Book bind glue on page fix?

Got this hard cover version of Arkham asylum and I haven't read it yet because the pages are glued together near the spine really bad in some spots. If I just pull the pages apart they tear on one side or both so I need a way to dissolve the glue just in these spots or separate the pages and scrape off the glue without tearing the pages or damaging the bind of the book. Is this just a cheaply made edition of this book? Or maybe the previous owner left it somewhere hot and the glue melted and seeped into the pages a bit. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Is acetone okay to use? I was using a guitar pick to just separate the pages and that seemed to be working but the glue is still there and I don't want to get too close and accidentally separate the pages entirely.
