Almost got scammed while clubbing. Is this a common thing?

A bit of background : I was born and raised in India and moved out of the country after my graduation and travelled around the globe for 4 years before settling in Japan and have my PR there. My sister lives in Bengaluru so I came down to visit her a couple of weeks ago. My high school friend currently lives there and we caught up during that time. He’s a clubbing guy and would just get wasted there. Not a big fan but I tagged along with him to various clubs on a Saturday night.
And the idiot started blabbering about me being this “travelling nomad” and “Coolest Expat Dude” (🤢) to everyone he bumped into. Unnecessary stares and awkward smiles from all. Cue, enter these 3 girls and a guy, 2 were Nepali and the other two locals. They were being too friendly and chatting with me, asking way too many questions and a bit touchy as well. My friend and they started making plans for club hopping together.
I sensed something was off but didn’t want to spoil my friend’s excitement, I guess he was hoping to grab a girl’s attention. We switched clubs as per the new plan and went to the tab straight away.
4 of them queued before us, made the bar guy aware of us all being in a group and ordered pretty much two glasses each especially the expensive cocktails. 1 girl picked two glasses and pointed to somewhere in the crowd and said she’d be there. Then the next one did same, it was already loud and crowded and finding anyone would be impossible in there. Once the 3rd girl grabbed her drinks and went in the same direction, my alarms went off. They never paid for the drinks (no card tap or cash paid at the bar), and I guess the guy would have done the same and would have left us to pay the bill.
I grabbed my friend and rushed out before the guy could turn around. I have no idea what happened after that, luckily no one shared and details or socials. My friend was kinda pissed and annoyed I did that, but I stayed adamant that this was a scam. We moved to a nearby cozy bar and found a French friends group on vacation and my Slight knowledge of French came in handy, and we had a peaceful ending to the night.
I plan to visit my sister again (she’s expecting a baby) in the coming months and will be hanging out with the same idiot friend again. Is this thing pretty common in clubs in Bengaluru? I just want to have a good time without being on alert all the time.
