to clear. I’m aware that Tesco do not pay if you stay an extra half an hour past your shift, so I do not begrudge anyone doing so - however is it the norm for staff to leave it to me and the other shift lead to tidy up their cardboard cages and push their unworked / back stock out to the warehouse?
Is it normal for the morning manager to come in and talk down to the night managers? Obviously it shouldn’t, but I’ve only had 3 shifts so far and I’ve been told that I need to get the shop floor in a way better state than I’ve been leaving it, usually with a remark that I haven’t worked hard enough
At interview it was for a Days position, the SM apologised and said that she’s filled it with a Night SL who wanted to come on days, and I didn’t really mind at all, more pay after all. I also verbally agreed I cannot stay past 7.25ish most mornings, as I have personal family commitments in the morning, SM agreed that’s fine. I haven’t met the night TM yet as he’s on holiday, would this get any friction at all between the team?
From night shifts in other retails, namely a German one, I was chastised if delivery is left (it all had to be done no matter what, the bonus was they’d pay you for every minute worked), here I’ve found you can leave stock over for the morning team, but backstocks are not being worked because of that therefore it’s a vicious cycle. I assume this is because of staffing cuts, what would you guys recommend I speak to the TM or SM about fixing that ? Or is it one of those things that is out of my control?
sorry for the long post!
