Changes to Smart Launcher Translations

For more than 10 years, we have used Crowdin to manage Smart Launcher translations.

During this time, hundreds of volunteers from our community helped us translate Smart Launcher into more than 30 languages. Their work allowed millions of people to use Smart Launcher in their own language, and we are incredibly grateful for everything they have done.

However, we feel it is time to change how we manage translations.

In recent months, we have noticed a growing number of quality issues in community contributions. Some were small mistakes or ambiguous translations, others were much more serious. We found strings containing additional text that was not present in the original version, translations that significantly changed the meaning of a message, and even cases where a single word was replaced with multiple lines of text, breaking the UI.

We cannot know the reason behind every incorrect contribution, but we suspect this may be related to the careless use of automated translation tools.

At the same time, Smart Launcher has grown a lot. Our projects contain much more text than they used to, and the cost and effort required to maintain them on Crowdin have increased as well.

Because of all this, we have been testing different solutions for some time, looking for a process that gives us more flexibility, allows us to maintain better quality and consistency, add new strings more easily, and support new languages faster.

We have now decided not to renew our Crowdin plan and to move to a different translation process. This means the Crowdin project will continue to exist but it will stop accepting new contributions in about 1 month.

The community will still be involved in translations, just in a different way than before. We are currently evaluating new tools and processes that will make it possible to report issues, suggest corrections, and share feedback more effectively.

We don't have more details to share yet, but as soon as we do, we'll let you know.

To everyone who has helped with translations over the years, and to everyone who will continue helping us in the future: thank you. Your contribution is an important part of Smart Launcher.

A dev's home screen

My home screen has always been quite standard.

The reason is simple, as a dev I often need to uninstall and reinstall our apps and test different configurations, so I can never settle for more than a few days with a specific setup.

However, this setup is quite special for me.

The launcher is Smart Launcher, the icons were generated with IPS, and the wallpaper is something I just created with Wallpaper Studio.

It's the first time I share a setup where each part of it has been designed by me and it feels good 😊

Wallpaper Studio, a new app from the Smart Launcher team

Hi everyone!

I’m Vincenzo Colucci, and I’m part of the team behind Smart Launcher.

Today we publicly released Wallpaper Studio, our first completely new app in almost ten years.

After working for so long on Smart Launcher and Icon Pack Studio, we wanted to explore another part of Android customization.

Wallpaper Studio is an interactive creative tool where you can start from a design, change its parameters in real time, experiment with shapes, colors, effects and animation, and create static or live wallpapers.

There is no AI involved in the artwork generation. Our goal was to put the creative process back into the user’s hands, while making artwork creation accessible even to people without design experience.

The final wallpaper is obviously important, but the creation process is what we focused on most. We wanted it to feel immediate, playful, and personal, while still offering enough control to create something truly your own.

The app also includes a community library where people can publish their creations and use artworks shared by others.

Wallpaper Studio is now available on Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.smartlauncher.wallpaperstudio

This is a particularly meaningful release for us, and we’d really appreciate your feedback, especially about the editor, performance, and the overall experience across different devices.

I’ll be around in the comments to answer any questions.

Wallpaper Studio: A interactive generative art tool for creating wallpapers

Hi everyone!

Today we publicly released Wallpaper Studio, an Android app built around interactive generative designs.

The idea is simple: instead of just choosing a finished wallpaper, users can explore a design in real time, change its parameters, experiment with colors, shapes, effects and animation, and turn the result into a static or live wallpaper.

The final result matters, but the creative process is the part we care about most. We wanted it to feel playful and accessible, while still giving people enough control to create something personal.

While working on the app, we followed this subreddit to learn more about generative art and find inspiration for new designs.

This is also where we discovered Gȧrt, an open-source generative art project by Igor Spasić. With Igor’s permission, we ported some of his designs and adapted them into interactive experiences inside Wallpaper Studio.

So this community has genuinely played a part in the project, and we’re very grateful for that.

Wallpaper Studio is now available on Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.smartlauncher.wallpaperstudio

I’d really appreciate any feedback from this community, especially about the creative experience and the kinds of generative systems you would like to see added in the future.

