I am not a big orchid person, but I do very much appreciate the dead, sick, and dying ones I can save from Lowe’s. However, these are my absolute favorites. This is the Epidendrum magnoliae, the green-fly orchid; it grows in the crooks and on the limbs of my absolute favorite plant, the Magnolia grandiflora (Southern Magnolia), in addition to Quercus virginiana (Live Oak).
She grows as far south as my home town in central Florida, up to about the fall line in Georgia (where we’ve lived for years); to that, she is an amazing species and learning to care for them has been extremely rewarding and gratifying.
Weeelp, I did it. Brought this little one back from Lowe’s dead, sick, and dying section. Found her on the ground with white roots and a small patch of green. The rest was yellow and dead. The employee just threw it on top of some of the other dead, sick, and dying plants I had.
Does anyone have any cool native orchids you want to share? Pic rel. is Epidendrum magnoliae, Green Fly Orchid. I came across some in the wild recently on a magnolia tree, and I’ve been stuck in that rabbit hole ever since.
Also iNat is worth its weight in gold.