Introducing Wallpaper Studio: Open Beta FAQ

Hi everyone! We are incredibly excited to announce Wallpaper Studio today!

In case you missed the article, you can find it here: https://www.smartlauncher.net/blog/wallpaper-studio-is-here-create-animate-and-share-wallpapers-that-are-truly-yours

This post collects the most common questions about Wallpaper Studio.

We will keep updating it during the beta, based on your questions and feedback.

If something is unclear, ask in the comments and we will add the answer here.

First of all, thank you everyone for your patience. It's been almost 8 year since we launched a new app so this feel truly incredible.

Q: Why Wallpaper Studio?

A: Smart Launcher has always been about personalization.

With Icon Pack Studio, we learned that when multiple apps work together, they create new synergies and open the door to things that would not be possible with a single product.

Over the years, we also realized that wallpapers are one of the biggest parts of the home screen experience. But most wallpaper apps work in a very passive way: you browse, pick something, and apply it.

We felt something was missing. Something similar to what Icon Pack Studio did for icon packs: a way to let people create their own wallpapers, not just choose them.

Q: Why create a wallpaper app now, when AI can already create wallpapers for you?

A: That is exactly one of the reasons why we built Wallpaper Studio.

AI can generate the image you ask for, but we wanted to give people back the joy of creating something themselves. Wallpaper Studio makes the creative process accessible, so anyone can express their own style without needing design skills.

With AI, you usually get the picture you described. With Wallpaper Studio, you explore, tweak, experiment, and often discover something you did not even know you wanted. The result matters, but the fun is also in the process.

Q: Where is SL7? Wouldn’t it be better to focus our efforts on that?

A: Creating something new from time to time makes a lot of sense.

This year we expanded the team, especially the design team. We needed a new project to learn how to work together, get new inspiration, and bring fresh ideas into the Smart Launcher redesign.

Wallpaper Studio gave us that opportunity, just like Icon Pack Studio did years ago when we moved from Smart Launcher 3 to Smart Launcher 5.

Also, for a small team, doing different things is important. It gives us more stability, reduces risk, and helps us build knowledge that can improve all our products, including Smart Launcher.

Small update about local pricing in Smart Launcher

Hi everyone!

We recently updated the local prices of our Smart Launcher products.

A bit of context: our prices start from a USD reference price, and then we adapt them for each country based on local purchasing power. This helps us keep Smart Launcher accessible to as many people as possible around the world.

The problem is that, over time, exchange rates and local inflation can move prices away from what they were supposed to be. Most of the time, this meant that some local prices had become lower than intended. In a few cases, the opposite happened too, and some prices were higher than they should have been.

So we went through our products and realigned the local prices.

This means that some of you may now see different prices than before. In some countries the price may be higher, in others it may be lower.

To be clear, this is not us deciding to make Smart Launcher more expensive in specific countries. The goal is simply to bring local prices back in line with the adjusted price we originally intended for each market.

Also, if you already have an active subscription, this change should not affect the price of your current subscription. The updated prices apply only to new purchases.

We know pricing changes are never fun, especially when they result in a higher price. But if we leave this untouched for too long, local pricing can slowly become inconsistent across countries.

Anyway, if you notice a price that looks clearly wrong or inconsistent, please let us know. With many apps, offers and many countries involved, mistakes can happen, and we’ll be happy to check.

Thanks as always for supporting us!

Android 17 and Smart Launcher

Android 17 is here, and as always it is exciting to see a new Android version rolling out.

So far, we are not aware of any major issues affecting third-party launchers, except for two known problems that already have tickets on Google Issue Tracker:

  1. Widgets are broken for users with a work profile https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/488125748
  2. App bubbles are not working on third-party launchers https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/519241818

We expect the widget issue to be fixed soon with a patch from Google, since it looks like an unintended regression.

The app bubbles issue, instead, was expected. This is why starring the issue on Google Issue Tracker could be especially important: it helps Google understand how many users care about this feature, and it may help push the Android team to address it faster.

If you are affected by any of these issues, please consider starring the related ticket.

Also, if you find any other problem while using Smart Launcher on Android 17, please report it to us.

Thanks to everyone who reports issues, shares details, and helps us make Smart Launcher better!
